food, keeping track of lap times and prepping gear. Generators roared, and the smoke from grills drifted in the cool night air. There was a sense of tension in the pits until you would see the distant light of your rider emerging from the trees, then relief as another lap was completed and another rider was safely back. Such was the case for Team Hedgehog. At 1:30 a.m., rider Steve Gordon was late, and minutes clicked by as the crew waited anxiously. When he arrived, all four mounts had broken on his headlight, and he had lost valuable time in the process. Able to secure another light, the team lost a lap and a position, but teamwork and determination paid off. Dawn arrived Sunday with little change in the standings. Team Proline KTM/KTM SE #1 still led but was nursing a coughing, smoking engine. Knight Line Products continued to hold second on their Kawasaki KX250, with Village Cycle Center A Team in third. Team KORE Sportcycles led Smith Power Sports (Terry Hughes, Corey Garrett, Bert Timpson, Eddie Davis, David Ray and Phillip Lallement) in Sportsman followed by Dirt Bike Supply. Phillips rested during the night, as James Embro continued to click away laps. Phillips remounted after sun-up and again began to post impressive lap times. Dirt Tech and Team Hedgehog (Clay Hedgepath, Aaron Sanders, Steve Gordon, Jason Moody, Jeremy Ketchum and Timmy P'Pool) rounded out the top five overall. The Sportsman winner was Team KORE Sportscycles, and they proudly accepted the overall $250 Sportsman award from Village Cycle Center. Team Dirt Bike Supply and Adams Motorsports (Ed Boardwine, Kimball Clayton, Adrian Gervais, Chris Coleman, Seth Clayton and Mark Tatum) completed the top three, finishing only 57 seconds apart after 24 hours of racing. Close behind was Smith Power Sports in fourth, with Central Alabama Motorsports rounding out the top five in Sportsman. The speed of Mike Phillips in the lronman class secured him the win and $500, over the persistence of James Embro. Matthew Crist, Tim Nagy and Gary Barr completed the top five. eN BRIEFLY. •• Three years ago Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club (PMMC) had a team of riders compete in the 24-Hours of Glen Helen in San Bernardino. Cal;fornia. The team has gone back every year. They enjoyed the event so much that it inspired the first Perry Mountain 24-Hour Challenge. which was held last year. That race drew 26 teams and four Iron men. Doty Pizzolato. the Southern Enduro R;ders Association chaplain. competed in the Ironman class for the purpose of raising donations to purchase motorcycle transportation for missionaries in other countries. To date. he has helped supply seven bikes to missionades in Sri Lanka and one bike to Mexico. He completed 11 laps. opting to rest during the night. and received a pleasant surprise when the Village Cycle Center A Team donated their prize money of $1000 to his ministry. Ironman Mike Phillips. former Florida Hare Scrambles Champion. ran the fastest lap time of 24 minutes 47 seconds and phys;cally led the race overall for four laps.
