Saturday's Intermediate winner was Michael McConaughy, who had 39 dabs and 14 cleans to Ray Pranskunas' 40 dabs and 14 cleans. Pranskunas won Sunday's event. while his daughter Sara won Sunday's Novice class with (get this!) a score of only eight dabs and a whopping I 1 cleans· and in the rain, no less! Don't let the flowers taped to her handlebars fool you; she is learning to ride with the boys! Novice·c1ass sections can make the most experienced motorcycle riders crash when they try trials the first few times. Sara may have to move up to Intermediate soon if she keeps this up. Bv CRAIG GERNHARDT WAUZEKA, WI, JUNE 7-8 Shereo-mounted trials pilot Noel Smage earned these two wins. and the 40 championship points that came with them. Wauzeka trials masters Mark and Patrick Doll. Jim Altimus and Homer Weber used the Doll Dairy Farms pastures and hillsides to created 32 different sections, with the riders riding two loops. There was no bottlenecking. and only once were three classes at one section. waiting to ride. Kim Doll was in charge of signup; keeping the riders supplied with clean. dry cards for every loop's scoring: the scoring itself; and the wonderful turkey dinner on Saturday night. Jessie and Lois Holenbeck provided the music and individual video recordings of the riders and awards. What does one do when traction doesn't exist? One must muscle the bike over such terrain. These steep, 60-plus-foot. muddy, mossy. boulder-laced hillclimbs needed dabbing, pushing and peddling to earn a three! Muddy, slick hills are the great equalizers. Don't five a section. because they bunch up and ruin a card. Just ask AI's Junkyard·sponsored Paul Philbrick, who had the best line of the weekend. "Don't show me your poor card. buddy," Philbrick said. "\ got one of my own!" His 105 dabs proved that! Philbrick's weekend looked promising, as he started the Saturday event with perfect rides on the event's first two sections. However. by the time Philbrick reached sections 24 and 25 called "The Wall of Death" - he had felt the wrath of Wauzeka. On Saturday, Rock River Powersport/Ryan Young Products-backed Smage topped fellow Elkhorn. Wisconsin. rider Jeff Lois, who is also sponsored by Rockriver Powersports, as well as Torque Center and Club 95. Smage had 69 dabs and seven cleans: Lois had 77 dabs and six cleans. On Sunday, Smage topped Sherco-mounted Illinois rider Alex Wiles. Smage lowered his score on Sunday to 47 dabs and 10 cleans, despite the 12-hour downpour of rain before and during the event. It wasn't until midway though the second loop that the rain went away and the mosquitoes came out and started sapping blood and energy from all riders. not to mention the swarms that got in the riders' eyes. On the Expert line (as if the difference in class lines mattered on this weekend), Jeff Knaack had help from his alter ego, • Johnny," to take wins on both days. "Johnny" liked the way Knaack rode on Saturday and Sunday but wished more people would compete against Knaack. This was the smallest number of Expert riders on hand in recent memory. Sat· urday's second-place finisher, Scott Loveless, skipped Sunday's event to watch his son Zack race motocross, and Beta-mounted Ed Polheber was the runner·up to Knaack. starting up a new finishing streak after breaking his last one at Byron the week before. The Advanced class had two different winners. Saturday's winner, Tyler Malin, moved up from the Intermediates and earned a win on his first try. Malin had 62 dabs and three cleans. On Sunday, Tom Gillespie won on a tied 97 score and one clean, with the win hav· ing to be decided by one's scoring. Wauzeka Trials: Sara Pranskunas and her dad, Ray, were both winners in Wauzeka, Wisconsin, site of rounds four and five of Wisconsin Observed Trials Association action. On Sunday, Sara topped the Novices while Ray topped the Intermediates. ,------------------,w ~ Bv STEVE AND PEGGV COR LEE TALLASSEE, AL. JUNE 7-8 Monster Mountain played host this month to its biggest event yet - the Southeastern Regional Loretta Lynn's Qualifier. Riders from 19 states were on hand to decide who would attend the prestigious event in August. and the racing action was nonstop all day. Torrential rains delayed the start of Saturday's program for several hours, but within an hour of the sun's appearance, near noon, the track was in perfect condition_ Greg Cole had his Southem Dirt Crew on hand to handle track preparations. and Banger's Race Announcing kept the crowd well·informed all day. The popular Pro Sport division was filled with heavy hitters. The signup sheet read like the who's who of Amateur racing. Davi Millsaps, Brian Gray. Donnie McGourty, Jim Neese and a host of other top-notch talent lined up for what would prove to be some of the best action of the day. In the I 25cc class. Millsaps was the man. Gray grabbed the start of moto one and held Millsaps off for the win, but Millsaps easily won the second and third races. In the 250cc class, Gray easily swept all three motos, ahead of a hard-charging Neese. After a bad first mota, Neese ran a strong second in motos two and three. Firstmoto runner-up Jordan Peeples had problems later in the day and was not a factor in the overall outcome. In the A classes, sweeps were the order of the day. Millsaps took all three 125cc races. leading every mota from wire to wire. Florida's Donnie McGourty was runner-up in each stanza, and South Carolina's Danny Smith filled out the podium each time. The 250cc A class saw Team Green's Bryan Johnson take all three motos in style. Florida's Peeples was runner-up in the first two heats, but late· afternoon problems knocked him out of the running in this class as well. Second went to another Floridian, Jesse Ballard, via 3-3-2 finishes. The B division belonged to Team Green's Kyle Chisholm, totally. The Florida youngster led every lap of every moto in the 125cc Stock and Modified classes, as well as both 250cc classes. Florida's Shaun Skinner put in great rides as well, placing second in three of the four classes. Team Green's Matt Boni took runner-up in the 125cc B Stock class. The C classes belonged to no one rider in particular. as inconsistency kept the leader· board in question throughout the day. Flori· da's Nick Depalo was by far the strongest rider in the 125cc classes, winning a total of three motos in two classes. but a pileup at the start of the last Modified race put him out for the day. South Carolina's Stephen Cooke took the 125cc Modified win via 5-6-3 finishes. Depalo took the Stock win with 4·1 ·1 finishes. The 250cc C win went to South Carolina's Casey Shaw, who rode strong all day, losing only one moto to Georgia's Michael Davidson. There were five different classes in the Vet division, and the racing was top· notch in each. Tennessee's Kevin Walker was the one to watch. Walker gained the lead within the first lap in both the Over 25 and Over 30 races each time out and never looked back, Florida's Vince DeVane, a regional star from years ago, returned to racing this year and rode strong all day. Devane finished runner-up to Walker in the Over 30 class and rounded out cue e a: o u >- '" '>-" W Q. '" 5 :x: Q. Monster Mountain Motocross Park: Florida hotshoe Zack Lundy (111) bested 42 tough competitors to take the FourStroke win at the Loretta Lynn's Southeast Amateur Regional Qualifier in Tallassee, Alabama. the podium in the Over 25 class, behind Walker and yet another Floridian, Anthony Pocarobba. North Carolina's Jim Chester took third in the Over 25 class via 3-5-3 finishes. The Over 35-c1ass win went to Florida's Scott Fredricksen, ahead of former GP star Billy Liles. Fredricksen had a bad first moto but came back to win races two and three convincingly. First-mota winner Darryl Heisler suffered in the last mota and could only manage fifth overall. Heisler came back to top the Over 40 class via 2-2-6 finishes and in the process became the only rider to get the holeshot in every moto he contested all day, Georgia's Ross Johnston won the first two races in the Over 40 class, but a pileup in the last moto kept him froni the class win. Tim Eggers, another Floridian, rounded out the podium. In the Over 45 class, local ace Johnny Borders took his KTM to a three·moto sweep, besting Washington State's Chet Malito. Rounding out the podium was Georgia's Kevin Brule. The Four-Stroke class saw 43 riders line up for the first race. Florida's Zack Lundy took the overall win after suffering bad breaks all day long in his B·c1ass races. Lundy won the first and last motos in convincing fashion, headed only by Peeples in moto two. Peeples took runner-up, and Alabama's Drew Askew rounded out the podium. Monster Mountain Motocross Park Tallassee. Alabama Results: .June 7-8. 2003 125 A PRO SPT: 1. David Mlitseps (SuI): 2.
