couldn't put it together and ended up fifth. Disbennett couldn't get his bike into gear, so he pulled out of the pit, and Thomas pulled in. He had to battle the front end for most of the run, but he refused to back off, ending Strank's winning streak with an 8.654-second run on his Yamaha XS650-based twin. "My riding was right with it, but I had the Yamaha overgeared," Thomas said. "It was a handful to ride, but it was fun." Strank would ~nd up fourth. Disbennett came within a few thousandths of a second of the 800cc win last fall, and after a quick adjustment he dropped the hammer on the big Triumph. His run looked just like his winning ride in the 540cc class, as he ripped past the timers in 8.573 seconds to seize the lead. Three riders later Watson lined up for his final pass. "Jeff Thomas loaned us some wheel bearings, and we put another chain on it," Watson said. "We hope it holds together, but I'm not going to ride around for points; I'm going for the win." He revved the Honda up and let it loose. He kept it on line, staying low over the second jump and scorched the top of the hill. As he landed off the last jump, the impact snapped the chain once again, but he had enough momentum to trip the timers with an 8.549-second time to claim the win. "Watson was just getting even for the 540cc class," Disbennett joked after another 800 runner-up finish. Watson was stoked after the pressure-packed win. "The chain let go right on the last jump," Watson said. "I knew I had enough speed to make it, and I looked over and saw the line and thought, 'All right - I got it.' Chad ran great today. He set fast time on the 540, but we got the 800 win. Now we have to go back and put a bigger cha in on it." eN Race Dates 2003 AMA 1. 2. 3. 4. Generallnformation 5.
