Lengle has emerged as the top Junior rider on the East Coast and is now at a point where he could hold his own against Califomia's top Youth competitors. Like Lengle, Buman has a maturity in the saddle beyond his years, and both have benefited from racing on the highspeed Square Deal Riders quarter-mile track in Harpursville, New York. Organizers had hoped to run three rounds of racing, but they were only able to complete two Division One rounds and one Division Two round. After a second wave of downpours forced the organizers to call off the rest of the racing, Windsor, New York's Craig Estelle and Cary, North Carolina, local Ronny Kemp were the top Division One competitors, based on their points totals at that stage of the evening. Round two of the ECSS wi II be contested at St. Alex Speedway in St. Alexis-des-Monts, Quebec, Canada, on June 28. Resuhs D-l: 1. (TIE) Craig Este:lIe/Ronny Kemp; 3. Calhoun Supercross: David Seals was runner-up in the 125cc Beginner event and the winner in the 250cc Beginner class at the seventh round of Moto-Madness in Calhoun, Georgia - despite just returning from two broken wrists! Drew Wilson stood steady with two seconds. Kawasaki rider Michael Alford leamed a good lesson on how important the last moto is by edging out Kawasaki jockey Jordan Porter. The 60cc (10- 11) event was the property of Dustin Waters, on his Kawasaki. Suzuki rider Dylan Taylor edged out Kawasaki jockey Josh Womack with slightly better finishes on this evening. The 60-80cc Preteen contest was Wilson territory; Drew scored a strong last-moto win on his Suzuki. Honda rider Trenton McMichen looked good for the overaU until Wilson's last moto. Suzuki rider Timm Matthew smoked 'em in the first moto. but a third-place finish in the last moto at least kept him on the podium. The 80cc (12-15) class was the Tyler Home class, as he took a two-moto sweep on his Yamaha. Darrell Fricks, also a Yamaha man, scored two second-place finishes, and Honda rider Chad Whidby rounded out the top three. The Youth (12-15) class was a hard-fought battle. Home, on the Yamaha, took first place, over Honda rider Clayton Henderson from LSD Racing. Lance Tucker put his Honda in the third podium position. The young men of the 125cc Beginner class put on quite a show. Yamaha rider Adam Free took top honors by winning one moto and ending up second in the last moto. The story in this class was that of Yamaha rider David Seals. who broke both wrists a month ago but came back sporting two wrist braces and still scored second overall. Is that tough enough for you? Kawasaki jockey Kenny Hicks finished up third with two good moto finishes. The 250cc Beginner event was another hard·fought contest. Seals won both motos on his YZ250, so apparently his wrist braces seem to work. Honda rider Jeff Dowda wasn't to be bested by anyone but Seals, and he scored two second-place finishes. Kawasaki man Nathan Dover finished strong in the last moto to eam third the hard way. When these guys move up, watch out! Michael Henderson, on his Freewheeling Honda, topped the Over 35 class with no problem. Yamaha-mounted Martin Homs got second the hard way, by edging out Honda rider Stanley Dowda in the last moto. As extra touch-up work on the track was required. this caused the race to finish a bit late. but the Kelly boys want the best for the riders. There were no ambulance rides, which is always a plus for everyone. Results PN/ SHAFT: 1. Holli Russell (Yam); 2. Colton Ford (Yam): 3. Travis Norton (Pol): 4. Alan Sparks (Yam); 5. That was the case on May 3. as round one of the 2003 East Coast Speedway Series kicked off at Hammerdown Speed· way in Red Springs, North Carolina. The ECSS was developed by the Northeast Speedway Racing Association to bring speedway to a wider audience on the East Coast. Having hosted the 2001 Mid-Atlantic Speedway Championship, the one·fifth-mile Hammerdown oval was a logical venue at which to launch the new series - that is, until North Carolina's fickle spring weather was factored into the equation. Torrential downpours plagued the event, and only a lucky break in the weather and hard work by local promoter James Berry and his support crew from the NSRA and presenting sponsor Cape Fear Harley·Davidson allowed for an abbreviated 11-heat program to be run. Despite the uncooperative weather, a highquality field of riders was in attendance. For· mer Grand National flat·track campaigner Craig Estelle, indoor ice speedway champ Ronny Kemp, and 2003 ICE Rookie of the Year Chris Strong were among the more than 20 riders looking to score points in the ECSS. The standout performers of the evening, however, were two competitors barely into junior high school. Chip Lengle of Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, and Binghamton, New York's Mikey Buman were both on the gas and absolutely fearless as they tackled their elders on the slippery Hammerdown strip. n e vv s Trail-Way Speedway Surprises Abound at Trail-Way Night ST By !.EN BREECH HANOVER, PA, MAY 3 At Trail-Way Speedway's first night short track in more than three years, surprise finishes were the order of the night. Among the many surprises was the fact that the race even ran, since the previous two yearly attempts at night racing were rained out. Also, a rider made his first start in more than 18 years a winning one. Raun Wood put his Scott Powers ports Honda at the point of the 600cc A final. Behind him, Ricky Winsett, Shawn Baer and Jared Mees traded positions several times per lap. On lap four, Winsett went into tum one a little too hot and tucked his front wheel under and fell; this caused Mees to let up briefly, letting Wood and Baer pull out several more lengths. Wood led the rest of the way until he drove into tum one a little hard on the final lap and slid coming off two, letting Baer take the win on his Battlefield Harley-DZlvidson/Baer Racing Products/VPE-sponsored Rotax. Most of the same riders returned for the Sportsman final. Mees got the lead from Wood, Baer and Winsett. This time, Winsett picked his spots better and took over second by the end of lap two. Baer dropped back, and Jason Isennock and John Lewis moved up to fourth and fifth. Mees kept his Lancaster H-D/Michael's Classic H-D Rotax in front the rest of the way. After suffering a flat just after the start of the 750cc heat, Mees got his Johnny Goadtuned Harley rolling and took the lead from Barney Waldron at the end of lap one, and George Richtmeyer dropped his buddy back another notch. Mees started pulling away, while heat winner Wood had a little too much power in his Honda RC51 in the damp night air and was battling for third with Lew Woods and Waldron. With two laps left, Mees had problems with his swingarm, and entering the first tum on the final lap, a bolt in his disc brake backed off just enough to lock up the rear tire. The battle for third earlier became one for the lead. as Wood couldn't hook up right, while Woods' Triumph hooked up better and took the win by a length. Brad Phillips was the quickest 250cc B rider off the line, followed by Jonathan Jordan. Matt Young and Brandon Robinson. Jordan took the lead entering tum three on the third lap, and Robinson moved into second. Robinson moved into first on the sixth lap, while Jordan fell in the fourth tum on the next lap. After dropping out of racing almost two decades ago, Adam Weiss returned to racing. He shook off the "track rust" by taking the 500cc Two-Valve lead from Jim Chapman, Tom Sisson and Mark Stambaugh. The top three stayed close, with Chapman pressuring Weiss for first on the last two laps. They crossed the finish line side by side, with Weiss getting the nod on his Larry's Service Centersponsored machine. Results 50 OIL·INJ: I. Dalton Worthington (KTM); 2. Dyllln Bletlner (KTM): 3.
