mixed in with some lapped riders, allowing Walker to close the gap a bit, while Boruff and Sipes passed Carroll. On the finai portion of the lap, Boruff and Sipes waged a heated battie for third; Sipes got by Boruff on the final section of whoops before the checkers. Saylor clinched the win, followed by Walker, Sipes, Boruff and Carroll. "I got the holeshot: said Saylor, "and Walker came in on the inside as we raced side by side. At the end, the lapped rider helped put a cushion between us. n Walker got the second-moto holeshot, followed by Saylor, Sipes and Boruff. Saylor took the outside line on a sweeper to attempt a pass on Walker, but Walker remained in con~ trol of the lead. Sipes pulled up beside Saylor, challenging for the runner-up spot, while Saylor moved to Walker's rear fender. Saylor piioted his BSY Yamaha/Fox/Pro Circuit/Scott bike beside Walker in the whoops. Walker bobbled, sliding sideways, and Saylor made his pass through the end of the whoops, taking the lead. Sipes remained in third and closed in on Walker on the tight turns, while Walker pulled away on the open stretches. Sipes finally got by Walker before the fourth lap. On the fifth lap, Saylor was riding comfortabiy in front, followed by Sipes, Walker and Boruff. On the final lap, Walker was held back in third by lapped riders, but he finally wiggled his way through to catch Sipes and move by to take over second. Sipes attempted to repass Walker, making for a photo finish, with Sipes edging out Walker by a wheel for second. Saylor earned the win, with Sipes sec~ ond, Walker third and Boruff fourth. Yamaha/Big Gun/Pro Action/Liquid Performance-backed Walker returned to contest the 250cc Pro class and was the first rider around turn one, followed by Sipes, Kevin Blalock and Nick Wolfe. Sipes challenged Walker for first early on the first lap. Saylor was up to third by the end of the first lap, while Boruff was near the rear of the pack. "I had a bad start, as I was shut out in the first corner, n said the Honda/Mota Planet sponsored-Boruff. ''I'm just riding, trying to have fun. This is the first time I have rode in three weeks after cracking some ribs. They are still somewhat tender today. n Sipes took the lead by lap two, but Walker recovered to regain the lead. Sipes pulled beside Walker, and as their battle continued, Saylor closed the distance to the pair. Sipes tried an outside line on the third lap to make a clean pass on Walker, while Saylor now rode on Walker's rear fender. Sipes stretched his lead by the fourth lap, with Walker still in second. Saylor, some distance back in third, began dropping off the pace with a rear fiat tire. Sipes secured the win, followed by Walker, Boruff and Saylor. "Kevin and I went back and forth: said the Team Green/Gateway Cycle/Suspension Plus MX Training/O'Neai/FMF-backed Sipes. "It was fun. He stalled in a corner, and that allowed me to pull away." Sipes snagged the holeshot in the second 250cc Pro moto, chased by Walker, Boruff, Saylor and Wolfe. Sipes went down on lap two, remounting in fourth. Walker moved into the lead. Boruff, now second, rocketed over a jump to take the lead from Walker. Then Walker spun into a hay bale and hit his chin, and Saylor took second. Sipes moved up to third, with Walker now fourth. Sipes stalled his bike, dropping once again to fourth, as Walker moved up one spot. Boruff held on for the win, with Saylor, Walker and Sipes following him across the line. "I'm just doing what I can today: said the 33-year-old Waiker. "I just wanted to get through the day. I'm riding better today than I thought I would." 80 D: I. Kaleb Gregory (Sw:); 2. Rayner Shines at Batavia MX By lARRY WOOSTER BATAVIA, NY, MAY 4 The Western New York Motocross Associa~ tion's fourth round at Batavia Motocross Park brought 450 riders out for Moose Racing Products Day Four. Sweet weather conditions and all the hard work by Jesse Milley's professional motocross~track design crew had the WNYMA 2001 and 2002 "Track of the Year" in mint shape and ready to jam. After some track tweaking this spring, the familiar 1O,OOO-galion tabletop jumps remain, as does the long, rhythmic whoop section off of turn one, while some new twists and turns were added on the back section. This outstanding facility is a prime example of what current motocross riders (such as Chris Moser, Milley, Les Draudt, Corey Kandefer and a posse of others) can accomplish when they join forces to promote the sport to another level. This is evident when riders come from as far away as Pennsylvania and Ohio, and even Canadians make the border crossing into WNYMA coun~ try to compete. The Genesee County track became the international destination point for motocross competition, even among the full starting gate of young 60cc sprocket jockeys. Crutchfield n e _ s Kawasaki Mounties, Tyler Rayner from Wilsonville, Canada, fired the first shot by bagging the holes hot. An orange wave of KTMs were in hot pursuit, with Billy Przysinda, Todd Thompson, Chaz Clingerman and Harrison Kay rounding out the early top five. The class quickly spread out, looking like KTMorange and Kawasaki~green Christmas lights winding around the track. Thompson chased down Przysinda and made his pass stick rip~ ping over a tabletop jump. Clingerman caught and then clung to Przysinda, using a mixture of moves, including utilizing the compressed, tight inside lines with random outside groove explosions, but he couldn't get past him for third. Rayner ran away with moto one, with Thompson, Przysinda and Clingerman his toughest competition. With new grooves evolVing and lines developing only to fade away between motos, the only thing certain about mota two was that it could be won by any number of the proven winners in this highcaliber encounter. Twenty 60cc competitors were primed and reloaded, sitting on the launching pad. and Rayner again was the quickest out of the gate. Thompson and Clingerman are notorious for their strong finishes in WNYMA competition, particularly in their second motos and under ever~changing track conditions. While they jockeyed for a glimpse of the leader, two new jockeys, Kawasaki commando Michael Monachino and KTM pilot Nathan Miller, entered the picture. Monachino and Miller were hooked up early but feeling the pressure from behind. Clingerman once again reeled in Thompson, and the duo battled fender to fender and bar to bar for several laps. Rayner was riding a rainbow over the jumps and could stay on the gas through the tough whoops section. The very large crowd kept one eye on the leader but couldn't help but get drawn into watching the bar~to~bar battle for second or the fender~rubbin' going on for the fourth posi~ tion on back. Rayner (1-1) made his Canadian invasion payoff by exporting WNYMA gold and first overall, over the ever-persistent Thompson (2-2). Clingerman's 4-3 efforts were rewarded with third overall. Przysinda (3-5) managed to hang on to fourth overall. Hard-charging Kay (5-7) claimed fifth overall, and Monachino (9-4) rebounded for sixth overall. This is one action~packed class that excels on any professionally designed track like Batavia Motocross Park. Another class that's growing in popularity is the WNYMA Four-Stroke class. Nigel Martin has ruled this class in 2003 over the first four weeks of competition, claiming three overall wins; only Billy Myers scored a victory over him, in the opening event at Frozen Ocean. Big Gun Exhaust Systems is awarding a new four~stroke exhaust system to some lucky Four-Stroke~c1ass competitor at the WNYMA Spring Series finale at Hunt Moto Park on June 8. This may have helped increase this class' rider count, but the level of competition has also drastically increased. Young mud- slingers such as Amateur standout rider Jesse Repass can see how he matches up against equally young Expert rider Mikey Silvarole; at the same time, Veteran riders such as Jeff Whaley can feel free to get in there and "mx" things up. This explosive concoction of young vs. old has shown benefits for young and old riders alike: The younger riders have been shadowing the cagey Veterans in hopes of learning new lines, while those same Veterans have been feeding off of the younger riders' energy. The WNYMA returns to Batavia Motocross Park nex.t on June 22 and again on July 13. Batavia MX will also host several Pro Days, with 3D-minute motos; the first will be heid on Saturday, June 7. Florida Motocross Series Round 4: Thundercross MX Park Maynard Mauls Thundercross 8y CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON OKEECHOBEE, FL, MAY 4 Coiten Maynard took to the course at Thundercross Motorsports Park and just mauled the competition at round four of the fifth annual Florida Motocross Series. The Suzuki rider didn't let the other riders have a chance in the 85cc (12-13) and Supermini (10-15) classes, winning all four motos. Maynard shot to the front at the start of each moto and never looked back. The track never looked better, and it was none other than Dean Dyess back at the helm, running things as smoothly as ever. Things needed to run right on this day, because the rider count hit another high for the series for the fourth week in a row, bringing in 338 entries. The day was sunny and hot, with tem~ peratures soaring to the low 90s.
