Scott stepped up the pace in moto two and was steadily gaining on Evanson but ran out of time before he could reel in the Croe Hunter. Evanson finished first, with Scott and Butler taking the second and third podium spots. R.J. Boehnke set the pace for the 60cc Beginners in moto one. Austin Katayma and Jessy Norton banged bars for second and third. Boehnke streaked toward the first turn ahead of the pack in mota two, with Jerry Beaver and Chase Slayton side by side, finish- ing second and third. Boehnke took home the big trophy, with Beaver and Slayton second and third overall. Cody "Blue Jean" Denham looked great in his first outing since recuperating from a broken arm. Denham had the big blue thumper railing through the corners in the 125cc Junior contest. Drew Ivey was close but couldn't match Denham's speed. Tim Winter and Justin Benzel were third and fourth in moto one. In moto two, Denham and Ivey went back and forth for 3 1/2 laps until Ivey dropped a front wheel in a corner, giving Denham some breathing room. David Zeigler was third, with Tyson Ralston fourth. Ralston gets the "Worstto-First" award in this round, going from 15th in moto one to fourth in moto two. Traction wizard Andrew Denham of Skagit Powersports was on hand with trackside sup· port, getting the right tires for riders. Round sponsors Pro-X L.A. Sleeve gave away cylinder sleeves for lucky PRO riders, while SDG handed out seats. Hom Rapids ORV Park Richland. Washington Results: May 10. 2003 (Round 7) 50 AUTO: I. Brock Sittrnan (Yam); 2. Daugherty and Giannini moved up into third and fourth, respectively. Giannini appeared to be getting a second wind, as he quickly reeled in Daugherty. Morgan enjoyed a I5-second cushion over the second-placed Hall. Giannini was able to get around Daugherty for third and was closing in on Hall. Giannini appeared to be noticeably faster in the high-speed canyon, and he quickly closed the gap on Hall. Giannini pulled to within a bikelength of Hall as the two went over the gO-foot tabletop. Once in the canyon, Giannini sprinted past Hall for second. By now, Giannini had also cut Morgan's lead in half. Two laps from the end, Giannini had pulled to within a few bikelengths of Morgan as they headed toward the canyon. Giannini was the first back into view, with five seconds to spare. Giannini cruised to the checkers for a welldeserved victory. Morgan held on for second. and Hall filled out the final spot on the podium in third. Daugherty and Padilla rounded out the top five. Results Glen Helen Raceway Park Giannini Glistens at SRA GP By DAVE DAIN SAN BERNARDINO, CA, APR. 25 Glen Helen Raceway played host to the fourth round of the Southland Racing Association's Gran Prix Series. With the National just two weeks away, the riders were greeted with a preview of what the track would be like. The track proved to agree with Danny Giannini, as he captured the overall in the Four-Stroke Expert division. Honda-mounted Eric Baker got the jump off the gate and led the fieid into the steep "Talladega" first tum. Giannjni followed in second, with Brad Daugherty, Victor Padilla and Brian Morgan round.ing out the top five. A mere bikelength separated Baker and Giannini as they headed up "Shoei Mountain." Morgan moved up two positions into third. Morgan wasted little time going for the lead, passing both Baker and Giannini coming down the Mountain. Morgan continued to lead as the pack headed out of view. Baker was the first to re-enter "Bud's Creek." Former leader Morgan trailed, a close second. The two continued to battle as they worked their way around the track. Morgan's pressure paid off; he passed Baker over the double just past the grandstand tabletops. Once in the lead, Morgan was able to gradually pull away from the field. Baker remained in second, while Matthew Hall moved up several positions into third and was catching Baker. At the midpoint. Morgan enjoyed a 10-second lead. The battle for second was starting to take shape between Baker and P/W 0-1: I. Calden Mata; 2. [an Marshall; 3. Sean Murphy; 4. Garrett Forsyth. P/W 0·2: I. Megacross Martin Takes Two at Megacross Shootout By NIKKI DlJRANCZYK MENDOTA, IL, APR. 26 Round two of the Megacross Shootout Series boasted another huge turnout of about 300 riders, all hungry for their share of the factory contingency and Expert·c1ass purses. As usual, the Expert classes were jam-packed with talented riders. Wisconsin's finest - Ross Martin, Brad Modjewski, Matt Hopkins and Greg Hochmuth - all made a trip to Megacross to clean house in the A classes. Martin was the big winner on the night, scoring the 125cc and 250cc A victories. In the 125cc A heat race, Martin took the holeshot on his Ace Powersports/Pro Action Suzuki. Modjewski soon took the lead and pulled away for the win. Martin and Hopkins had a good battle for second, with Martin getting the nod. Martin picked up another holeshot in the main, followed by Modjewski, Hopkins and 17 other riders. Port Yamaha's Hopkins passed into second on the first lap, but Modjewski reclaimed second before the finish-line whoops. Martin held on for the win, while Modjewski and Hopkins had a race to the finish, with Modjewski prevailing. Hopkins, Hochmuth and Tad Tyrrell rounded out the top five. Modjewski piloted his FMF/American Suzuki to the holeshot in the 250cc A heat race. Martin moved into the lead; then the two riders swapped back and forth until the checkers flew, with Modjewski picking up the win. Andy Thyberg claimed third. In the 250cc A main, Martin rounded the first tum in the lead. Modjewski wouldn't give up without a fight, and he made his way around Martin but couldn't make it stick, and Martin picked up the checkers. Meanwhile, the race for third was a three-way battle among Hochmuth, Tyrrell and Kevin Markwardt. Hochmuth picked his way through the pack to take the third-place finish. Chris Antolak cruised to the 65cc heat win on his Tuf's Kawasaki. In the main event, KTM-mounted Steven Page had the early lead, but Antolak moved into the front spot and started pulling away. Page didn't give up; he kept charging, behind Antolak. On the last lap, Antolak made a mistake, and Page was right there to capitalize on it and take home the 65cc win. The 125cc B class had a huge tumout and was split into two main events. In the first ,...,..=---~--~------~--------------------, z o x i5 ~ lil > '" § .
