Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Motocross Series Round 3: Hurricane Hills Sports Center Cook Clever, Plotts Persistent BY JIM P. SANOERSON CLIFFORD, PA, MAY 4 Yamaha of Camp Hill/RRP's Jeremy Cook and Crossroads Powersports/RRP's Damien Plotts topped the J25cc and 250cc Pro/Expert class podiums, respectively, at round three of the Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Series at the beautiful Hurricane Hills Sports Center in Clifford. Pennsylvania. Cook had a perfect day, getting great starts and riding to a 1-1 tally for the overall in the 125cc Pro/Expert class. In the first 125cc Pro/Expert moto, Cook nailed the holeshot and rounded the first tum with the iead. trailed by Dave Ginolfi, Chris Hunter, Bromley Suzuki's Barry Carsten and RRP's Ty Wallace. Just after the start of lap two, Wallace passed Carsten to take fourth. Less than a quarter of a lap later, Plotts passed Carsten for fifth. The top three were already spreading out by the start of lap three. Plotts was showing Wallace a tire in the corners, hoping Wallace would make a mistake - but it was Plotts who came into the big, sweeping turn by the start too hot, which also caused Wallace to crossrut. Carsten capitalized on both mistakes, sneaking around the inside to claim fourth. Wallace and Plotts were relegated to fifth and sixth, respectively. The leaders spread out considerably by lap four. Then Casey Clark caught and passed Wallace to take fifth. The top five went unchanged until the last lap, when Wallace passed Clark to retake fifth with half a lap to go. Cook crossed the finish line with a foursecond advantage. Rounding out the top five were Ginolfi, Hunter, Carsten and Wallace. Plotts led the start of the final 125cc Pro/Expert moto, with Cook, Carsten, Wallace 7~' MAY 28,2003" cue I ... and Ginolfi in tow. The top five spread out quickly and remained unchanged until late on lap three, when Plotts went down, handing the lead to Cook. Carsten inherited second, Wallace was third, Ginolfi was fourth, and Charlie Ellis was fifth. Plotts remounted eighth. Cook had his work cut out for him, as Carsten and Wallace closed the gap on Cook by lap five. The three were all within a bikelength of each other for the remaining laps of the eight-lap moto. It was anybody's race for the win. Wallace eventually passed Carsten on lap seven to take second, and then he caught and passed Cook on the back tabletop to take the lead, but Cook came back to retake the lead on the downhill tabletop. Then Carsten slid underneath Wallace in the next corner to retake second while the crowd went wild witnessing such unbelievable racing. Cook managed to hold off the two veterans for the remaining half a lap for the moto win and the class overall. Rounding out the top five were Ginolfi and Ellis. Carsten (4-2) took the runner-up spot on the podium and now leads the 125cc Pro/Expert class in series points after three of five rounds. Ginolfi had his best finish of the series and rounded out the podium via his 2-4 rides. Carsten led the start of the first 250cc Open Pro/Expert moto, with Clark. Wallace, Bruce Stratton and Hunter in tow. Wallace blew by Clark and Carsten two tums after the start to claim the point position. After 2 J /2 laps, the top-five running order was Wallace, Carsten. Stratton, Hunter and Plotts. Plotts mounted a charge to the front and passed Hunter on lap three for fourth, and then he got Stratton for third two turns later. Plotts then managed to pass Carsten before the start of lap four to take second. Wallace nevvs Hurricane Hills Sports Center: Jeremy Cook (360) took the lead on lap three of the final 125cc Pro/Expert moto at the round three of the Northeast Classic Series in Clifford, Pennsylvania, trailed by Barry Carsten (79), Ty Wallace (behind Carsten), Dave Ginolfi (461) and Chris Hunter (505). crossed the finish line with a six-second lead, with Plotts, Stratton, Carsten and Hunter trailing. Plotts pulled away to a small five~second advantage by the end of the moto. Rounding out the top five were Wallace, Clark, Hunter and Carsten. Plotts's 2-1 tally topped Wallace's 1-2 finishes for the overall, and Plotts now leads the class in series points by one over Wallace. Hunter's 5-4 rides were good enough for the remaining tier of the 250cc Pro/Expert podium. Hurricane Hills Sports Center CliHord. Pennsylvania Results: May 4, 2003 (Round 3) PIW: 1. APR. 19-20 The first-ever Sandia Classic was a huge success, with more than 200 entries attending rounds five and six of AHRMA's Pro-Flol Progressive Suspension Historic Cup Series on the short but flOWing 1.I-mile Sandia Motor Speedway circuit. Along with practice on Friday, a riders' school was offered. The festivities, sponsored by Chick's HarleyDavidson/Buell, also included a bike show and swap meet. So who are those Formula 750cc guys? Thank Atlanta's Keith Campbell for bringing those beautiful orange-and-black XR750s out west! On Saturday, Florida fast guy Tim Joyce took to the front and won, with former AMA Grand National Champion Jay Springsteen coming on strong in the last laps. On Sunday, Springsteen sprinted away at the green flag and had Joyce trying so hard that he ran off the track into the hot pit area, made an incredible sphincter-tightening save, reentered safely and secured second. In Sportsman 500cc competition, Nevada's Paul Shoen, local favorite Steve Brown, and North Carolina's Andrew Cowell were dicing so much, they should have been at the Sandia Casino down the road. Saturday, Shoen and Brown battled all race long, with Shoen winning, Brown second and Cowell third. On Sunday. Cowell and Shoen were again out front. Shoen went down in the hairpin on his Triple Specialities BSA B50, testing the AirFence, and leaVing Cowell and Brown to duke it out. Brown won in front of his family and friends. Florida's Indian-mounted Will Harding sure likes to ride those dinosaurs, taking first on Saturday and Sunday in Pre- 1940 and Class C Handshift racing, with Sandia Classic Grand Marshal AI Knapp and Moon Man·sponsored Steve Melton following. "Fast Freddie" Mork won both days in the Class C Footshift, with Kenneth Genecco second. Bultaco-mounted Jim Neuenburg also brought home a first Saturday and Sunday in the 250cc GP. In Sportsman 350cc racing, Honda-mounted Brown crossed the finish first on Saturday and Sunday, while Honda riders PauJ Dunning and Tom Pruett traded second and third each day. In the 350cc GP, Neuenburg's 1968 Romero/Zemke-sponsored TSS Bultaco finished in first Saturday and Sunday. Ducatimounted Craig Breckon from Michigan and AJS-mounted Bruce Yoxsimer traded second each day, and Honda rider Tim Mings from L.A. was consistent with two thirds. Formula 125cc riders Greg Steinbeck and Tim Sheedy swapped first and second on the weekend. Santa Barbara's Jeff Elings also had two winning days on his Buzzard Racing Matchless G50 in Classic 1960s. l Battling brothers and BEARS riders Craig and Andrew Murray were banging bars for the
