BRIEFLY: The AMA's Roger Ansel announced the U.S. Trials de Nations Team during the awards cer· emony in Rhode Island. The 2003 men's team will consist of Geoff Aaron (GG), Travis Fox (She), Andy Johnson (Bell and Chris Florin (Mon), while the ladies' team is made up of Pam deBruin (Mon), Andrea Davis (She) and Nicole Bradford (GG). This year's TdN will be held in Itaiy on September 27-28, (Above) Aaron Young might not have won in Rhode Island, but he did extend his series points lead with a pair of second-place finishes. On Sunday, Aaron looked more in control of things. Other than a five in section 10 when he spun the rear wheel before a critical step, the Connecticut native racked up 13 cleans and a one on his first lap - the one coming in the most difficult section of the day, which featured a difficult undercut step. Only two riders got through this section on the first lap Craig with a three and Aaron with the one. Aaron's body language was that . of someone intent on winning the event, and his six-point first lap put him easily in the lead with a fourpoint margin over Florin. On the other hand, Bell was having a lackluster loop and topped it off by fiving the final section, one of the easiest. "That [five on the easiest section] just brought back memories of yesterday, and yesterday was absolutely terrible for me," Bell said. Bell got into more of a rhythm on the final two laps, turning in duplicate four-point cards, which included a hair-raising ride on a very tall rock wall at section four. "I entered the section, turned the first corner and realized I had a flat rear tire," Bell said. 'There was nothing I could do; I was already in the section, so I just rode out the first part. When I got to the last part - a third gear, flat-out double step - I just hung on. It was just like, 'Okay, here we gO."1 Bell amazingly rode it out for a one. Aaron returned on lap two with another six point lap, a five and a one, as before, giving him a five-point lead over Bell going into the final lap. However, on lap three, the wheels fell off of the Aaron Express. "On the last loop things were slicked up pretty good, and I just had some funny things happen to me," Aaron said. "I went to take off in one section and spun and had to take an alternate line. That put me late on time, so I ended up botching the final step, and I ended up crashing pretty hard. Then I ended up flving the next section, because the bike was all mangled up and I had a flat tire. So, I kind of blew it on the last lap - today was just too easy to come back from mistakes." Last-lap fives more than doubled Aaron's first and second laps, relegating him to a second-place finish behind Bell. Saturday C'SHIP: 1. Wilson Craig (17); 2. Geoff Aaron (21); 3.
