AMA District 14 Michigan Hare Scrambles Series Round 2: Battle Creek Motorcycle Club Gallt IILogs" a Win at Battle Creek By MARK SPORE BATTLE CREEK, MI, MAY 18 The second round of the AMA District 14 Hare Scrambles Series was held at the Battle Creek Motorcycle Club, with sunny weather and moist soil no doubt contributing to the large turnout of riders. Among the field of nationalcaliber Expert riders who came to do ~attle, Team Green Kawasaki's Chris Gallt showed up prepared to win. and he did just that. Gallt has previously earned the Michigan title twice, and he now concentrates on the GNCC and the National Hare Scrambles Series, where he is a defending A-class champion. However, he still enjoys racing in his home state during off weekends, as he is ensured some stiff competition. The Battle Creek staff put together a challenging 6-mile course, combining a familiar motocross track with some newly routed woods sections. The course workers made a great impression on the riders, as nearly everyone raved about the track. One section in particular stood out above all others: a log crossing section, which routed the riders over 61 logs placed one right after another, which provided some great spectating for the fans who came to watch. F&S Suzuki's Blair Bersano railed the outside of the first turn, giving the AA rider the 84 JUNE 18, 2003' eye . Expert·c1ass holeshot, and he earned himself a $50 bonus from Shawmut Hills Sales for doing 50. Bersano was able to build a commanding lead steadily, while some of the other Expert riders were having difficulties. Aaron Wegner, who was keeping Bersano honest early in the race, wrapped his Yamaha around a tree and was unable to continue. Corey Parlin, who sports the number-one plate as last year's champion, also plowed into a tree, resulting in another costly DNF for the Nevins Motorsports KTM pilot. Bersano's lead was cut short when an electrical failure put a premature end to his early getaway. This left the door open for Gallt, and he gladly moved into the lead on his Team Green KX250. After three hours of racing, Gallt ended up with nearly a two-minute cushion over second place, resulting in another overall victory trophy. "I knew I was handed a gift there," said Gallt of Bersano's misfortune. "I knew he was way out front. and then I noticed he had pulled out. I'll take it. The track was great; I thought they did a great job with the course." Honda-mounted Bryan Dunlap, who earned the victory at round one of the series, came through scoring in second place. As consistency is the key to winning championships, Dunlap's ride served as another step toward the District 14 title. Tudethout came through scoring next, earning the third-place points. The highest-placing non-Expert rider was again Clint Sumner, who earned the victory in the 125cc class and took sixth overall in the process. His efforts also resulted in a $50 bonus from Power Sport Parts, who put up the award for the top-placing non-Expert. In the Over 30 class, veteran Kawasaki rider Scott Curtis made it two in a row, as he has won the class in the first two events this year. FollOWing Curtis in second was Paul Guy. who had difficulties getting off of the line at the start of the race. Guy couldn't get his KTM lit at the start and was forced to give the rest of the Over 30 competitors a two-minute head start.
