"In one of the first tree sections, I came into one of the corners too fast and hit a log and went down pretty hard," Brown said. "I twisted my back. Later I got by Russ when he crashed, but by the end of the race my back started to really stiffen up, and Russ got back around me." Brown would end up fourth. One of the more underrated riders of the series, Robbie Zimmerman, was once again the first 250cc across the line for fifth overall. Zimmerman has long been a fixture in the AMA/District-36 hare scrambles scene and is now showing his versatility with consistently strong desert results. After a strong finish at the previous round, Malcolm Smith Motorsports/ FMF/MSR-backed Paul Krause was again haVing an exceptional day on his KTM 525. "I was right with the lead pack," Krause said. "Then I saw Rob Phillips' bike flying through the air. We slowed to wave at some people on the course to come over. When we got to some tall grass, everybody was just going hairball through it, and you couldn't see what was in there. I started to lose touch with the leaders there." Finishing the first loop in sixth, Krause started having bike problems. "The throttle was sticking open, stuck closed," which was okay, he said. then ran over him, he never even stopped to get his card marked. It was pretty slick, so it wasn't completely his fault. It was the funniest thing 1 have seen in a desert race in a long time." The series now takes its traditional summer break, retuning for round five in Wells, Nevada, September 6. CN second loop. When we came into a check, I thought I would get him on the acceleration out. PreviouS Krause was forced to retire and make a lonely, cold trip back to the pits. Precision Concepts rider Andy Grider finished sixth on his Honda CRF450R. This was his first ride back from an injury. "I got a good jump off the line and then shifted and hit neutral," Grider said. "I went left over the hilltop and was able to pick off a lot of guys that way and get up to around 10th by the middle of the first loop. I was battling with a Kawasaki rider [T.J. Roof of Africa" winner has had an injury-riddled season here in the States. He got a midpack start, sandwiched in a 15-rider freight train. Since passing was very difficull, it wasn't until some of the slower riders fell that Elmer was able to get away and come on strong for a respectable 12th-place finish on his Malcolm Smith Motorsports KTM 250. Many of the desert regulars were caught out by the late-winter conditions. The Expert riders hit a high-speed road section in the second loop during the height of a hailstorm. Some were sporting welts after the race from the impact of the hail. When the Novices reached this same section, it was no longer a high-speed road but instead a muddy quagmire. Noticeably absent from this round was defending champ Ty Davis. Davis reportedly broke his foot earlier in the week. Destry Abbot is going in for arthroscopic surgery later this week to have his knee cleaned up. He will miss the upcoming WORCS race in Washougal and the Idaho City Qualifier. cue I e n e _ S • JUNE 4, 2003 49
