work to do, but my stamina was better than I expected, and I think I can definitely do good in the upcoming races. I will definitely stay on the 250 for the rest of the year." Carmichael's just looking forward to the most time off all year for him and the rest of the riders who raced 250s all year indoors. "I'm looking forward to the two weekends off," Carmichael said. "It's awesome. It's definitely well-needed by us guys. We've been busting our butts, and especially for us guys that raced Supercross, we've been wideopen the whole time. I'm going to go on vacation with my wife and some friends, go to the beach or something BRIEFLY••• Things went from bad to worse for Ryan Hughes and his broken leg. According to Red Bull/KTMlThor team manager Larry Brooks, - Rynocaught his foot in the dirt and twisted it backward· the same leg he'd bro· ken last week. "He twisted it all the way around, which was the same action that broke it." Brooks said. Hughes missed Sunday's main events and fell to third place in the overall points standings behind teammate Grant Langston and leader Brown. "I twisted my leg too many times, and it hurts, yesterday and today," Hughes said before the races started. "It hurts. I'm just going to stay off of it as much as I can and try to get ready for Red Bud. I've just got to wait it out, and hopefully I can do it at Red Bud. We'll see from there." On Saturday during practice, tempers flared when Ryan Hughes and Mike Brown banged handlebars a couple of times, the final time knocking Hughes over. Hughes reportedly caught up to Brown before they got back to the pits, and fists started swinging. The incident was well·documented by the AMA, and both riders got stem warnings, especially the one who threw the punches· Hughes. KTM team manger Larry Brooks said, Jim Perry [Yamaha team managerl saw it and said it was a 'straight out take·out.'" In addition to the warning, Hughes was slapped with a "Permanent Probation" penalty by the AMA's Duke Finch. "We'll be keeping an eye on both of them," Finch said. M Yet another top motocrosser is off the market for next year. Nathan Ramsey has re·signed with Honda. "I did the deal, and I'm good," Ramsey said. ''I'm staying with the 450. I'm happy, and those guys have been really cooi about everything with the injury. and I wouldn't want to be any· where else, so... " SoBe Suzuki's Stephane Roncada made the jump back up to the 250cc class at Budds Creek, filling in for the injured Sean Hamblin. And he made it a successful one with his best-ever 250cc National finish second overall. "I had a great day today," he said. "I've been training to race a 125, and I haven't been very successful, and when Sean got hurt last week, I decided to give it a shot on the 250 again. I couldn't really hope for a better day. The bike was perfect. and I had two great starts, and I had a great day. I'm really happy to be back in the 250 class. " Budds Creek promoter Jonathan Beasley and his crew dodged a bullet on Sunday when. for one of five days out of the last 30, it didn't rain at Budds Creek. "In the month of May alone it rained a total of 26 days, " said Beasley. "We really lucked out today." Stewart's best lap time in the first moto was the quickest all day, including the 250cc class. Stewart clocked a 2:20.130, and Ricky Carmichael's best time was 2:20.5 in moto two. According to Factory Connection's Rick Zielfelder, the Eastern-based suspension company will soon be opening a shop in Southern California. With its race operations already based in Corona, California, Zielfelder Red Bud and try to stay injury-free and healthy and win some races these next four weeks." eN like that, and relax and take some time away from the motorcycle. You know, that's all we've been doing is racing, racing, racing, and there comes a point in time when you need to rest and put things away to get better. I'm not going to change any training or anything like that, I'm just going to try to mentally prepare for Budds Creek MX Parte Budds Creek, Maryland Results: June 15, 2003 [Round 5 of 121 250 MOTO 1 (30 min. plus 2 laps): I. Kawasaki tuner Jeremy Albrecht's "Surfercross" event has ramped up for its fifth year with some big·name sponsors for 2003, including presenting sponsor Fox, along with Boost Mobile and Oakley. The August 45 event will feature numerous MX and Surf community athletes in a hotly contested surf/dirt competition. Albrecht even has Stewart signed up for the event, to which Bubba jokingly said when asked of his surf skills: "Black people don't surf, dude." Stefy Bau tried to qualify for the Budds Creek National. Bau raced the first two stops of the Women's Motocross League with a broken collar· bone and was still nursing it a bit at Budds Creek. Bau failed to qualify for the main event but did make it through to the Sunday morning qualifiers before a fall knocked her out of the nunning. "I just crashed in the qualifi. er, and I guess the handlebar went on my hand, and I kind of pinched a nerve," she said. "It was swollen up pretty bad, so the doclor wanted to take an X-ray, but nothing's broke, so it's good. I'm going to ride with the guys again at Red Bud and at Unadilla." The defending WML champ is in fourth place overall in the WML points chase. The WML's next race that coincides with the outdoor Nationals is at Washougal. SoSe Suzuki star pilot Branden Jesseman will return for Red Bud. According to his publicist. Jesseman got the go-ahead to start riding last Monday and "should be 100 percent by July 6th." With the changing soil conditions at Budds Creek, tire selection was a hot topic in the pits throughout the weekend. Said Honda's Erik Kehoe: "We thought we pretty much knew yesterday [Saturday] what we were going to run. But looking at this track, that can certainly change come the race. Budds Creek is unique in that it's almost blue-grooved in the race line and mud just to the outside." Dunlop's Broc Glover then spoke of the setup most riders were going with. "When the tendency is to run an intermediate to soft-terrain tire on the front. most of our riders tend to go toward the harder grade," Glover said. "In the rear, we tend to go the opposite way." Favored Dunlops included the 73gs in the front and 756s or the new 742s in the rear. A race-development tire, the 742s will be available to the public in about a month and will be standard on the 2004 CRs. According to Pro-Circuit/Kawasaki/Chevy Trucks team manager Alley Semar, racer Matt Walker will see his doctor on Monday (June 16) for an update on his progress. "We don't want him to come back too early and have what happened to Pastrana." Semar said. Walker is recovering from knee surgery to repair his ACL, MCL and meniscus. Also, Pro·Cir· CUlt'S Justin Buckelew started riding for the first time last week follOWing his injury. Sun, clouds, rain, mud and roost - loads of roost: This was the second-straight race that made for awful vision conditions. "It works on both the Scott systems [Roll Offs and tear offsJ. a series of bumps on the film that keeps it from sticking to the lens," said Scott's Bevo Forti.
