Jake Johnson, Geo Roeder, Chris Carr and Joe Kopp. Normally, with 53 entries there would have been five riders eliminated, but due to the late hour, everyone moved on to the heats. Geo Roeder II and Rich King gave the enthusiastic crowd a preview of the National when they locked up in the first heat. Roeder came away with the win. Paul Lynch battled early on with his Moroney's Harley-Davidson teammate Jake Johnson until Johnson dropped out. Lynch cruised on into the main. Chris Carr easily took the second heat with the fastest time of the night. Armbruster Racing/Lombardi Harley-Davidson/Schott Harley-Davidson's Chris Hart was a solid second over J.R. Schnabel. The third heat saw Joe Kopp and Johnny Murphree out front as Bryan Smith, Willie McCoy and Kevin Atherton battled over the last transfer. The race was red-flagged at the halfway mark when Atherton fell in turn three. The restart saw Kopp repeating his start, this time with Smith, McCoy and Murphree running in that order. Murphree was able to get by Smith at the end as McCoy took his Dallas Harley-Davidson/RedJine-backed Harley to second. Jay Springsteen ran away with the last heat over Lancaster Harley-Davidson/Saddlemen/Dodge Brothers-backed Steve Beattie. Aaron Creamer held last year's winner, Chris Evans, at bay for the last transfer. Dominic Beaulac easily took the first semi ahead of National Cycle's Kevin Atherton. As a light sprinkle began to fall, Kenny Coolbeth ran away with the second semi. Cayuga Tool/Sunoco backed Shawn Clark took second. KK Supply/American Honda's Bryan Smith broke on top of the last semi wjth Chris Evans and Shaun Russell in tow. Custom Chrome/Revtech's Gary Rogers blasted to the front and took the lead. Smith lost his seat in turn two but continued on and eventually re-passed Rogers for the win. Evans was once again one position shy of defending his race title. cue I e n e vv s JULY 9, 2003 29
