Motoworldracing.com rookie Bobby Kiniry rounded out the top 10. eN Red Bud Track 'n' Trail Buchanan, Michigan Results: July 6, 2003 [Round 6 of 12l er. Jesseman, meanwhile, crashed on a hill and lost a few spots. Later in the moto he would collect a flat rear tire for his efforts and begin dropping positions rapidly. He would finish 17th. Smith took advantage of Jesseman's error to take fourth, and he never stopped charging, nearly catching Tedesco at the end of the moto. When they crossed the finish, Stewart had a monster lead of more than 30 seconds, with Sellards and Tedesco behind him. Smith was fourth, Metcalfe fifth, and Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Eric Sorby was sixth. Behind them, the battle among the title contenders continued. Brown crashed near the same spot that Jesseman had, allowing Hughes to get away and Langston to get within sight of him. "It was really hard to pass out there," Langston said. "On the first lap I came around, and all the pit boards were saying P-30 and things like that, so I knew I was outside the top 30. The track was kind of onelined. I don't want to complain, but they put all this junk in the corners, like leaves and stuff, and it made it too deep. It was just one deep rut all the way around." Langston got within sight of Brown with two laps to go, but he couldn't quite close the gap. Then Brown made a pass on Hurley late in the race to get a rider in between him and Langston. Hughes ended up seventh, with Brown eighth, Hurley ninth and Langston 1Oth. Smith nailed a huge holeshot in the second moto. "I have a good routine that I go through," Smith said of his amazing starting prowess. "Being Grant Langston (1111 went 10·2 on the day, but that was good enough to gain him six points on Mike Brown in the National Championship. He's now just nine points back. art's green bike near the front of the pack. At least at first. Before the end of the first lap, he had moved into seventh. A lap later he was behind Langston and Smith in third, and soon he was past both of them and pulling away again. "I missed a gear at the start and had to move up," Stewart said. Brown also had a bad start, but he was unable to move up as quickly as Bubba. Seven laps into the race, he had clawed to ninth and was on the rear wheel of Hughes. But Hughes again stepped it up, not allowing Brown to get within striking distance. The two rivals would chase each other hard the rest of the way, slowly picking off other riders who appeared to be tiring under the heat and humidity. With Stewart completely checked out up front, the battle for second was on between Langston and Smith. "Kelly was running a good pace," Langston said. "I caught him and put the pressure on, but he actually seemed to get faster. Once I got around him, I was tired. I've been sick lately, and I felt really weak." "I know Grant pretty well. We used to be teammates," Smith said. "Actually, we joke around that we tangle up with each other too much. It was definitely pressure there, but I like that. It keeps me honest." After three laps of intense pressure, Langston made the pass on the on the four-stroke helps, of course. I can start in second gear and keep both feet down longer. It's just a lot of 10th lap and wrapped up second. Well behind them, Sellards was cruising in fourth until Jesseman caught him. They sprinted toward the finish, little things that add up." AmsoiljChapparal Honda's Chris Gosselaar started second, with Hughes right behind. Langston had a much only to be caught by Hughes and Brown. The final lap became an intense four-man dash for the fourth spot, but Sellards held strong for the better start this time, while Stewart did not. There was no sign of Stew- spot, just ahead of Jesseman, Hughes and Brown. Metcalfe, Gosselaar and 125 MOTO 1: 1. James Stewart (Kaw): 2. Brock Sellards (Yam); 3. Ivan Tedesco (Yam): 4. Strong starts helped his cause, but he was not as happy with his finishes. "I got tired out there; I don't know why," said the Red Bull KTM rider. "Maybe I charged too hard early in the second moto. I rode really hard early." 15th The Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider rode well in the first moto, coming from a sub-top-l0 start to a sixth-place finish. He suffered a terrible start in the second moto, however, and then a crash ripped off his clutch lever, resulting in a DNF. ® Mikestarts, two bad rides," said 7th Pro Circuit Brown "Two bad Brown's Kawasaki boss Mitch Payton. Brown was not available for comment after the race, but it appears the championship chase, as well as his bitter rivalry with Ryan Hughes, may be taking a toll on the Tennessee rider. "He should be disappointed," Payton said. ®1] Josh Woods §~ Ivan Tedesco 20th The Red Bull KTM rider was back on the tour after missing several months of action with broken heels. "KTM didn't put any pressure on me," Woods said. "This is my home track, but I just wanted to get a ride in. I felt pretty good." Woods tumed a top-10 start into a 16th-place finish in moto two. 9th Tedesco's strong third· place ride in the first moto was followed up by another three-spot, as in three big crashes in moto two. Running well out of the top 20, he called it a day after that, resulting in 3-38 scores on the day. cue I e n e _ S • JULY 16. 2003 15
