high wall. Freixa met the same fate,
while Fujinami, Kuroyama and Jarvis
cleaned it.
The first big obstacle was section
five: Many wet rocks made it impossible to score less than three points.
Lampkin and Freixa fived it, losing
ground on the trio of Fujinami,
Kenichi Kuroyama and Jarvis. Only
Fujinami was consistently continuing
at a high level for the whole loop,
gaining a little advantage on his
rivals.
At the halfway mark, Fujinami led
with 15, followed by Jarvis and
Kuroyama with 21, but the latter
arrived a bit late on the time allowed,
so he was penalized by six more
marks. Lampkin was fourth, scoring
28, four less than Freixa. While in the
second loop, the leader did not yield a
step, the battle for second was close.
Jarvis wound up with the spot, though
his second lap was not superlative. By
finishing third, Lampkin avoided the
loss of his championship lead just yet.
DAVTWD
The second day opened with a cloudy
sky, but without rain. To the disappointment of everybody, the ra in
started to drop just as the top riders
entered section one, and alternately
dropped all day!
Organizers simplified five sections,
but the scores worsened due to the
mud dragged by the bikes on the
rocks. It made the rocks less grippy,
and the rain, not as heavy as the day
before, did not wash them clean
enough.
Fujinami and Jarvis started very
well, collecting cleans and dabs.
Also, Lampkin and Kuroyama proceeded very close in the points. The
only one who was a little off the pace
was Freixa, who failed section two.
Fujinami arrived at the last section
on the first loop with 14 points, five
less than Jarvis. But, incredibly, Fujinami did not climb the second big
stone, and he carded a heavy five,
dropping him to second place. Lampkin finished third, with 25 points,
while Freixa was fourth with 32 and
Kuroyama fifth with 39 mistakes.
In the second lap, ano~her big mistake by Fujinami at section three
allowed Jarvis to increase his advantage, which he held to the end.
Lampkin was again third.
