Then it started to rain; it seemed Moose Run Morrison, Illinois Results: June 8, 2003 [Round 813) like I crashed a hundred times and hit every log and tree out there. I'm in a close battle with Brian Garrahan in the WORCS East, so finishing in front of him helped. I'm looking forward to the next round." The Moose Run itself also lived up to its billing as the toughest race in fumble, and Woodford was able to get away from him. Woodford seemed unfazed by the daunting course and seemed to be trail riding and pulling away, furthering the notion that the Moose Run was his kingdom where he reigns supreme. By the end of the fourth lap, Woodford had a big lead with Jarrett running a lonely second. Stavish was able to get by Davis, who was beginning to fade. Davis had worn himself out trying to keep pace with Woodford and Jarrett, and once the rain hit, he began to make too many mistakes, which cost him time and energy. Garrahan and Taber began to step up their pace and were able to catch Davis and take over fourth and fifth, respectively. Their tortoise-insteadof-the-hare plan looked to be paying off, as they continued to charge in the latter part of the race. Out in front, Woodford rolled Woodford made his mark and let it be known that he is indeed the king of the Moose Run. "My race went awesome," Woodford said. "It wasn't too good at the start because I fell in the first turn and had to get up and start last. I just tried to work my way through. Guys would fall here and there, and when there were bottlenecks, I would just try and get past as many riders as I could. Towards the end of the first lap I could tell I was getting towards the front; we got into some high weeds, and everyone was going cautiously, and I just kind of pinned it. I was taking a big chance by doing that; however, it worked out really good for me, and I was able to take the lead. "I don't think that anyone that has ever won one of these didn't take some chances now and then, so I'm happy it worked out," Woodford added. "After that it was just awe- Stavish looked to be a shoe-in for the Jimmy Jarrett was there, and I rode with him for a while. I've won now brake caliper and leave him to deal with the slimy course with only a back brake. Garrahan and Taber smelled blood, and within a few miles of the finish they both passed Stavish. Nelson made his way past Davis to finish sixth, with Davis finishing up in seventh. Weisenfels and John Strangfeld finished eighth and 38 JUNE 18, 2003' cue I some. I'm just happy to have finished this race; getting second is a bonus. The first n e vv s BRIEFLY••• Team Green's fred Andrews was a no·show at this year's Moose Run. and that apparently didn't sit well with some of the riders and promoter Bill Gusse. To give their friend a hard time, Gusse and many of the Pro riders got together and presented Andrews with a gift - a signed pair of women's panties decorated with kittens. Saturday's course was in a different location from Sunday's survival run. The Amateurs where blessed with an awesome course. which featured a cool moto track. fast loamy straights and some woods that were more in line with more traditional WORCS races. Many of the Pros wished that they could've raced on Saturday's track instead of Sunday's. The only two people looking forward to Sunday's course were Chuck Woodford and. of course, promoter Bill Gusse. who stated, "There are not too many promoters that are crazy enough to put on a race that the Pros don't want to come to, but I wanted to test these guys, and that's exactly what I did." Even though Chuck Woodford like the Moose Run. he admits it's a tough one. "The course is definitely the toughest race in America right now. - Woodford said. "It has so many slippery and slimy logs out there. so if you're not careful and are taking too many chance and just pinning it. it would be easy to fall 40 or 50 times or more per lap, which just takes your energy from you. It's not like there's just a stick here and a stick there. they're sticks all the way around and logs where there aren't sticks. so you have to be really careful and pick good lines to do well. On Saturday night the clothing company Reckless put on a huge party for the WORCS racers. They had three bands. a 50cc race, and an MX and BMX freestyle show, featuring X-gamer Mike Mason and Arenacross star Brandon Bartz. The party was on a pig farm. so it is fittingly called the Party at the Pig Farm. Another highlight of.the party was the wet T-shirt contest. Over 500 people attended this year's Moose Run. including Gary Gibbs and Enduro legend Dick Burleson. Gibbs will be tying the knot this weekend, so the party was a tame bachelor bash for him as well. Even though he won, Chuck Woodford didn't escape getting stuck. He had to have his box van towed out of the pits by a tractor after the race. But he wasn't the only one. Due to the thick mud at the facility, most of the vehicles had to be pulled out. Former National Enduro Champion Dick Burleson came out and rode. finishing well down in the field. "I had some setup issues right off the bat." he said. "I just got done using the bike in a magazine test in Texas. so the suspension was a little off. I basically ended up using the race for testing. I had fun: I tried to stay out of trouble. but on the last lap I got caught in a huge downpour. and it got pretty rutty. -
