Parts Unlimited World Off-Road Championship Series Round 5: Washougal MX Park Brian Garrahan (pictured) finished sixth overall, taking the checkered flag about 10 seconds behind David Pearson. Desert racer Brian Brown rode well in the slippery Washougal mud. Brown ended up eighth overall. jump, and it sent me off, and I swapped," Caselli said. "I landed sideways and swapped all the way into the corner. I got bucked over the bars and landed in the wall of the turn. I was done at that point." Pearson and Davis kept charging to the front, while Smail cruised up front. On the last lap, it was smooth sailing for Smail, who held about 20 seconds on Sheak, with Raines, and Naughton about a minute back, and Davis close behind them in fifth. Garrahan was being hounded by Pearson but ended up going down in a highspeed section. The crash cost him one position. At the checkered flag, Smail had finally shook his demons from the past and won his first WORCS race. Sheak finished a distant second, and third looked to be going to Raines who had pulled away from Naughton with about a mile to go. But Raines, who had gambled with his fuel supply, came up empty. "I wanted to gas early and try and race to the finish; however, it didn't work out," Raines said. "About a mile from the end, I ran out of gas. I guess the good thing is, now I know how far my bike will go before running out." Since Raines was out of commission, Naughton was able to move into third with Davis close behind in fourth. The hard-charger award went to Pearson, who came from a last-place start to finish fifth ahead of Garrahan. Phil Stevens, Brian Brown, Raines and Nathan Kanney rounded out the top 10. Smail let out a huge sigh of relief and was stoked to finally pull down a win. "I'm pumped; this has been a long time coming," Smail said. "We've been struggling with our results in the past couple of rounds, and it feels good to finally win one. I really enjoy the WORCS races, and to be able to win here at Washougal is extra special. My WR worked awesome today; I can't say enough about the guys at The Brothers Powersports Racing and all my sponsors that have helped me out. I couldn't have been here without them." Davis was happy to make it through the race and pick up points. With two rounds remaining in the West series, Davis holds a commanding lead over teammate Pearson. eN Washougal MX Park Washougal, Washington Results: May 18, 2003 IRound 5 of 6J O/A: 1. "f just couldn't get going today. I was trying everything I could but was going nowhere. The track was awesome, especially the grasstrack. I wish I could have done better." ~cD@ Jason Raines 9th "1 had a great time today: Raines said. "1 don't usually get to race against other riders except for the GNCC guys, so Ws was a lot of fu,n. The track was a lot of fun, too. I really like the fact that they have a parade lap so that you can see how everything is setting up. The WORCS staff did a great job. I'm looking' forward to racing another one. " cD happy I finalJy made it up to the podium," Naughton said. "J've been working hard to Robert Naughton 3rd "I'm get up here, and it feels good to have finally made it this year. I wish I could have passed Raines (who ran out of gas while running third] while he was racing, but that's racing. I'll take whatever I can get." !O\ ;;:v David Pearson 5th "1 had a pretty good race considering I got taken out in the first turn," Pearson said after working his way up to finish fifth. "1 just put my head down and pinned it. I got up behind Garrahan and was stuck there for a while. I'm happy with my results, considering I went from last to fifth. " ® GNCC regular Jason Raines was running third late in the race when he ran ou1 of gas. He still nabbed ninth place. Following Naughton and Raines were Garrahan and Davis. Coming from well back in the pack were Pearson and Caselli, while Pearson had moved his way up to Davis and Garrahan. Caselli's day came to a premature end when he miscued off of the ski jump. "I hit a mud patch at the top of the and I were going for it. I can't believe the pace of these WORCS races. The extra hour definitely makes a difference back East. At this race, once the gate dropped, we were full throttle the entire two hours. There is no messin' around here. If you make one mistake during the race, you're out of it. Man, it was fun." 36 JUNE 4, 2003' eye I e nevvs Kurt Caselli DNF "I felt real good; I just had some bad luck," Caselli said. "I was a little excited considering this is my first big race back lafter an injury]. "Smail was hauling; I tried to get in behind him, but I couldn't make up any time. This race was awesome; the WORCS crew did a excellent job." Ty Davis "I did pretty good today: Davis said. "I only hit my foot once at the end. It still hurts. It actually feels like it's buming right now, but I'm happy to get some points. If I would have gotten a better start, I might have been able to run with Sheak and Smail. My lap time was close to theirs; I just wasn't up there to battle with them."
