BRIEFLY•• • Jeremy McGrath was up in Mammoth Lakes on Vet weekend racing a Honda CRF450R provided by American Honda. The machine is a factory practice bike with works suspension. a factory motor and a very trick one-off magnesium carburetor. Barrett was able to wear Lash out to gain third and foUow Davis home in third. But the following Saturday was the day to be at Mammoth for those who like racing. Jeff Northrop grabbed the 125cc Pro main holeshot, with Grant Langston on the ground and the rest of the pack giving chase. "The previous two years, I was entered to race here, but I never got to race because I was injured just prior to this event," Langston said. "I wanted to come up and ride. It's been a lot of fun, but unfortunately I have been a little sick all week. Everything else has just been great." Langston dropped out of the 125cc race. Good, clean racing was showcased as Andrew Short chased down Northrop for the lead, and Derek Costella relentlessly led a 125cc freight train behind the leading two. Eric Sorby became his own worst enemy when he was fighting for position and washed out. 44 JULY 16, 2003· cue I "I don't know what happened with my front wheel - my tire - I don't know," said the delightful French" man. "The track was slippery in the corner every time. Tomorrow, I ride 250. The last time I get to ride 250s was three years ago in GP in Europe." Short grabbed the win, followed by Northrop and an extremely impressive Broc Hepler, who came through the pack for the last podium spot. In the last race of the week, Daryl Hurley charged his Suzuki to the top of the hill for the holeshot in the 250cc Pro main, followed closely by Bobby Kiniry and Jeremy Chaussee. Langston worked his way through the pack on his KTM 250 SX and eventually caught the fleeing New Zealander. Langston took the win, looking a level above his competition, and Sorby was black-flagged after falling and then re-joining the lead group a lap later. Hepler came through for another impressive ride, finishing second, and Kiniry caught up to third. eN e n eVIl's McGrath's teammate JeR Ward showed up for the Vet race on a Service Honda CR500AF (aluminum frame) with help from Pro Circuit. Mammoth is undergoing an environmental assessment right now. and once it is complete. it will be sent to Washington. D.C., to be read by the Forest Service Administrator to decide what to do next. The outcome can be one of two things: If the environmental assessment shows favorable results, the Mammoth Motocross track will then be reopened with a host running and maintaining the track - which means the track will be watered, maintained and groomed. The second is that the track will be closed. the dirt will be tilled, all indigenous piants will be replanted. and motorcycles will be banned. Mammoth Mountain's race director Mike Colbert stressed that to stay involved. you can check the website www.mammothmotocross.com. The forest service press release is there. and the email address for comment to the forest service is also available. "We are doing all that we can to keep the track going, - Colbert said. Grant Langston wasn't feeling too well the week of the Mammoth Motocross. "1 ended up throwing up after the second 500cc moto [which he wonl." Langston said. "That's one of the reasons why I backed off in both races - fortunateiy. the second race had a gap so I could do it. " Langston apparently isn't a fan of having this much time oR during the AMA racing season. "I hate kind of having two weekends off." he said. "I think one weekend off would have been good. They should have one weekend off after Vegas before Glen Helen and just have one weekend off now." Eric Sorby agrees. -I don'l really like when I have long break: I like to race every weekend." Sorby said. "Sometimes when you have a week off. ifs not so bad because ifs very hard to ride all season - supercross series. nationals. I really like here: I like this country. I like everything in this country: I really love to live here." Tom Morgan of Tom Morgan Racing had some tips to getting your bike to run well in the altitude - especially a 125. -For tuning for altitude. I change the fuel more then I change anything." he said. "Most of what we run up here is the same spec as what we run at Ponca City and Loretta Lynn's. Ifs all in the fuel. If you can run the oxygenated fuel, there's very little jetting problems.. 134cc strokers that we built for Loretta's are by far the best. I mean they're four to five more horsepower than just a 125cc mod motor.•
