Memoria I Dunestown Series, Dino Catuogno and Stefan Neary have been battling it out over the lead in the Vet Novice class. When Neary didn't win a moto, it was usually because Catuogno edged him out at the checkers, and vice versa. This day would be the true test: 45 minutes under the hot desert sun on the Los Angeles County Raceway track during the annual Memorial Day running of the Dunestown Gran Prix. When starter Ed Tripp waved his green flag to get the 45-minute bout under way, it was Gabi Abayov who absconded with the holeshot, ahead of Neary, Greg Benton, Catuogno and the rest of the field. By the com- C1? hroughout Stefan Neary (575) and Dino Catuogno (991) were this close for most of the Dunestown Gran Prix. Catuogno passed Neary toward the end for the Vet Novice victory at round five of the Califomia Racing Club Dunestown Series. would quickly reel in the RM250 of Neary, erasing any advantage he had just accumulated. Catuogno inched closer to Neary, finally outjumping him on the penultimate lap for the lead. Neary gave it his all, but he just couldn't quite find a way back around Catuogno. The hard-fought win went to Catuogno, with Neary a close second. Abayov finished a lonely third, and Ritchie Thorup got around Freeman in the closing laps for fourth. Frank Costanzo's reign in the Vet Expert/ Pro class lasted about a quarter of a lap before Tye Hames flies down the Los Angeles County Raceway pavement section en route to the 85cc (14-16) class win. pletion of lap one, which included both the J.B. Memorial and Saddle Glen tracks, with a pavement section thrown in for good measure, Neary was on Abayov's back fender, and Catuogno had gotten around Benton for third. Abayov held off Neary and Catuogno for about 10 minutes before they both got around him, dropping him to third. Scott Freeman was inching his way toward the front after a mid pack start, and he held fourth, ahead of Benton and Jason Bikowski. Neary and Catuogno were glued together for the next 15 minutes until Neary upped the pace slightly to get a little breathing room. Neary appeared to be just slightly faster through the motocross. section, but every time they'd hit the pavement, the top end of Catuogno's CRF450R Bill Sauro made the pass and then checked out with the win. Jimmy Roberts, Jon Zahrt, Nick Mairose and Costanzo all took their turns holding down the runner-up position in a great race-long battle that saw Costanzo ultimately prevail. Zahrt claimed third, with Mairose and Roberts finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Michael Leib jumped out to the early lead in the 65cc (9-11) class, over Tommy Aquino, Chris Plouffe and Alex Laughlin. Plouffe passed Aquino and then inherited the lead when Leib went down at about the 10-minute mark. Leib was quickly back under way, and he repassed Aquino for second place and was slowly chipping away at Plouffe's lead, but time ran out and he would have to settle for the second-place trophy on this day. Third belonged to Aquino at the checkers, and Laughlin and Cody Eastman rounded out the top five. Shawn Rhinehart has been a hotshot in the 65cc Beginner class throughout this series, and this day was more of the same, as the KX65 rider made his way to the front of the pack on the opening lap and easily continued on uncontested for the victory. James Wilcox couldn't hold off Dalton Bailey, who slipped past at the midway point to finish in second place. KTM-mounted Dane Silverlake was way back off the start, but he fought his way up into a fourth-place finish, ahead of Kyle Prince and James Herz. Brett Harmon quickly established a lead in the 125cc Beginner field, only to go down within the first 10 minutes. Cody Murchant inherited the top spot and was hounded by Andrew Janes until he, too, took a soil sample. Murchant ended up greeting the checkers first with nearly a minute to spare on Harmon. Gabe Valente slowly worked his way up into a thirdplace finish, over Mike McCarron and Chris Shipley. Kawasaki-mounted Tye Hames was untouchable in the 85cc (14- 16) class. Hames went wire to wire for a seemingly easy win. Justin Sjoberg was runner-up after 45 minutes, with Jared Brown, Tanner Alexander and Sherri Cruse finishing third through fifth, respectively.
