Golden Anniversary Lodi Cycle Bowl L()[)I TUl2 STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN GOULD LODI, CA, J(]NE 14 ... bout 12 guys, including one ~ highway patrolman, started the Lodi Motorcycle Club. It was chartered by the AMA in 1937 and organized Pro races at the Lodi Stadium on Friday nights. One of those 12 guys lived close to Morse Road and was aware of a piece of property for sale. Upon his urging, others from the club looked over the property, and it was determined that they wanted to purchase that property. A couple from the club, Don and Buela Stover, approached the owner of the grounds. After selling the original location of the club, the Lodi Motorcycle Club bought the property on Morse Road from the Stovers for approximately $2500. The deed was filed in 1954, and the Lodi Motorcycle Club held its first season of races during that year. off, using gravitational force to water the track. The original track was much larger than today's track, and the original track lights were windmill towers with lights on top of them. Racing fees and spectator fees were all $ 1. At that time, regular riders at this track included Jim Rice, Johnny McGill, Roger McCarthy and Ray Huff. The AMA and District 36 rules back then didn't allow anyone under 15 1/2 years old to ride. There were no Pee Wee classes; the smallest bikes on the track were 200s. A lot has changed since then. This weekend's biggest winner is 16 years old and has been riding since he was much younger. Coming up through the classes, Mallott's Yamaha/Wiseco/Union 76/RJI/Mother's Polishes-sponsored Nick Moore finished first in the Pro Am and Open A classes during the Saturday night n, and then he came back on Sun- (Above) Nick Moore takes the win in the Open A and Pro Am TT events at the Lodi 50th Anniversary celebration. Fifteen riders lined up for the Open A event. Key got off the line on the pole, followed by Moore and Tony Souza Jr. Key secured the first spot and rode to the finish first. Most of these women were not only enthusiasts, but they themselves rode motorcycles. During racing days at the track, the Comet Club ran the concessions while the men tended to the track. The property was given the name of the Lodi Cycle Bowl, because it had the appearance of a bowl in the ground and it was often referred to as the "Lodi Dust Bowl." The property was a burrow pit, the dirt being dug out to use as fill for the expansion of Highway 99 to four lanes. Lodi Club members made a water wagon out of a Model A Ford truck frame with a flatbed. The water tank was a bladder from an aircraft fuel tank, with a pipe sticking out with holes drilled in it. One of the club members' sons sat on the back of the wagon and turned the spigot on and 66 JULY 9,2003' cue I e day to win the Pro Am again and finish fifth in the Open A event.
