Parts Unlimited World Off-Road Championship Series Rounds B (NationaIJ/3 (EastJ: Moose Run (Left) Chuck Woodford captured his third win in a row at the Moose Run in Illinois. (Below) Jimmy Jarrett wheelies away with the holeshot. One racer who is very familiar with this type of survival race is Team Green's Chuck Woodford. Having been on the podium the last three years, winning two of them and finishing second in the other, it appears that "Chuckie" has made a deal with the dark lords of the underbrush. Woodford has been able to traverse the grueling course with ease the last couple of years, making him a pre-race favorite. This year, however, Woodford would have to go up against some stiffer-thanusual competition who normally stay as far away from the Moose Run as possible, one of whom was WORCS National points leader, Montclair Yamaha's Ty Davis. STORY AND PHOTOS BY MIKE DEMAREE MORRISON, Il, JaNE 8 he Parts Unlimited World OffRoad Championship Series made its first-ever stop in Morrison, Illinois, for round eight of the WORCS National Series and round three of the WORCS East Regional Series. Morrison is home to the infamous Moose Run, touted as the toughest race in America, where .anything can happen and usually does. The participants in this year's Moose Run weren't disappointed, as the race lived up to its reputation. The course was muddy, rutty, slippery and slimy. There were enough logs on the ground to build a city, and the roots seemed to reach up and grab at whatever they could reach and send bikes and riders to the ground with a splat. T 36 JUNE 18, 2003' cue I e n e _ s Davis is well on his way to capturing a title, which has eluded him thus far, and is doing everything he can to seal the deal, so his crosshairs were aiming at Woodford. Other notables ready to take on the Moose king were Honda's Scott Summers, who already had beaten Woodford earlier in the year. Gbrotherracing's Brian Garrahan is in a heated battle with Yamaha's Jimmy Jarrett for the WORCS East crown, and both racers were going to do whatever it took to come out on top. Texas round winner Cole Calkins was also on hand, just coming back from carpal-tunnel surgery and wants nothing more than to get back to his winning ways. The stage was set for an epic duel of guts and glory. The best racers of the past and present on the most demanding course in the States with the skies ready to dump. It was going to be the rider who wanted it the most who was going to take the win. From the'very start of the race you knew this was a race like no other'. Garrahan elected to start behind the front row. "My game plan from the start was to be dead last and let the trail get burned in on the first lap," Garrahan said. "I know that sounds stupid, but if you get caught racing out front, you're bound to crash out or just plain get too tired to keep charging. This is a long gnarly race, and to do well, you have to save your energy and not make mistakes."
