Log Road Motocross: The 51 cc Auto Senior class goes hog wild on Log Road's big track at the Loretta Lynn's qualifier weekend in Bronson, Michigan_ 65 STK (10-11): I. Vaughn Mays; start he wanted but was riding like a madman. With less than half a lap to go. no one was going to dislodge Wentland from the top spot, and he won his second moto of the day hands down . along with the overall. Mark was now firmly encased in second, which matched his moto·one score and his overall finish for the event. Carpenter held the third spot; Gimenez let it be known that he wanted it badly. and he made a very slick inside/outside move to show Carpenter a wheel on the last lap. Car· penter was a tough cookie. though, and he fought off Gimenez's advances to claim third in the moto. This also gave the kid from Maryland third overall, besting Gimenez's score by one. The race for fifth was close, as Batistig and Frese were going at it like a pair of alley cats after a can of tuna. Batistig went wide with four turns to go, which was all the open· ing Frese needed to snatch away fifth for the moto. Batistig got the last laugh. as a finish two places better in moto one gave hjm fifth overall when all the points had been tallied. In the 51cc (4-6) class, Ross locked up the overall with a pair of great rides and a 1·2 score. Ross has been a top finisher in the class all year, and this qualifier weekend was no exception. Good starts and riding savvy make this kid's future look bright. Joseph Gomez Jr. (3-1) didn't get the start he wanted in moto one, which put a monkey wrench in his plans for the day: he finished a solid third. Moto two went a lot better, as Gomez got a great start and put in a strong performance, which put the Neilsville, Wisconsin, rider in the driver's seat from the drop of the gate. This gave him a second-place trophy to cuddle with on the ride back. Kory Schocke (4-4) wasn't the fastest kid on the track all day, but he was smart and qUick enough to reserve the last step on the podium with a pair of fourth-place finishes. This was well within qualifying for the next step at Dutch. and just what the doctor ordered in order to take a Tennessee vacation come August. The Log Road crew did a bang-up job all weekend long. pushing more than 1300 riders through the starting gates. The second annual Great Lakes Championships Will be held at Log Road on June 20. 21 and 22. and another large turnout is expected. Log Road Motocross Bronson. Baker grabbed the start. ahead of Florida's Johnny Logan, Lusk and Askew. Then Askew moved into second on the first lap. while Lusk moved Baker back to third. Lusk made the race complete as he dropped Askew from the lead on lap three. and race one ended with Lusk. Askew and Baker on the podium. Fellow North Carolinians Doug Earl and Justus rounded out the top five. Chisholm again ran away with the B class. Baker grabbed the moto-two lead but then dropped to third. as first Askew and then Lusk took the lead. Lusk was out front at the checkers. and he took the overall win, followed by Askew, Baker, Earls and Justus. Chisholm took the moto·two win in the B class, ahead of a hard·charging Jase Lewis, who is making the transition to the big bikes this year. Lewis tried hard but was unable to reel in Chisholm, who took the overall win, ahead of Lewis and Alabama's Shane Mills. Action in the Mini classes was hot and heavy all day. The rider who garnered the most success in the small·bore classes was Davie, who took the 65cc (10-11) win aboard his KTM and then broke out his RM85 to take top honors in the Preteen and the 85cc (7-11) classes. Local hotshoe Chase Borders aced the Senior Mini and Supermini classes in grand style. Chisholm and Lewis met again in the Schoolboy class, and while Lewis tried his hardest to take the win, he just was not able to match the pace set by Team Green's Chisholm. Cone Loretta lynn's Amateur Regional Warm-Up Monster Mountain Motocross Park Lusk, Davie Rule Regional Warm-Up By STEVE AND PEGGY CORlEE TALLASSEE,AL,MAY17 Riders from nine states came to Monster Mountain this month, each with a plan, hoping to get a slight advantage for the upcoming Southeastern Regional Qualifier for Loretta Lynn's to be held at the Monster in early June. Georgia's Shane Lusk came out on top of both Pro divisions, facing a stellar field in each class. Not to be overshadowed by Lusk's performance in the A class. Florida's Luke Davie went on a rampage himself, topping three dif· ferent classes in the Mini division. This month's race showcased a number of changes to the track in preparation for the upcoming Regional. Already one of the finest tracks in the country, the Monster has gotten even better thanks to Greg Cole and his Southern Dirt Crew. Cole added four huge spectator tunnel jumps, as well as several other new features. The tunnels will provide complete spectator access to the entire infield, making Monster Mountain the most spectatorfriendly track around. The changes were received well by the riders, and the racing action was top-notch all day long_ The 250cc AlB combined moto was the first moto of the day and featured a "stagger start." Florida's Jordan Peeples grabbed the holeshot. ahead of Alabama's Andre Pene and then Lusk. who wasted no time moving into second. and bringing with him Alabama's Drew Askew. Florida's Jason Baker held down fourth. Peeples and Lusk pulled out a small lead and then engaged in a fierce battle; the two went at it for the entire race, leaving Askew to hold down a lonely third. Try as he might. Lusk was unable to pass Peeples and had to setLle for second. ahead of Askew, Florida's Jesse Ballard, and Baker. While the A-class battle raged, Florida's Kyle Chisholm took his KX to a wire·to-wire runaway win in the B class, ahead of Florida's Eric Stewart and South Carolina's Craig Childs. Moto two's action was great. The race started with another Peeples holeshot. but Askew had plans for this race, and he got by Peepies immediately. Lusk held down third. with North Carolina's Paul Justus in fourth. s...... ($g UJ Q. ~ ~ r Q.
