AMA National ISDE Reliability Qualifier Series Round 1: Idaho City (Above) Former National MX Champion Gary Jones has his eyes set on going to Brazil. (Far right) Mike Nash stuffed his KTM in his VW Jetta and drove from New Hampshire to compete. (Left) Paul Neff finished up sixth overall. Caselli said. "I fell in one and blew some corners on the grasstrack on day two. It was a good weekend, and me and David did a good job as far as getting on the Junior team. Hopefully we'll get another good guy or two from New York, and we'll have a good chance this year." Caselli, however, nearly threw it all away in the final road section on day two. "It was kind of a dumb move; I was going down a flat dirt road in fifth gear, talking with this guy, and our bars hooked together, and we both ended up crashing just on a flat road," Caselli said. "I poked a hole in my shin and kind of dug a chunk of my bone out. Now I've got stitches and a tube in there draining it. Oh, well, I'll take it." Brian Garrahan, who was suffering from a mild case of heartburn, got off to a slow start on day one, giving up 39 points to the leader. Day two saw an improvement for the factory KTM rider. "I felt a little bit better today," Garrahan said. "I had consistent seconds [in the special tests], but David pretty much beat me in every test and beat me good." Although the Maxxis/Race Tech/FMF/Smith-sponsored KTM rider tied with Caselli on Sunday, it wasn't enough to lift Garrahan beyond the 28-point cushion that his KTM teammate built up on Saturday, and he headed home to California with a third. "The Boise Ridge Riders put on a great course every year; it's real fun," Garrahan said. "It's too bad that none of the people that are riding on the big [World Trophy] teams are out here." Alan Deyo won the Senior class. Chilly White, who went to the Czech Republic ISDE last year as a member of the Merced Dirt Riders Club, has ridden the Idaho City rounds since 1999 and hoped to finish good enough to qualify for Brazil. Riding a KTM 450, he found the competition tough but liked the course, describing it as " ... supergood, really enjoyable to ride, but physically demanding ... with lots of terrain that hadn't been raced recently and miles of side hills, where if you get one wheel off, it's a long way down." White finished in second place in the 450cc Four-Stroke class but only 47th overall and plans to try again at the New York round later in the month. Elmer Symons, the 2002 South African National Off-Road Champion, said, "It was awesome. The trails are very different from what I'm used to doing." Symons added, "I was just a bit unlucky. I clipped a rock with my chain guard, and it shot me off the Last year's U.S. Trophy team member Brian Sperle went out early on day one, the victim of a broken collarbone. With the next and only remaining round just weeks away, it's not likely that he will qualify for this year's ISDE. eN Idaho City Qualifier Idaho City, Idaho Results: May 31-June 1, 2003 [Round 1 of 21 O/A: 1. He loosened the clamp and slid the bars over and found a little trail at the bottom of the cliff to climb back out. He rode to the next gas where he was able to find someone with a set of bars that fit his bike . symons lost only 14 min. utes, ending up 74th overall for the weekend. BRIEFLY••• The last of what was once a series of Qualifiers. the Idaho City 100 is always a favorite among riders of all abilities. This year's event was no different. The 100-degree temperatures that hit the region just days before were cooled by a storm system that moved through on Friday. and the accompanying rain helped cut the dust. Approximately 300 volunteers pitched in over the weekend to help the Boise Ridge Riders stage this year's event. The 78th International Six Days Enduro will be held November 3-8. 2003. in Forteleza City. Brazil. This year's two-event ISDE Qualifier Series will be used to select the Club. Junior. Senior and Women's Teams. The U.S. World Trophy Team has already been prepicked and thus aren't required to ride the Idaho and New York Qualifiers. If there was an iron man award or an hard-luck award to be handed out. one of them sure· Iy would have gone to Mike Nash. After his two buddies decided not to come to Idaho. he needed a more economical means of getting from New Hampshire rather than driving his gasguzzling van. So he removed the rear seat from his 1998 VW Jetta. shoehorned his partially disassembled KTM 300 in through the trunk. followed by the wheels. handlebars. tools. gear. gas cans. etc.. and then drove 42 hours straight to get to the event. On top of that. he broke down on day one and didn't get to ride the rest of the qualifier. 42 JUNE 18, 2003' cue I e n e VII' :is
