Texas Regional Ponca City Qualifier Village Creek MX Park Hanford Fairgrounds: It's a special breed, but the 50cc Adult class has grown at each round of the CMA Bridgestone Pacific Coast Pro-Am Series. CMA Bridgestone Pacific Coast Pro-Am Series North/Central Finals: Hanford Fairgrounds Only the Strong Survive By EDDIE GRAVEUNE HANFORD, CA, APR. 26/MAY 4 With Centrai Caiifornia getting pelted by a series of late-spring storms, it took some doing, but the Pacific Coast Pro-Am series finaiiy came to a close. The Central and Northern regions competed separately in the early rounds of the series but came together for the finals. That alone would be reason enough to bring out a lot of racers, but the CMA added even more incentive: In addition to the Dealer Dollars paid in the earlier rounds, there would be series bonuses, huge trophies and other prizes. Just in case that wasn't interesting enough, the finals would span two days and consist of five motos per class! There was a lot of racing to be done. Things actually got started on Saturday, April 26, out at the Hanford track. The first two motos were to be run that day. with the final three on Sunday. Mother Nature had other plans, however. April 27 was rained out, and the next available date was May 4, so after a week off, everyone came back together to finish what they had started. Nearly every class featured full gates, but none drew bigger groups of spectators than the Pro-Am division, which featured some incredibly fast-paced, outdoor-style action. The heavy favorite going into the event was Fresno's Rusty Holland. Coming off of a third place overall at the previous weekend's AMA Western Four-Stroke National, Holland and his Clawson Motorsports CRF450R were working as one. From the drop of the gate, it was apparent the arena cross regular was on his game. Close behind was Suzuki-mounted Billy Jurevich - another arenacross rider. Jurevich proved that he's got game outside the tight arenas as well, but he couldn't quite match the sheer speed of Holland. At times, it appeared that Kerman's Robby Baptista would challenge for an even better finish than his eventual third place, but he gave people their money's worth. His thrill·a-minute riding style brought the fans to the fences, but he also had pressure from behind. On a track that favors big bikes, David Booth rode a Syndicate 559 YZ250F to the limit and aimost finished on the podium. Had it not been for the iong, rough straightaways, he would have done it. Matt Gaines rounded out the top five with a very respectable ride. Kyle Foltz did some serious work in the 125cc ranks. He competed in both the Intermediate and Youth classes and managed to win both. Dustin Somogyi and Trevor Doniak provided some pressure in the Intermediate division, but in reality they were more of an issue for each other than they were for Foltz. After five motos, Somogyi took second place over Doniak by a single point. Greg Karmann hassled Foltz a little bit in the Youth class, but Foltz managed to stretch out a comfortable points lead by the end of Sunday. The 250cc Novice class featured a reaiiy close race for the overall victory. Kevin Hurt and Jeff Merrill traded paint, moto wins, and probably blood before all was said and done. Going five motos against the same guys will do one of two things: create bitter enemies or foster friendly rivalries. The fact that these two didn't try to kill each other after the race says a lot about their character. They finished in consecutive positions in all but one moto. One of them was the winner in all but one moto. Hurt beat Merrill three times, while Merrill beat him twice. That was the difference that gave Hurt the overaii victory by one little point. It was one of the best battles of the series. Merrill did avenge himseif in the 25-29 Novice class, where he won over Craig "'Rapo" Ranells. If you're a circus fan or just like to watch big men ride little bikes, the 50cc Adult class was the place to be. An odd assortment of dads, big brothers and racers with too much time on their hands took to the track on XR50s. By the last moto, the track was so rough that some of them had a hard time staying on two wheels. They didn't make much dust, but when it settled, Michael Orr had topped Jarod Pack and Brian Harkenrider on the podium. When you have more than 20 classes with three motos each, you're in for a long day, and everyone was completely exhausted by the time things wrapped up. For those who were successful, though, it was worth it. The Dealer Dollars make the Pro-Am Series unique in that everyone from the newest beginner on up has a chance to win money that can be spent on their passion. As tired as everyone was, it was evident that folks already had their eyes on next year's series. That's probably why it's been dubbed "The series to win." Pipkin Goes Postal atPCQ exciting start as the youngest Team Green rider, Caleb Dowell, pulled the holeshot, with J.C. Comacho and Rodolfo Fernandez battling for position behind him. KTM-mounted Huntter Watson jumped the finish-line triple to take the third-place position, ahead of Krae Weldon and Riley Pemberton. When the checkers flew, it was Caieb Dowell with the win. followed by Fernandez in second and Watson in third. Weldon took fourth, and Pemberton rounded out the top five. Bradley Pipkin surprised everyone in the crowd by pulling the holeshot in the second moto. Fernandez worked his way to the front of the pack and held the first-place position until the end. Fernandez's 2-1 finishes gave him the first-place trophy for the day. Dowell's 1-2 score gave him second, followed by Weldon (4-4) in third. Watson (3-6) and Pemberton (5-5) rounded out the top five. Honorable mention goes to Bryce Dozier for his perfect scores in the 65cc (6·8) Stock and 65cc (6-8) Modified classes. and to Chaz Holladay for his perfect scores in the 85cc (7-11) Stock and 85cc (7-11) Modified classes. By SHELLY WATSON FORT WORTH, TX, MAY 3 Neither Friday night's wind, nor rain, nor hail could keep the riders from their appointed second round of the Ponca City Qualifiers at Village Creek Motocross Park. The rain made the track a little slippery in spots, but for the most part the track was in perfect condition for the 337 entrants on hand. The 125cc Stock Novice class was one of the largest of the day, with 29 riders on the gate. Kawasaki-mounted Brandon Pipkin made his presence known in the first moto by grabbing the holeshot and never looking back. Justin Little, Austin Miller and Sean Cherry battled for position throughout the race. When the checkered flag came out, Pipkin was the first to see it, crossing the finish line with a big lead in front of the other riders. Miller and Little continued to bang bars until the finish, with Miller holding on to second pi ace, followed by Little in third. Cherry was also mixing it up with the front-runners, finishing fourth. Fifth piace went to Biake Cochran. The second moto started just as the first had: with Pipkin taking the holeshot and jumping out to a good lead in the woods section. Devin Blackburn was also in the hunt for a trophy, but H. McMillan passed him in the offcamber section at the top of the hill to gain second piace. Cochran held the fourth-place position until the third lap, when he took a soil sample after the big finish-line triple. Cochran finished the race, but the fall cost him a trophy. Little and Josh Canfield finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Pipkin's stellar performance let him top the podium with first place for the day. With all of the exciting race action in both motos, the points would be the deciding factor for second through fifth piace. Little (3-4), McMilian (9-2), Canfield (6-5) and Cherry (4-8) finished second through fifth, respectiveiy. The fast riders of North Texas were what the 85cc Open race was all about. Kyle Cunningham, Matt Lemoine and Chaz Holladay topped the class in both motos_ Cunningham pulled the holeshot in the first moto, with Holladay and Lemoine close behind. All three held their positions throughout the race. Correy Timmons battied with Cole Taylor, while Richard White seemed to be pushing them to go faster as he raced at their back fenders. When the checkered flag came out, Cunningham took first place, and Lemoine finished second. ahead of Holladay and Timmons, while Taylor rounded out the top five. The second moto was almost the same, with Cunningham, Lemoine and Holladay again taking the top-three honors. Taylor's 5-4 score was just what he needed to take home the fourth-place trophy. White finished fifth in the second moto, but Timmons' 4-6 score gave him the fifth-place trophy. With 16 riders on the gate for the 65cc Stock (9-11) class, the crowd saw some great racing action. The first moto got off to an oyole Village Creek MX Park Fort Worth. Texas Results: May 3, 2003 50 STK (4-6): 1. Cade Moore (KTM): 2. Jay Dearing (Cob); 3. Brett Morgan (Cob); 4.
