International Old-Timers Annual Race Series Round 4: Riverfront Park Berenyi There, Done That By GENE HIGG1NBOTHI'.M MARYSVILLE, CA, MAY 3-4 After experiencing rain in Arizona and Palm· dale (sites of rounds one and two), one would think thalthe Old-Timers would've been prepared to deal with the downpour that began Friday night and continued well into Saturday in Marysville. California. The Riverfront Park facility is located in a riverbed, which might lead one to believe there would be lots of sand_ Not so. One of the features that make Riverfront a truly great track is the combination of sand and lots of silt and clay. Charlie Sexton has operated the facility for more than 20 years, in all kinds of weather. This weekend, he did all he could to help before the start of the first race on Saturday, but the track was still a muddy challenge. After a delay of an hour or SO, the first race of the weekend was on the starting line. The Over 60 and Over 70 Experts drew the short straw and had to go out first. Actually. according to the rules, they go out first at each round, but this time being first was no advantage. Someone said, "There is no way the 70-year-olds will complete a lap in that mess" - but they were wrong! There were twelve Over 70 Experts, and though many had dropped out before the end of the first moto, they rode the track. and many of them finished all five laps. Gene "Higgi" Higginbotham was on the line and nearly got the holeshot, but Alberta, Canada's ZoU Berenyi swooped across his bow in the first turn and never looked back. Higgi followed Berenyi at an ever·increasing distance, thinking after a couple of laps that it wasn't all that bad. "Just like the old days of riding enduros in Northern California," Higgi thought - just before his front wheel decided on a different direction than Higgi had planned on taking. and he down he went. As the rest of the class went by, including defending class champion Tony Armada, who shouted a very audible "Tsk, tsk." The electric start on Higgi's DRZ400 was a blessing. and he was once again on his way. Soon. Higgi began to see many of those who'd passed him earlier down in the mud themselves - including Armada. (Tsk, tsk). Sierra's Gene Hrobsky blasted through the mud. as did Washington's Fred Sessions, and they placed second and third. behind Berenyi. Higgi went down three times (bless that electric starter!) and still managed fourth. Berenyi was the Canadian National Motocross Champion in 1966 and 1967 as well as the Canadian Old-Timers National Champion for nine years. At the end of the first round of motos. which featured similar experiences (even Master rider Eric McKenna went down in the slick stuff) and additional rain. a general riders' meeting was called, and a vote was taken as to whether the final round of motos should be canceled for the day. Jackie Ladue (bless her for all her help during the weekend) stood on the top of her trailer to take a count; it was close, but the "nays" won. and the rest of the day was devoted to serious bench racing and socializing. .--------...---,,........----------------------,'" ~ z a r '" w z w co ~ i!~!i!i!r!~~!i1\f~~~.~.'~;11(1 ~ . Riverfront Park: Zoll Berenyi receives the checkered flag on his way to a perfect weekend and first place overall in the Over 70 Expert class at round four of the International Old·Timers Annual Race Series in Marysville, California. The rains continued during the night and throughout the morning, and many riders called it a weekend. Only four of the Over 70 Experts were on the line on Sunday, including "Mr. Optimist" - Asker Larnkjaer (bionic hip and all), but not including this reporter. Conditions were worse. Lamkjaer fried a clutch by the second turn. While Berenyi was motoring around the track like Tinkerbell, Hrobsky completed a lap and decided to wait for the checkered flag. Sessions also made a lap, pulled over and caught his breath: after a bit, seeing Hrobsky pulled over. he decided to go one more lap for second, giving Hrobsky third. Then the sun came out. By the time the second round of motos was on the line, there was dust and mostly singletrack, and compared to the mud. it was great. The Over 70 riders came to the line for their last moto. This time, there were four again; Higgi was back in, and Larnkjaer was out (due to that fried clutch). Berenyi ended up having a perfect score for the weekend. Hrobsky placed second for the tie breaker, over Sessions, who took third, and Higgi was fourth overall. The efforts of president Johnny Hall, Stacy and Jackie Ladue, who really made it all work, were much appreciated. Annie McCarthy, the International Old-Timers' secretary, survived one her greatest challenges: scoring the event with all of that mud. Riverfront Park Marysville. AHMRAlThe Classic Motor Cycle/Metro Racing National Dirt Track Series Round 2: Shippensburg Speedway Morgan, Richtmeyer Double at Vint ST By BEN BREECH SHIPPENSBURG, PA, MAY 4 Tom Morgan and George Richtmeyer left the Shippensburg Speedway round of the AHMRA{The Classic Motor Cycle/Metro Racing Vintage National with a pair of wins each. Morgan topped the 250cc and 600cc Sportsman finals, while Richtmeyer took the Classic 500cc- 7500c event on his brakeless hard-tail Triumph and the Sportsman 7500c contest on a mid-'70s-style Triumph with rear brakes and suspension. Riding the small track like he was on a modern 250, Richtmeyer quickly got in front of Craig Breckon, Carl Forkey, Mark Fillebrown and Chris Giles at the start of the Classic 500cc- 750cc final. Forkey and Breckon battled for second in the early stages, with Forkey taking the spot coming off the fourth turn on lap four. Breckon remained very close for the remainder of the race, but Forkey stayed in front. Richtmeyer shot into the lead of the 750cc Sportsman event as the field completed the opening lap, with Barney Waldron, Lew Woods, Bill Reynolds and Michael Headman follOWing. After getting nudged by Richtmeyer on his way to the front, Woods recovered to take second from Waldron as they started the fourth lap. By now, Richtmeyer had again pulled his disappearing act. Reynolds moved cue I .. up to pressure Waldron for third in the closing laps, but Waldron held him off. In the Sportsman 250cc event. Morgan was first out of two. over Donnie Warf. Steve Bromley, Ken Weiss and Bill MacQueen. The top three stayed the same during the race. but MacQueen took fourth just past halfway, and in the closing laps he was banging on Brom· ley's rear tire, trying to take thjrd. Proving he's not just another "pretty face," series sponsor Don Miller of Metro Racing worked his way up to sixth, right behind MacQueen and Weiss, on the final laps. After falling in his heat, Morgan's starting position for the Sportsman 600cc final wasn't the best, but he started fourth. behind leader Bromley, Ed Fatzinger and Larry Weiss. At the end of the first lap, Weiss took second and slipped under Bromley for the lead entering turn three on the third lap, but his lead was short-lived, as Morgan had been moving up also and now powered by on the outside as they started the fourth lap. After a slow start, Nick Taylor got his Yamaha 350cc twin rolling, taking third from Fatzinger on the seventh lap. With doubles being the theme of the evening, the name "Weiss" appeared twice in the "winner" category: Larry won the Senior (50-60) event, and his son Adam topped the '70s Singles contest. Larry's win was a followthe-leader affair, as he took the lead from n eVIl's JUNE 4.2003 71
