Miller Lights Up the Silver Cup Opener Western New Yortl Motocross Association, Inc. Round 7: Palmyn Racing Association By RANDY HElM Hoppy Hops to Top of Palmyra Podium both Mxride, com trucks with those Toys For those Tots! By lARRY WOOSlEl PALMYRA, NY, MAY 25 _ • WNYMA's seventh round was Gary Johnston's RV Center and ~upport- Plus Racing/Michelin Tire Day, and the Expert class broke the piggybank over Hogback Hill and collected an extra $1000 in cash, thanks to the Palmyra Racing Association and Gary Johnston's RV Center. Loads of other prizes were awarded back several places, including a random drawing for a power washer. This season, all riders at Palmyra Racing Association's WNYMA races are automatically entered in an end-of-year, random drawing for a 2003 Honda CR250. On the final motocross race at Palmyra on September 14, a winner wiIJ be drawn during intermission. . One of the greatest WNYMA "action" classes is the Senior C class, and this day was no exception, with 23 Over 30 Beginners and Novices "livin' MXtra-Iarge." KTM riders Mike Murphy and Mark Hoppy roosted the class through the holeshot comer and big chicane_ Hoppy started stepping out over the back sections of the track, and he cleared the reinstated Gravity Cavity and the Big Six Pack with a. commanding lead. Meanwhile, the rest of the full deck of Senior C riders got reshufned. "Gentleman Fred" Lucas had worked his way up to the sixth spot, but the big newsflash was that Fred's son Keith Lucas was now in control of second place. No doubt Pro Action Suspension of WNY owner "2Cool" Bart Lucas (Fred's brother and Keith's uncle) had the Lucas boys' Yamaha and Kawasaki ready to rumble. Hoppy was hooked up, and he took the win, with Keith, Tim Harrington, Mark Smith, and Fred rounding out the top five. Smith timed the gate drop in moto two perfectly and was on the gas fast, leading from the launching pad through the chicane. James McLaughlin was looking good in second place, until he washed out exiting the chicane. Hoppy hopped past Smith for the lead, with Todd Town and Dave Terwilliger Sr. in tow. Michael Lenartowicz became a contender for a while until he knocked himself out of contention by stalling his Suzuki on the uphill portion of the Big Six Pack jump. On the final lap, yet more riders got stuck in the same spot. Hoppy won hands down, followed by Terwilliger, Harrington, Town and Smith. Hoppy (1-I) had a stranglehold on first overall, followed by Harrington (3-3), Smith (4·5), Fred Lucas (5-6) and Town (8-4), Terwilliger (I 1-2) was sixth overall, with Keith Lucas (2-12) seventh and James Mclaughlin (7-8) eighth. The Palmyra Racing Association members deserve kudos for taking the time and having the equipment on hand to create a suitable racing surface for the 50cc Pee Wee and 50cc Shaft and Drive classes. The "Rushville Rocket: Connor Kelly (1-1), and Cody Marriolt (3-3) carried the KTM colors high for first and second overall over the huge 50cc (7-8) class. with 18 young guns. Cobra charmers Jason Chacho (2-4) and Brandon Innes (6-2) earned third and fourth overall, with KTM rider Jimmy McLaughlin (son of Senior C contender James) earning fifth overall. The WNYMA returns to Hogback Hill on August 3 for round 17 of 29, and again on August 17 for the halfway points race for the WNYMA New York State Challenge Series. Scott USA heads the list of series sponsors, with $5000-plus of the best eye protection on the planet. Also, Mxride.com and Troy Lee Designs teamed up to help the WNYMA collect unwrapped gifts for the USMC Toys For Tots program: Troy Lee Designs donated an awesome youth-sized chest protector, and Mxride.com donated a complete set of Troy Lee Designs riding gear Uersey, pants and gloves, all ordered to fit} in hopes of filling 82 JUNE 25, 2003' c u e e Palmyra Racing Association Palmyra. Brian llImlMll (! a: a: :5 iO ~ HOWSTER, CA, MAY 26 Mondays are usually a day of rest for most motocrossers, but there were more than 450 riders who chose to race again instead on this Monday, After the combined efforts of Mutant Motorsports/Motowest Racing for the annual Memorial Day Extravaganza on Sunday, racers came back to take part in round one of Mutant MotorsportslIN Innovations Summer Series at the legendary Hollister Hills venue. Adam Miller of Prundedale was one of those riders who wanted to race on Monday, and it paid off for the Yamaha/Honda pilot. Miller took the win in the 125cc Pro class, as well as an exciting win in the half-time Dash For Cash. Miller ripped off two holeshots in the Pro class, and he followed those up with two mota wins, making it a 1-1 day on the YZ250F. Tony Wolf, who was also riding blue, finished the day in second with 3-2 mota scores. Taking third for the day was Suzuki jockey Robbie Baker from Clovis, with 2-3 moto scores. With the help of Billy Jurevich and Jeremy Kniesley, Miller made it an exciting half-lime Dash For Cash_ Kniesley started in the front row and wasted no time pulling out to a huge lead. The Novice rider (soon to be Intermediate) was in control up front, while everyone was watching Miller and Jurevich working their way through the pack from a last-row start. Miller had the advantage over Jurevich, though the two were passing riders almost simultaneously. It all came down to the last lap: Miller and Jurevich were closing on Kniesley, and it looked like Miller would prevail, but to everyone's surprise, Jurevich threaded the needle with a sweet inside pass on Miller. It appeared as though Jurevich was now going to take Kniesley and steal the win from Miller with less than a quarter of a lap to go. All three riders entered the turn before the Elevator Shaft, but only one rider emerged. And as the (semi-politically correct) saying goes, "It's not over until the big-boned lady sings." Apparently, that big-boned lady was still warming up, because Miller came flying down the Elevator Shaft in the lead, Miller laid the big Honda flat coming out of the shaft, with one hand in the air, taking the win. Now, that was a racel Jurevich didn't have the best luck in the Dash, but he prevailed in the 250cc Pro class, over Miller. Hollister homeboy Jurevich was on the gas in mota one, leading the pack from start to finish. Miller was on pace with Jurevich but had his share of problems and eventually finished fifth. Second in moto one was Wolf, followed by Robbie Baker in third. Moto two saw Jurevich get another start. with Miller close behind. Miller kept pace with Jurevich and kept the Honda upright in this mota. and he was able to make the pass going into the third lap. Miller never faltered and took the checkers, with Jurevich in second and Robby Baptista in third. Baptista had actually passed Jurevich and held second for a couple of laps, but when the white flag came out, Jurevich grew tired of looking at Baptista's Honda and took the second position back. Jurevich took the overall with his 1-2 tally, while Miller was second on the day with a 5-1 score. Wolf ended his day in third with a 2-4 effort. 60 BEG: 1. Mic:Me1 Fontana (KTM): 2.
