AMAIChevy Trucks 250cc U. S. Motocross Championship Round 6: Red Bud Track 'n' Trail my 1] §6 Own Race: 250cc David VuiUemin . 4th (7-3) Yamaha's Vuillemin picked up speed as the races went on, and his second moto was his first podium finish since switching to the YZ450F. "Like the first moto, I got my best lap on like the 11th lap," he said. "I was trying to catch Larry Ward because at the beginning of the race I kind of got a slow pace with some other guys, and I could not get my pace back at the end. But the second moto went pretty good. I had good speed right away, and I battled with Ezra for a little bit, and when I was third, I tried to pull away, and it worked out, so I'm pretty happy with my third place." 1] ® John Dowd 10th (12-8) §6@ 13th (15-15) The Cernic's KTM elder statesman got tangled up with Roncada in the first turn of the first moto, but he had better luck the second , time out. "The second moto wasn't too bad," Dowd said. "I made it through the first turn at least, and I rode a little better. I think I ended up eighth, so it was good. I was just kind of riding around by myself there for a while, and then toward the end I guess Fonseca fell over and got up kind of right in front of me and sparked me 'up a little bit there. It gave me a little bit of energy, and I was able to get by him, and I ended up eighth. Not bad. /'11 take it." Heath Voss Mach 1 Yamaha's 450 pilot returned for Red Bud, and his goal was simple. "I just wanted to get top 15 today," Voss said. "I think I'm capable of sixth, seventh, eighth and those positions, and that's what I'm working for. Hopefully I can get that in the next couple races." o Mike laRocco 5th (5-5) The Amsoil/Cbaparrai Honda star was hard on himself· after the race. "I suck at starts. I SUCK," LaRo'Cco said. "I don't know, I get good jumps. I just didn't motor through enough to get enough leverage in the first tum. In the first few turns, you get dictated by everybody so I kind of got pushed back. I just can't get a break I need. Those guys are fast and I have a decent pace, but it isn't enough to make up what the difference ends up being, so... I mean, I feel all right riding today, and 5-5 is as good as I've been doing all year, but I'm just kind of :bummed. I just want to get up there. I'm healthy. I feel good riding, I'm just not great at racing right now." 1] @ Larry Ward 6th (6-7) MotoXXX's current top racer had another solid day. "I felt good. I got two okay starts, and I just rode consistent," Ward said. "From the beginning to the end, I had pretty good speed. I got two sevenths, so considering what I'm racing against and what I'm riding, I'm pretty happy with that." 1] 1] Ezra Lusk 7th (4-10) Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Georgian had good speed all day. "The first moto went real good," Lusk said. "I worked my way up pretty good, and the second moto I was up there pretty close to Kevin [Windham] and them, and I was riding pretty good - just trying to stay consistent because I haven't really been riding a whole lot the last few months, and I knew my strength wouldn't be there. But I had a pretty bad crash in the back, and it kind of took it out of me, so I just tried to survive the rest of the moto at that point." §6{] Nick Wey 11th (9-11) Mach 1 Yamaha's Wey finished the first moto with no goggles, so he had a hard time seeing. "The first moto I felt pretty good, and there's a lot of mud out there so I kind of got my goggles all messed up, and I couldn't really see where l was going so well," he said. "I ended up getting ninth, which wasn't too bad. The second moto, I didn't get the start I needed. I made a couple passes, but I wasn't able to get the guys I needed to. I caught up to a few guys at the end of the race, but I just wasn't able to make a move. I think I'm right there, I just need to get a break and I need to get up front. I don't know if I'm -faster than them, but I think I can run with them if I get a good start. I just need to go home and regroup and come back strong next week. " 1] 0 Timmy Ferry 8th (8-6) Yamaha's Ferry had a bit of an off day for him. "There was kind of a pileup in the first tum [in the fiest moto], and I got stuck behind it really bad, and then the first lap I think Ryan Clark or someone stalled or fell or something, and I just ran into the back of him in a corner and fell," he said. "Then I went a couple laps and stalled it. By the time I got back up to eighth, I was pretty wore out, and I couldn't catch David [Vuillemin). The second moto I got a decent start, but, I don't know, I just didn't feel that good today, and sixth was the best I could do. I tried to hold Mike [LaRocco] off, but he was a little stronger than me in that second moto. I've got next week, I guess. so..." with a come-From-behind fifth-place were a level ahead of everyone today. "You know, those 450s are running finish. "It was tough; Chad and Kevin good out there. My 250 Honda was rode really, really good today, and we running great, but the 450s are run- all hard," ning really good, and it's making me Carmichael said. "It was hot, and we work. It's good. It's good for the Fans, 12 had JULY to work 16, 2003· really co Y co I .. n e vv s and it's good For the sport." Reed's fourth-place finish was good for third overall - his first podium since Hangtown. "This weekend was a much better weekend for me," Reed said. "I've just been struggling with the bike, and it's been Frustrating ... I think this is the best track on the circuit. If I could do LaRocco's Leap 100 times, that would be awesome. This track is a lot of fun, and I just want to thank all the sponsors who've stayed behind me. "I keep feeling better and better, so I'm kind of looking forward to Troy because it's more like supercross ...
