Wenck continued to ride smoothly, and he held on for the win, followed by Nelson in second, Gibson in third and Mericle in fourth. Simonton rounded out the top five. After getting holeshots in the first motos of the 250cc A and Over 25 A classes, Mericle pulled another one at the start of the first 125cc A moto. Corey Holman followed in second but was quickly passed by the hardcharging Gibson. Wenck was in fourth on the first lap before going down; he recovered quickly but found himself at the back of the pack. At the end of lap one, it was Mericle with a big lead over Gibson and Tony Esch, who had moved into third. At the finish line, it was Mericle with the win, in front of Gibson. Nelson worked his way into third place, followed closely by Randy Hanson in fourth and Nick Nenow in fifth. After dominating the first 250cc A moto. Wenck only managed to get seventh in the first 125cc A moto. He went down twice after hitting lires that were being used as track bar· fiers. The tires got flipped out onto the track after other riders had hit them. "I crashed twice," Wenck said. "I kept hitting these tires that got kicked out. .. you know, everybody had to race the same track. and I just got beat out there." Gibson grabbed the early lead in the second moto, followed by Wenck and Mericle. Mericle was one of the few 125cc riders clearing the uphill triple. On the penultimate lap, Mericle passed Wenck for second going up the hill. Gibson held on for the mota and overall win. Mericle followed in second.
