Off the restart, it again was Jacobsen and Pugh, with Kenneth Lamberti moving into third, in front of Avery and Chris MacCarty. The two 65cc classes had the same riders in the first six spots, with the first three swapping places back and forth. In the DTX, Tyler Kidwell took the lead from Cassidy Heiser, Kyle Schlimme, Bailey Spence and Trey Kreiser. Heiser pressured Kidwell in the early laps, as the front trio pulled away from the rest. In the late laps, Kidwell put a few bikelengths on the Heiser-Schlimme battle for second. The Modified version had Heiser, Schlimme, Kidwell and Spence in front. Kidwell took second at the end of the opening lap, but Schlimme retook it in the second tum on lap three. On the fifth lap, Schlimme got under Heiser in turns one and two and held on to it to the end. While he lost the 85cc DTX final, Greenland came back to claim wins in the 85cc Modified (12-15) and 125cc Modified classes. In the 85cc event, he followed Toby Stay, with Megan James and Shayna Texter following him. After following for a few laps, Greenland went by on the outside in the second turn on lap four. In the 125cc finai, Greenland started fourth, behind Mike Radiey, Matthew Young and Brad Phillips. He was second by the end of the opening lap, and he took the lead off four on the second lap. After a slow start, Brandon Robinson moved up to challenge Young for third in the middle of the race. Robinson inherited it on the final lap when Young dropped out. Dalton Worthington recovered from a slow start in the 50cc Oil-Injected class to take second from Logan Ehrets on the second lap, and Worthington finally got by leader Kenneth Venarchick on the fourth lap. Venarchick came back to win the 50cc Junior (4-6) division, while former National champ Bailey Spence topped the 50cc Senior (7 -8) group. After causing the red flag in the 500cc Pro final, Rick Winsett won the 250cc A final after a hard-fought battle with race-long leader Chris Klinefelter, wresting the lead away as they started the final lap. He also easily won the Sportsman final. Roy Miller used the event to get some more seat time on his 1000cc Suzuki to win the 750cc class eaSily, ahead of Sammy Sabedra and Joey Tyeryar. In the Senior A class, Kawasaki rider Danny Morrison jumped off the line when the hat dropped and assumed the lead until he found a wheel-sucking rut that slowed him down long enough for Cycle Connection rider Darryl Campbell to get by. Much like the previous races, the two riders were tight, within sight of each other coming into the scoring tent. On the second lap, Yamaha rider Don Hall caught up to the two leaders. The three riders freight-trained through the third lap. During the fourth lap, Morrison fell victim again to a funky rut, and Hall took a better line to grab second. At the finish, it was Campbell in first, Hall in second and Morrison in third. Landshark Hare Scrambles Pulaski, Virginia Results: June 8. 2003 (Round 6) 0111.: Stephen Edmondson (KTM). AA; l. Motorcycles Costa Rica/Mark IV Yamaha rider Chuck Hancock was first off the line in the 250cc A class, but he was passed by Triad Powersports-backed Suzuki rider Dean Ingram shortly after. Ingram and Hancock got tangied up in Shark Creek. Honda rider Taylor Faddis and Yamaha rider Tommy Tomlinson passed the fallen riders. Faddis was soon out of the hunt with bike trouble. Ingram got his bike up and battled with Tomlinson, but he got the wind knocked out of him. Hancock passed Ingram to track down Tomlinson. He caught up to Tomlinson. gave a yell and took over the lead for the rest of the race for the win. Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series Round 6: Landshark Hare Scrambles Ponca City Qualifier Wildwood Motocross Park Edmondson Hooks the Landshark Win Kennedy Turns Orange, Still Undefeated Bv HEATHER GREER PULASKI, VA, JUNE 8 Making one's way up the long, winding, uphill dirt road to the parking area of the Landshark, one can look over the edge and get an idea of how technical this track can be. After a week's worth of torrential downpours. even finding a parking space was a challenge. Stepping in ankle-deep mud as they got their bikes off of their trailers, riders knew that this year's Land· shark was going to rival Pipsico as one the muddiest and nastiest races of the year. The technical 7 -mile trail was packed with deep ruts, slippery rocks and slimy roots. An added challenge was a hundred-yard section in which riders ran down a slate-bottomed creek swollen with run-off from the previous week's rains. Casey Cycle City/Chick-fil-A/MSR-sponsored Yamaha rider George Greer grabbed the holeshot, but he was passed shortly thereafter on a motocross-style straight section by Jimmy's Cycle Sales/Scott-backed KTM rider Stephen Edmondson. However, Edmondson unnecessarily pulled into the scoring tent, and Greer took the lead back. Further into the lap, Greer moved to the side and Edmondson moved back into the lead. Maxima-backed Jason Greer passed his brother to take over the second position and to chase aher Edmondson. Though Edmondson stayed out of sight of Greer, he heard him on the motocross section during the fourth lap. Edmondson turned up the throttle and came through the scoring tent with the overall. Greer came in 35 seconds later for second. During the last laps of the race, the battle for third heated up between Motorcycles [, More/Mid-Atlantic Heating/No Toil-sponsored Yamaha rider Chance Baker and Motor Imports/Answer-backed Kawasaki rider Daniel Morrison. Baker was right on Morrison's rear fender lor the first three laps. Morrison stopped for fresh goggles and gloves, and Baker slipped by. The two riders battled back and forth. At one point, Morrison was in front, and Baker sailed by him by jumping' over a log. Right at the finish, Baker took a slower line through a mudhole, and Morrison was able to pass him and retake third place. Baker came in right on his rear knobbies for fourth. In the 200cc A class, Wotks Enduro/Go Race Suspension-backed KTM rider Tim Bongard grabbed the holeshot, but he was out of the race by the first lap due to bike trouble. Motorworx-backed KTM rider Jason Hedrick and FMF/Factory gOg/Brewer Cycles' KTM rider Robby Norwood passed each other back and forth for the lead throughout the race. On the last lap, Norwood laid his bike out in a ditch, while Hedrick found a decent line around him to take the lead and the win. Bv Rov JENKINS KENTWOOD, LA, JUNE 8 Those who like old -school motocross tracks with long straightaways and rolling, steep hills that extend more than a mile into the woods would love Wildwood. After a powerful downpour during the week and a few sprinkles dur· ing Saturday's practice, owner Lynn Lejuene got the red clay smoothed and moistened in time for the big race weekend. Riders from four states dug their knobbies into the red dirt. seeking to nail down qualifying positions for the Ponca City NMA Grand National Championship in August. More than 200 riders arrived under clear skies, with temperatures in the 70s, but heat became a factor about halfway through the first moto, as the mercury passed gO. Locai rider Blake Kennedy from Covington, Louisiana, kept his undefeated streak going with his seventh consecutive mota vic· tory since joining the KTM team with Champion Cycle Center. In the last three years, "Sky Pilot" has moved from green to blue to orange. He struck early by winning the first moto of the day in the 125cc Money class, over his local nemesis, Coy Hobgood, who fin- cue I e ished second. Chad McNemar finished third. in front of Adam Hancock. Kennedy didn't make it to the starting gate for the second moto. Hobgood finished first. in front of Hancock, Martin Campbell and McNe· mar. Kennedy planned to contest the National at Budds Creek the following weekend; Hobgood planned to ride a few National outdoor races this season as well. in the 250cc money class, Kennedy withstood the challenge of KTM 450-mounted Hobgood, who puiled right up behind him on the second lap. This seemed to light Kennedy's fire, and he pulled away for good, finishing with a large lead. Former Pro rider Wendell Simmons' Suzuki started seizing during practice, so he jumped on a Honda YZ450F and pulled the holeshot. The "Old Gunslinger from Kentwood" could oniy hold the lead for one lap before settling into third while getting used to the new bike. They finished the first moto that way, with Hancock, McNemar and Jerry Burton finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. In the second moto, Hobgood crashed out in the first turn. The 125cc Novice class had some fast teenagers. Colby Kreft from Magnolia, Texas, and Cody Waggoner from Covington, ne""s JULY 9, 2003 73
