back ahead of Stewart. Equally unfazed, Stewart passed Sorby soon thereafter, right in front of the mechanics' area. From there, Stewart continued his charge to the front. In front of him, he had Langston, Motoworldracing.com/ Suzuki's Daryl Hurley, Boost Mobile/Yamaha/Troy Racing's Brock Sellards, and Tedesco to contend with. Stewart made quick work of Langston and Hurley. while Tedesco and Sellards battled for the lead. Next on Stewart's hit list was Sellards. Stewart's lap times were roughly three seconds faster than the two leaders', so he quickly reeled in Sellards and was within striking distance by the next lap. Stewart stuffed Sellards in a berm and took over second place. Once past Sellards, Stewart went after leader Tedesco. By the ninth lap, Stewart smelled blood and was pressuring the YZ] 25 pilot. But Stewart was met by significant resistant. Tedesco put up a good fight as they diced around the track on lap nine. On the] Oth lap, Stewart made his move to the front. He maneuvered his Kawasaki next to Tedesco's Yamaha, setting him up for a pass over a dropoff jump/corner. The crowd cheered as Stewart passed his 38th rider, taking over the lead with still five laps left in the race. "Tedesco was riding great, a solid race," Stewart said. "I kind of set him my Own Race: 125cc ® Mike Brown 4th (5-5) The 125cc class points leader rode to a quiet 5-5 finish for fourth place. "This wasn't a great day for me, but I'm still in the points lead," Brown said. "I just got bad starts aU weekend. I'd ride my butt off to get to the front, did the best I can, but I think I could have rode a little faster at the beginning of the race. I still had some good lap times, and I'm proud of that. I'm going to stay home for a week or so before going back to Ricky's [Carmichael). I'll keep up the same stuff I've been doing and focus on the championship." @@ Steve Boniface 6th (3-12) The Red Bull/KTM/Thor racer continued to put good numbers up in the 125cc class. With a sixth-place overall he moves into the top 10 (9th) in the overall standing. "I rode good the first moto," Boniface said. "I got a good start, rode in fourth for five or six laps, then I was third and caught my teammate [Langston], so that was good. The second mota I had a pretty good start, but I was sick all day and was tired in the second mota. I did not sleep at all last night. But next time I look forward to coming back." '8 @@ Daryl Hurley 8th (14-7) The Motoworldracing.com Suzuki team got a great overall at Budds Creek out of Daryl Hurley, despite some mechanical difficulties in the first mota. Hurley ran with the leaders during much of the second maio, eventually finishing with a hard-fought seventh. "Wasn't too bad of a day," he said. "I got a good start in the second moto, which is what you need in the 125cc class· definitely about the starts. When you get out there with the fast guys, you can find the fast lines and stuff like that. First mota went okay, too. I had worked my way up to 11th and was pushing for 10th and the rear wheel broke up, the disk flew off, and I had no rear brake. So I was fortunate just to finish [14th] and get some points. A top lOin the first moto would have been better for my overall, but I'm getting better each week - which is a bonus." ® Steve Lamson 10th (13-11) The veteran racer continues to improve upon his results, this time putting the Escondido Cycle Center RM125 in 10th place overall. lamson is coming off a broken leg suffered early in the '03 Supercross season. "The first moto, I had a horrible start," said the two-time champ. "I got tangled up off the gate and came out almost dead last. Then I actually rode pretty good after I got warmed up, got a 13th out of it. Second mota, I finally got a good start, right around top 10 and made a couple mistakes in the first couple laps trying to run up front with the guys, but I'm happy with it. I've made improvements every week, which is good for me after being out for SO long. It's just tough getting my speed back up, getting in the pace with all these young kids that are pinning it. So I've got to continue to pick up the pace and get comfortable with it." ®~ Michael Byrne 16th (21-10) After making the podium at Southwick, "Burner" went a disappointing 21- 10 for a 16th overall at Budds Creek. Understandably, the "I knew I needed to get a start - up down in the corner, I knew he was going to follow the rut all the way through the berm, so I just went in and cut it short, flew right into him had to bump to pass out there which is what I did." For Tedesco, it was his first podium of the series after going 6-2 on the day. And with it, he moved from ] Oth to sixth in the overall standings. hadn't got one all year. I've been getting ] Oth- to 20th-place starts all year. So I knew I needed to get the holeshot to run up front. 1 knew I had the speed to stay there. I led the race for a long time, but Stewart was riding unbelievable. He's on another level than everybody else. I wish I could have held him off, but there are more races." In the process of his ].J finish, Amsoil/Chaparral/Honda racer wasn't all too pleased with his performance. "In the first moto I got taken out in the second corner, got up and got going, then I had a pretty big crash on the back part of the course - which was pretty much it. Not a good first moto. The second moto, I got pushed wide on the gate; [Michael) Brandes went down, and I got caught up with him_ I ended up out of the top 20 on the first lap then got up to 10th. My lap times were good, and I was riding fine, but I was so far behind. Man, it was just one of those weekends." ®'8 'Y Eric Sorby Stewart set himself into ] 7th place in the series points standings. His chances at the title are still mathematically intact, though. Budds Creek MX Parte Budds Creek, Maryland Results: June 15, 2003 IRound 5 of 121 5th (7-6) 125 M.OTO 1 (30 min. plus 2 laps): t. "I rode pretty good, but I'm sick all week," Sorby said. "I crashed so hard this moming; hit my head, and I didn't ride in the second practice. Tough. luck for the Boost Mobile/ Yamaha/Troy Racing rider in the first mota, though, as he more or less cased the landing of a drop-off jump and wrecked his carburetor. "I jumped too far and flat-landed it, stuck a bit in the mud and it just ripped the carb out of my bike. Second moto I went to the gate 39th and had a really crappy starting position. By the first lap I was in third; four laps later I was in second. But I was kind of upset that Langston passed me. That really bothered me. I rode as hard as I could, and a lapper got in the way, and I was screaming and screaming to get out of the way, and he wouldn't get out of the way. He ruined me. So it was just one of those things; that lapper just got me. But overall it was a pretty good day. I was happy with the way I rode." Q(O)oo ~~ Tommy Hofmaster 38th (39-29) The Shogun Motorsports/Yamaha Arenacross superstar rolled into Budds Creek with great intentions, but a couple of crashes put him down in an unfamiliar spot on the overall chart. "The first mota I got a midpack start, worked up to about 20th, then on the fourth lap, I went down in a comer. I started back in about 30th, got going again and was behind a pretty good group then lost the front end, crashed pretty hard and tore up my finger a little bit - ruined the handlebars. In the second moto, I went back in the start, started about last. I got going and ended up around 30th. We had a good time. We're healthy and looking forward to coming back at Red Bud." (0)00 ~ ~L:;] Randy Valade 27th (28-26) The Yamaha of Troy/O'Neal/Scott racer loaded up the van with his bike and an EasyUp and, joined by his girlfriend, made the long trek from Michigan to battle at Budds Creek. "The rtfst moto, I got off the gate decent, kinda snuck around the inside a bit and got around a few guys. Probably around 22nd for a while, until with a few laps left [Ryan] Mills decided to take me out. But it's part of the sport. Not a big deal. Second moto I got a terrible start, then the first few laps I kind of tinkered around a bit, didn't have my flow going at all, but the last few laps I picked it up and really felt pretty strong at the end. Overall, not such a good weekend. But I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to my home track at Red Bud." cue I e CN Upcoming Rounds: Round 6 - Buchanan, Michigan, July 6 Round 7 - Troy, Ohio, July 13 n e vv S • JUNE 25, 2003 13
