each rider would actually have two more chances to lock in a fast time. Gerry Bennett ran a 3.656, and then his Reiser's Cycle Service teammate James Large put in a top three ride that was thrown out because he went out of bounds. Indianapolis Southside Harley-Davidson rider Libhart clicked off a nice, smooth 3.402second run to climb into third while 800cc rookie David Price ran a solid 3.640 to close out the first round. Templeton's clutch problems continued on his second run while Strank got prepared. Strank had another strong launch, but he got too much air, costing him a time, but he still managed a 3.345-second pass. Watson's second ride wasn't as clean as he would have liked, and he dropped behind Strank after a 3.396-second pass. Disbennett clocked a 3.616 as he continued to improve with every ride. Large was next, stopping the clocks at 3.468 seconds on his Harley-Davidson. Price cased the double hard to finish out the round with Strank in the lead by .051 of a second. The ruts became a big problem for the final round, so Watson had his work cut out for him. When he left the line, his chances at the win went up in a cloud of dust. "My dad changed the bike before this ride, and it nearly left me behind on the start," Watson said. "That bike has never pulled that hard before. I jumped way too far and will have to settle for second, but I can't wait to ride the bike on the longer hills coming up." One rider who was able to put it together was Disbennett. He put the Doyle Disbennett-tuned Triumph into third overall with a 3.346-second blast. "This is not my favorite hill, but I took third and fourth today," Disbennett said. "So that's a great way to start the season." Strank's winning streak stretched to an 800cc class record, seven in a row, ahead of Watson, Disbennett, Libhart and Large. "It amazed me that we tied on the first ride," Strank said. "On the second ride I just tried to put a smooth ride through; I wasn't worried about the time, and it just worked out." eN UTell therYl you read about it in Cycle Nevvs" Goshen Iron Horsemen Motorcycle Club Middlebury, Indiana Results: May 18, 2003 (Round 11 800: I, Walter Strank Jr. (Yam); 2.
