CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Championships Round 5: Canyon Offroad Park St.. . ippleW\a~ St.. . ipW\i~es Coppe.. .state STORY AND PHOTOS BY ROBERT VAN DAMME GLENDALE, AZ, MAY 31 yle Strippleman took top honors In the 125cc Junior division at round five of the CMC Copperstate Classic, presented by Franklin £, Associate, FMF, Bent and Gordy's. Buddi Bruner was a double winner in the 85cc (12-13) and Supermini classes. The combined efforts of Zack McKinley and Bobby White in setting up the course drew many compliments. Strippleman jumped out front in the opening 125cc Junior moto, over Andy Straight, Greg Malenfont, Mark Soldevere and Ryan Bishop. Soldevere chose the inside line on the right-hander before the rhythm section and passed Malenfont for third. Alex Haag, who started seventh, passed both Austin Schnurr and Bishop on the south side of the course to move into fifth. On lap three, Sol devere tried the inside line through the rhythm section and was able to get alongside Straight, but then Soldevere miscued through the last set of jumps, allowing Straight to stay in second. Schwartz passed Bishop just after the finish line for sixth. Then Soldevere outjumped Straight going over Suicide Jump, completing the pass at the bottom of the hill for second. Strippleman was given the white flag with a IO-bikelength lead over Soldevere. However, as the pack came back into view from the south side, Soldevere had taken over the lead from Strippleman. Soldevere held on for the moto win, over Strippleman. Third went to Straight. Then came Malenfont, Haag, Schwartz, Bishop and Schnurr. K Strippleman was leading again in moto two, with Soldevere in second. Third was Troy Allen, followed by Schnurr, Straight and Ryan Nasser. Straight passed Schnurr on the start sweeper for fourth. D.C. Jones went by Nasser on the south side for sixth. Then, on the next lap, Jones passed Schnurr and Straight for fourth. Soldevere stumbled through the rhythm section, giving up real estate to Strippleman. On the closing lap, Schnurr went down just before the pair of tabletops, dropping out of the top 10. The Western Honda-backed Strippleman held on for the win, followed by Soldevere, Allen, Jones, Straight, Nasser and Haag. Bruner pulled the holeshot in the first Supermini moto, over Jeremy Williamson and Jeffrey Jenkins. Austin White sat in fourth as the pack came over Suicide Jump, and then came Taylor Robert and J.e. Redondo. On lap two, Redondo tripped, letting Tyler Littlefield move into sixth. Then White pulled alongside Jenkins as they came up the hill, completing the pass over the finish-line step-up for third. After that, Robert went down in the infield section, dropping out of the top 10. Williamson took the outside line going into the rhythm section, opening the door for White, who went up the inside and passed for second. Then Littlefield stumbled coming into a corner, letting David Dunch, Corey Ford and Daniel Huddleston go by. On the final lap, White tried to set up Bruner before the rhythm section, but Bruner cut to the inside at the last possible moment. Bruner held on for the moto win, followed by White, Williamson, Jenkins, Dunch, Ford and Huddleston. Jenkins pulled the moto-two holeshot, over Bruner, Williamson --Buddi Bnlner tallied 1-1 scores in both the Supennini and 85cc (12-13) classes a1 Canyon Offroad Park in Glendale, Arizona. 74 JUNE 18, 2003' cue I e n eVIl'S and Robert. White passed Dunch going down the hill for fifth. Then came Littlefield, Bobby Worth and Ford. As the pair of Kawasaki jockeys came out of the infield section, Bruner took over the top spot. Then, on the next circuit, Robert went down just after the second of a pair of tabletops. White darted left to avoid hitting Robert. Williamson tried to pass Jenkins from the inside, while White tried to go around Williamson from the outside. That let Bruner put some distance on the three-way battle. On the final lap, White drove hard on the outside of a left-hander and then went to the inside on the righthander that led into the rhythm section to pass Williamson. The O'Neal/ Maxima/Scott-backed Bruner pulled clear for the-moto win, pursued by Jenkins, White, Williamson, littlefield, Dunch and Ford. In the 125cc Beginners, it was Colin Ruthem taking the overall with a 3-1 score. Ruthem worked up from a ninth-place start to finish third in the first moto and then came out in the second moto with the holeshot and was never challenged for the moto win. Duane Anderson (1-3) took second overall. Matthew O'Brien (2-5) took third by coming from behind in both motos. Michael Pruett was in the hunt for the overall, even leading the first moto. At halfway, Pruett went down in the corner just before the rhythm section, handing the lead over to eventual moto winner Anderson. In the second moto, Pruett started third, right behind Anderson. As Ruthem checked out, Pruett overtook Anderson at the south end of the course for second, helping the Motorcycle Accessory Shop-backed Ruthem attain the overall. eN CallJlln IIffrlUId httc &leedale, Arizo... 1IeSlIIts: May 31, 2083 [Round 51 P/W BEG: I.
