AMAINATC Ryan Young Products National Championship Trials Series Rounds 5/6: Tillamook National Forest (Left) Ryon Bell put in a couple of good efforts in Oregon. He finished second both days. still on the loop. Finally, with all the others in, Peters came motocrossing through the final section but was five minutes over his grace period, resulting in a DNF. With Peters DQ'd, Aaron took the win followed by Bell and Florin. Craig took fourth with 78 points, and Chaves was fifth with 84.5. "The time thing was a huge issue," Peters said after the event. "I had almost four hours to do the final two loops, which should've been more than enough time. I thought I was okay, according to the information I had (riders were told they could ride the loop in an hour). We just needed cantly easier sections. For this event, time would not be as big a factor as concentration would be, something Geoff Aaron has demonstrated that he has in abundance. Like Peters the day before, Craig would be the rider all eyes were focused on going into the final lap. The British Columbian dropped only more time." "I would say this was a really good enduro: Aaron said jokingly. "This area is amazing, and the conditions were perfect. There was a good vari· ety: hillclimbs, big logs, steps. The only thing was the trail was super long. That's just one aspect of trials that we don't normally have to deal with, so it turned into a race. The challenge was to try to stay focused while you are going so fast and hard." DAV2 In contrast to Saturday's event, Sunday's trial was held on a much more forgiving eight-mile loop with signifi· (Right) Andy Johnson went 7·6 over the weekend. 50 JUNE 18, 2003' cue I e n e vv s Tilla..ook National Forest Tillamook, Oregan Results: May 31-June I, 2003 [Rounds 516 of 131 (169); 10. Keith Wineland (Below) Wilson Craig was in the hunt all weekend, finishing 4·3. two single dabs on each of his first two loops and, for the first time in his career, led a U.S. National event. Aaron carded six first-lap points and a single dab on his second loop to hold on to the second spot, while Bell went 6-3 on his first two laps and sat in third. On loop three, Aaron coasted in after dropping two points, easily under the day's more lax time limit. Bell arrived next with three. A large group gathered at the finish to await Craig's final card. Craig arrived soon after with a dejected look on his face. "I just blew it," Craig said. "I lost my temper, and it all went downhill from there. I'm surprised I even ended up third. It was just a lack of concentration. ' An 11-point final lap dropped Craig from first to third. Aaron took the win with nine points, followed by Bell with 12 and Craig with 15. Peters and Florin rounded out the top five with 23 and 29, respectively. "I really thought Wilson was going to take it today, because he was so steady on his first two loops," Aaron said. "So I was just trying to do the best I could thinking maybe I could salvage second. As it turned out, it was a mental game, and Wilson didn't really have a good last lap. So, I'll take it." eN
