AMAIChevy Trucks 250cc U.S. Motocross Championship Round 3: High Point Raceway (Left! Timmy Ferry (151 traded podium spots with teammate Chad Reed (221. bu1 Ferry's secondmoto come-from-behind charge landed him third overall and lett Reed off the podium for the first time this outdoor season. (RIght) David Yuillemin looked much better at High Point on his VZ450F. He really likes the track. He went 5-5 for fifth overall. and forth for a few turns, with Carmichael again establishing himself as the leader before the end of the lap. Windham kept the pressure on, and the race for the lead caused the battling duo to lose time to Reed in third, albeit temporarily. Ferry closed in on Reed by about the halfway point, and Windham did the same with Carmichael, only to encounter some lappers at an inopportune time, which eventually allowed Carmichael some breathing room. "A little bit [of trouble with lappers]," Windham said. "The track has off-camber turns with one main line. I don't think [I had more trouble] than any other rider. It was a tough track to pass on. You just kind of pick and choose and do the best that you can." Windham kept Carmichael honest out front for much of the rest of the race, but he was never close enough again to strike. "I got both holeshots today - that was a first all year long for me, supercross and motocross," Carmichael said. "That makes it a lot easier. I knew Kevin was going to be good. His bike is really fast. I am fortunate that my two-stroke is really fast, or I probably would have had it handed to me today. Kevin is really good, and he knows how to use that thing to his advantage. Me, I have to ride really, really hard and try to ride at a tempo that he won't be able to hold on. That is what I did today. "I know how to beat Kevin. I am not going to sit here and tell you guys how to do that. I know what I need to do to beat him. I have been racing him for a long time. He is a great competitor. He is going to have good motos where I probably won't beat him, and the opposite. I just need to take advantage when there is a track that I like. I knew that he would be good here because he rides really good on this kind of stuff - the track was a little bit smooth. We are going to a track [Southwick] that I really like, so that will be an advantage for me. I am looking forward to that." Windham finished a strong second, going two motos without crashing for the first time this year. "I am happy to be on the podium, which is a big step for me," Windham said. "I have been putting in strong performances, but at the same time I am down like 30 points on Ricky. That's not a good deal. Coming into the season, I didn't know what to expect. I got some time at the track with Ricky. I set my bar high. All I want to do is beat Ricky. Coming into a season with that attitude, it's hard to succeed at your goal every weekend because he is just ripping it up. At the same time, I took a year and a half off. It is good to be back. [I have to] keep focused and keep a level head and keep plugging away. I am (Lett) Mike laRocco rode well. although he didn't think so. He came from behind for a 7-6. sixth overall score. (Right) Sean Hamblin traded moto finishes with LaRocco for seventh overall. 28 JUNE 4, 2003' cue I .. n .. _ s just happy to keep it on two wheels." Ferry had his strongest showing of the year, chasing down Reed from quite a way behind to pass him around lap 10. He immediately gapped his teammate and went on for third overall with a 4-3 score to Reed's 3-4. "It was a good race for the fans and for me because I got the better end of the stick with Chad in the second moto," Ferry said. "The second moto was much easier than the first. You know, Ricky and Chad have both beaten me at every race this year, and that was the first time I heads-up beat Chad, so it's a start. I'll just go on to Southwick and try to build on this. "[In the first moto] we were close right by the mechanics' area. I almost came in on him, and there was no way I could have made the pass and both of us stay on two wheels, so I backed off. [In the second moto] I got by him. We were close, but that's racing." And as far as the record is concerned, Carmichael knew it was quite
