At this point, Bell and Florin made a conscious decision to break away from the pack in an effort to deal with the time issue - a plan that would prove costly at section eight. Section eight was one of those sections where no clean line was immediately evident. The top riders spent some 20 minutes surveying the situation and playing the usual mind games. Florin jumped in first and made an attempt to clear the threefoot gap at the exit but fell back for a .;XDUNLOP @TOVOTA ?y" Simply the !Jest/oryour bike. 'jni-=t~ five. Bell made a bold attempt, as well, with the same result but left the section clearly ahead of the others on time. After Bell and Florin moved on, Peters found a more daring line that, if ridden well, could produce a clean. Peters took a few extra seconds to set himself up in the section, then used a "zap" move to leap up a slippery rock and across the gap to the exit for a clean. Aaron attempted the same line but had to push out for a three. Craig and David Chaves took fives at the gap. Peters was equally impressive at section 14, which featured a massive log near the exit. It must have measured at least five feet in diameter. To make matters worse, the log was elevated off the ground. The Beta-man did a better job of positioning himself for the exit than his rivals and flew over the log for the only first-lap clean. Aaron faltered at the log for a five, while Bell and Florin got through wjth threes. After one loop, Peters led by eight points over Bell, 12 to 20. Aaron was in third with 24, while Sherco USA's Travis Fox was making a great ride in fourth with 30. Florin and Craig followed with 31 each. On lap two, Aaron discovered the key to sections six and 14, logging a clean on six and a one at 14 to post an II-point second lap to move into second place, while Florin moved up the order with a 12-point lap. The section that had been so good to Peters, number six, ended up being his most expensive section on the All Yamaha riders are eligible to win a 2003 TTR90 and TTR125LE! Bell posted a 21 and held on to the third-place spot. The final lap was an all-out race. There was no time to look at the sections, no time to discuss lines with a minder. There was only time to blitz through the sections, get your card punched and blast down the loop. Aaron was the fastest rider with the least points and turned in a seven-point final-loop card. Add to this six points for being 12 minutes late at the finish, and he ended the day with a total of 48 points. Bell managed to make it in just under the time limit, the only Championshipclass rider to do so, and turned in the second-best loop of the day with an 11. Florin got lost on the loop and carded 19 final-lap points plus 11 penalty points. He was sitting in third position with 73 points with Peters QUADS WILL RACEI PARTICIPATING DEALERS Hahm Mololsports Bellflower Motorsports Corona Yamaha Berrs Mega Mall Nol1h Kern Motorsports Moloworid of B Cajon John Burr Yamaha Yamaha in Goleta Entry Fee: .....$35 per class ...................... $20 for Pee Wee AMA Membership Required I ANY MAKE OF MOTORCYCLE IS ELIGIBLE FOR PRIZES AND POINTS Gates Open: 6 am Gate Fees: Adult. $10 Children 6-12 $5 Children under 6 FREE Bellflower Corona Covina Mission Yamaha Montclair Yamaha Temecuia Motorsports JMG Motorsports Pasadena Yamaha Westcoast Motorsports Alba Yamaha Yamaha of Cucamonga Yamaha of Redlands Maicolm Smith Motorcycles Chaparral Motorsports Fun Bike Center North County Yamaha Simi Valley Yamaha Thousand Oaks Yamaha Cal Coast Motorsports B & BCycles Kolbe Cycle Saies Pick-up "$5 OFF Entry" coupon at participating Yamaha Deaters. 626-97~ 661·725-3841 61 !t-442-ll941 BCajon 909-823-1338 Fontana 805-967·9898 Goleta 949-582-0351 Laguna Niguel Lancaster 661·948-1019 310-306-7906 Marina Del Rey 909-828-4748 Montclair 909-898-4123 Murrieta 661-259-8460 Newhall Pasadena 626·577·3000 909-943-2061 Perris 858-466-4380 Poway Rancho Cucamonga 909-987-2411 909-793-2833 Redlands 909-687-1300 Riverside 909-889-2761 San Bernardino 858-278-0198 San Diego 760-432-9501 San Marcos Simi Valley 805-522·3434 805-497·3765 Thousand Oaks 805-642-0900 Ventura 760-241·7367 Victorville 818-348-7865 Woodiand Hills Delano Antelope Valley Yamaha LA Yamaha Amateur Dealer Bucks for: YZ Riders, Pee Wee, 60ee, aOee, 125ee, 250ee, Vet, Seniors, Jr. Vets, 4-Strokes and Quads 714-563-1700 562·925-5097 909-738-8111 Anaheim For more information contact Glen Helen Raceway ~ visit www.GlenHelen.com or call 909-880-3090 "Mad Mike's MAYHEM" (#147) Enter the mind of freestyle motocosser "Mad" Mike Jones.
