The accident occurred on Interstate 64 in Evansville, Indiana, while team tuner Garry Baehler was hauling the team's equipment to the AMA GNC round at KC Raceway in Chillicothe, Ohio. The truck reportedly sideswiped another big rig parked on the side of the road and then burst into flames. Baehler, who was traveling with his 15year-old son, Cole, and a friend of Cole's, was able to extricate both youths from the burning vehjde. All three were transported by ambulance to Beaconess Memorial Hospital in Evansville, where Cole Baehler later died due to head injuries sustained in the crash. High winds may have been a factor in the accident, which is still under investigation. Also consumed in the fire were the team's two Honda CRF-based flat trackers, a Rotax fiat tracker, and a Custom Chrome chopper used by the team for promotional purposes. Gary Rogers, who rides for the team owned by his father, Craig, said that while the team is down, it refuses to be knocked out. "Obviously right now our number-one concern is in helping Garry Baehler get through this," Rogers said. "That's what's most important to us. And we will rebuild. We're going to be all right. Tulsa, OK 74128 ... n e vv s According to reports at Oschersleben, the MSMA has not as yet renewed its contract with the FIM in the World Superbike Championship, and thus maybe the input of the manufacturers to the job or rule setting will lessen. This theory is diametrically opposite to the view that Honda intends to lobby for the removal of the restrictors regulations before the world's biggest manufacturer returns with four teams in 2004. The problem they face is that Ducati and Suzuki (or at least Alstare) have invested a lot of research and effort into the restrictors and would be unwilling to walk away just because another manufacturer may want to invoke new rules to allow it to compete with many competitive bikes, at a relatively low cost. The main thrust of more than one Japanese factory's recent private statements is that they desire Superbike to go more along the line of Supersport, with lots of chassis changes allowed, but very few internal mods to be made in comparison to a normal Superbike. Engines, as everyone from Team Roberts to Petronas to WCM will testify, are the rides this year. With letters of congratulations from Senator Zell Miller, Congressman John Linder, Governor ~onny Perdue and Mayor Shirley Franklin, the motorcyclists set off from North Point Mall in Alpharetta, Georgia, for a policeescorted ride to the campus of North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, Georgia. Once at the destination point, participants gathered under clear blue skies for the Celebration of Life program. And what a celebration it was! Seventeen brain tumor survivors gathered to thank the motorcyclists for their support and generosity throughout the 20 years. One survivor, Graig, had even attended all 20 Atlanta Ride for Kids(r) events! Fran, a mother of a survivor commented, "Julia saw that thousands of people who did not know her, loved her. The rides have helped to heal our family." Julia received one of the Foundation's post-secondary scholarships during the Celebration of Life program. Dr. Roger Hudgins, a pediatric neurosurgeon, and Dr. Claire Majewski, a pediatric neuro-oncologist, were also on hand. Dr. Hudgins said, "This is my more difficult - and much more expensive - half of a racebike to get right. Ducati feels that a Supersport version of first time at a Ride for Kids event. It is absolutely a thrill. What you are doing is its big twin - any twin - will not be feasible against similar capacity four-cylinders. amazing. At the end of the day, the 2100 participants raised a whopping $287,136 to support the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's search for the cause and cure of pediatric brain tumors.
