Madras Vintage Days Northwest Maico & CZ/AHRMA Regional MX Series Round 2: Willow Creek Motocross Park • In a Ro\X/ For Ro\X/ Ik STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT MADRAS, OR, MAY 17-18 Z-mounted Oregonian Jim Row ravaged the competition for a pair of Expert-class wins during the Vintage motocross portion of Madras Vintage Days, held at Willow Creek Motocross Park, deep in the heart of central Oregon. Row's dual wins, which came in the Open Age and Sportsman 500cc Expert classes, were no surprise, as the AHRMA Open Age Expert-class National Champion, who hails from Portland, convincingly won four motos in a row - everyone he entered. While Row was the undisputed King of the High Desert, there were several other key performers, including Washington's Randy Skiver. One of a multitude of the event's out-ofstaters (who came from six Western states and Canada). Skiver was the event's lone triple-class winner. The former AMA National TT and road-race star has showcased his motocross prowess all season long, and this weekend was much the same. Skiver, riding Penton and BSA machjnery, took home a trio of trophies after his impressive performances in the Over 50, Classic 500cc and Classic 125cc Expert classes, all coming with 1- 1 wins. Skiver's first overall victory came by a substantial margin, as the Penton-mounted rider grabbed wins in both Classic 125cc Expert/Intermediate motos. Husqvarna-mounted Oregonian Bryson Williams pulled the holeshot in the first moto, although his lead was short-lived; he took a tumble, relinquishing the point position to Skiver. That was about the only time that Skiver didn't lead, though, as he came back to beat Suzuki rider Russ Wyatt in both motos convincingly. Wyatt did all he could to narrow the gap to Skiver's Penton/ Honda hybrid, but the fourstroke seemed to hook up better than Wyatt's TS 125 did, and Wyatt was C (Above) Oregon's Jim Row won the Open Age and Sportsman 500cc Expert classes at Madras Vintage Days, held at Willow Creek MX Park. (Right) Randy Skiver scored the Over 50, Classic 500cc and Classic 125cc Expert victories - all via 1-1 finishes - in Madras, Oregon. left stranded with 2-2 placings. Williams recovered to top the Intermediate class with a 2-1 tally, followed by Forrest Waldron (1-2), Penton rider Rick Nicholson (4-3), Dino Medina (3-4) and Glen Finnerin (5-5). An impressive field of Over 50 contestants were planning to put the stops to Skiver, but not even Oregon's Bill Row nor former Canadian National Champion Terry Hyde could dethrone Skiver at thjs round. While Bill did have a great ride, finishing second via 2-2 placings, the CZ rider from Springfield - like all others who faced Skiver on this day - could only watch from a distance as the BSA rider burned the competition again. Jim Row, who last season was consistently among the elite riders in the Expert classes in the AHRMA National Series, put on quite a show while taking his dual-class wins. In fact, Jim's margins of victory were substantial. On several occasions, Jim held as much as a 16-second lead on the second-placed rider. Local rider Aaron Hohman, riding a thoroughly worked over, Powrollpowered Honda XL350, gave Jim some competition in the Open Age class, though Jim prevailed in the end. Hohman and Californian Terry Bentley finished next, with Bentley netting second overall, ahead of fellow Golden State rider Steve Parker. Jim, riding a 1973 CZ 400, did similar damage in the Sportsman 500cc Expert class, roosting the competition badly. Hohman was again Jim's closest competition, but Jim managed to find the faster lines on the high desert and capped off his second of two overall wins with convincing style - not bad for a rider who just two years ago broke his back in National competition and missed a great portion of the series. The consistent Chris Wilkes finished third overall aboard his C&J-framed Honda, followed by Maico rider Todd Kohlmeister. There were many other great battles at this event, including both Sportsman 250cc Novice motos. Tom Owens and Bultaco rider John Fourcroy waged incredibly close battles in both motos, from the snap of the rubber band to the wave of the checkered flag. The lead changed several times every lap in both motos, but in the end, Owens prevailed. Owens' late-race pass in moto two garnered the Husky rider an overall win in the day's largest class, followed by Fourcroy (2-2), Rick Jones (3-4), Jim Dallas (5-3) and Jeff Down (4-6). Washington's Ron Predmore and Montana's Marty Paulson split moto wins in the Premier 500cc Intermediate class, which was won overall by the Matchless-mounted Predmore. Canada's Ken Burningham, the lone Expert rider in the field, overcame problems in moto one to top the field in moto two aboard his potent Tri-BSA hybrid. eN Willow Creek Motocross Park Madras, Oregon Results: May 17-18, 2003 [Round 2 of &1 else 125 NOV: 1.
