In the first Senior A moto at PMI Pueblo Motorsports Park, KTM rider Jeffrey Summers grabbed the holeshot. with Shawn Smith and Gene Gunther, both on Yamahas, following. Summers pulled Smith for three laps until right after the finish-line jump down in the S corners, where Smith made his move to pass, bumping bars with Summers. However, Summers pulled it out on the small tabletop and led for the remainder of lap four. Going into the fifth lap, Smith made another attempt to pass, going for the inside this time, and he was successful. At the same corner on the next lap, Summers tried to take it back but spun out a little bit, allowing Smith to increase his lead. Smith had no chance to let off, as Summers stayed in hot pursuit right up to the checkered nag. Gunther followed in third. The second moto was eagerly anticipated by the crowd and, true to form, Summers and Smith jumped off the line in a battle for the lead. As the two disappeared around the back comer, the crowd strained to see who would pop up over the top of Devil's Tower in first place. Smith was out front this time, with Summers on his tail. Coming up out of the horseshoe, only a little less than halfway through the first lap, Summers poured on the gas for the hard left tum and spun out on the berm and went down, much to the disappointment of the spectators. Smith sailed on to a huge lead, and Gunther moved into second place. For the remainder of the race, it was Smith, Gunther and Summers, without challenge. Overall, Smith took first, Summers took second, and Gunther took third. In the 85cc Advanced (12-13) class, Yamaha rider Justin Decker and Honda rider Charlie Rupprecht pushed each other into making critical mistakes. In the first moto, Decker got the holeshot, but Rupprecht took over on the second lap. Suzuki riders Matt Nicely and Klint Earie followed. Rupprecht and Decker were side by side going up the hill when Rupprecht stuttered slightly and gave Decker the chance to pass, to no avail. Decker turned on the gas on the next lap to push Rupprecht, but he went down, and Nicely took second. Decker remounted in third but took back second, passing Nicely on the next lap. In moto two, Decker again took the holeshot, followed by Rupprecht and Nicely. This time, Decker immediately put some distance between himself and the pack. Rupprecht, meanwhile. pushed hard to catch up, but he ended up going down on the back-side sweeper, again allowing Nicely to take second and letting Decker run away with first place. Rupprecht remounted and charged after Nicelyon the last lap but twisted on the tabletop and slid out, crashing yet again. Overall, Decker was first, with Rupprecht second and Nicely third. Virginia International Raceway Morgan, Larsen Top WERA Cycle Jam By DAN SCHMITT ALTON, VA, MAY 24 Twice a year, all of the riders of all regions have an opportunity to meet and race against each other - at the Grand National Finale at Road Atlanta at the end of the year, and at the WERA Cycle Jam. This midseason race pays points for all regions. Most of the contingency supporters for motorcycle road racing - Yamaha. Kawasaki, Suzuki, etc. - are committed to pay at this event. Riders who want to qualify for the Suzuki Cup Finals at Road Atlanta in October can use this race, and they can also check out their potential competitors. The rain held off for most of the day. There was one brief sprinkle at the end of the Open Superstock race that caused some of the front-runners to go down in tum 17, and this sprinkle also precipitated some hard decisions for the Novices racing in the next race, but for the rest of the races, the track was dry and fast. Two Novice riders won three final events. Bo Morgan Jr. won D Superbike, Formula Two and Lightweight Twins on his RGM RacingjBadcock Furniture of Canton SV Suzuki. Chad M. Larsen rode his Speed Werks! NESBA.com!EBC!Dunlop Suzuki GSX-R600 to victory in B Superstock, C Superbike and C Superstock. Josh Hayes used his Attack Racing!Dun10p(Teknic Suzuki GSX-R750 to claim Suzuki contingency money and qualify for the Suzuki Cup Final in both the A Superstock and 8 Superstock races. C. Brian Kcraget won the 125cc GP race on his NESBA.com! Phil Dodd Tuning Honda 125 and then won the Formula Two final with his 250cc Yamaha. With hundreds of riders and thousands of racing miles, the WERA Cycle Jam three-day weekend turned out to be both exciting and safe. Only a few riders were injured in the low number of crashes, and the ambulance onJy moved a few times, Virginia International Raceway provided both a great facility and a challenging racetrack for all.
