seconds. The final rider of the round
was Strank. He was looking forward
to this hill.
"I raced amateur for 20 years on a
hill similar to this one, so I am used
to this," he said. "I have always
seemed to do well on 'timing-style'
hills, and hopefully we'll hit it today."
Strank blasted off the line on the
Yamaha R I, nailing the breaker; after
that it was all about horsepower. He
got the front-end light before the big
jump and was barely able to stay on
the bike as it tried to loop out, but he
made it. He held it on and didn't
crash and nailed a 6.667 -second run
to end the round.
"It was trying to get me, but I knew
iJ I could hold it on over the last
jump, I would land close enough to
break the Iights before I crashed,"
Strank said.
Smith had bike problems and
couldn't improve on his first run and
would end up sixth. Harry Denham on
the Southside Harley-Davidson
XR750 put together a solid effort to
crack the top five after a 7.661-second pass. Then Templeton stepped
up. However, he wouldn't be able to
get the clean pass he was looking for.
"I was just too aggressive and
overrode the hill," Templeton said.
"We are going in the right direction,
though."
James Large had a forgettable first
run, but the three-time 800cc National Champion unleashed his big Harley
on his final ride. He was on his game
over the breaker, and he had a lightning fast run up until the halfway
point.
"The front end was trying to come
up and over, and I had to finesse the
throttle instead of cranking it on,"
Large said.
He wasn't able to get a clean run
over the top jump to the timers, but
he still ran a 6.866 to take over second place. Watson wasn't able to
improve on his earlier run, while
Strank recorded his eight-straight
win. Large took second ahead of Watson, Templeton and Denham.
