30 YEARS ABO••• JUliE 5, '973 A rider, apparently out of gas, uses a parachute to pull himself across the desert floor at the Greenhorn Enduro. The Pasadena MC put on the event, which was noted for poor marking, no clean-up crew, illegal checks, inaccurate mileages. and woefully incomplete pit-crew information. Besides that, it was a success ... Another 170 riders took on the Bad Rock Two-Day Trail in Weston, Oregon, with Dick Burleson (Hus) winning the 125cc class... Gunnady Mosseiev (KTM) went 1-3 for the overall win at the Yugoslav 250cc MX Grand Prix. American Jim Pomeroy (Bul) went DNF-5 for 10th overall... BJ Ydiando (Hus) won the DRA California City, Califomia, desert race over Bob Riley (Hus) and John Sands (Yarn) ... We tested the new Yamaha 360 MX and stated that if we were giving away a "motorcycle of the half-century award/ it would go to that machine. 20 YEARS ABO••• JUliE 8, '983 The 1983 Dual-Pur- pose 250s were grouped for the cover of Issue .21 in honor of the shootout inside. The shootout included the Honda XL250, Kawasaki KL250, Suzuki SP250 and Yamaha XT250, and we found that the Honda was the most powerful and the best handling, whiJe the Suzuki got the nod for being the most attractive with the best overall fit and finish... JlIIark Barnett (Suz) swept both motas at the Mount Morris MX National - the most impressive of which was the second malo, where he feD on the opening lap and charged through from last to win it. Bob Hannah (Han) won the 250cc class, while Danny Chlllldler (Han) topped the 500cc event... Mike Melton (Hus) squeezed by fellow ,Husqvama riders Frank Stacy and Larry Roeseler to win round five of the AMA/ISDE Qualifier Series in Rose City, Michigan. Melton scored 939 points, Stacy 940 and Roeseler 941. '0 YEARS ABO••• JUliE 2, '993 Robert Castledine clears a jump on his way to second in the 800cc class at the hillclimb series opener in Goshen, Indiana, on the cover of Issue #21. With the win, he clinched the championship. Ty Davis (Kaw) and Greg Zitterkopf (KTM) rounded out the podium overall, though Zitterkopf won the 250cc class. this page suggesting that it was high watch the Del Mar Mile and told me how much respect he had for the dirt track guys. How can you not respect a guy like that... time that the AMA factory road race teams seriously step up the effort to use two-way radio communication in order to make their riders aware of • And ditto for R.C., who came to the Daytona Short Track this year and said the same thing ... A little fodder for a Monday mornmg ... A while back, I wrote a column on unseen dangers on the racetrack. Miguel DuHamel uses one, and now it appears he's safer because of it. After Mat Mladin's rear tire failed, DuHamel's crew was able to tell him an important piece of information considering that Miguel was using the same tire. Now, after this weekend at Road Atlanta, it seems appropriate to pass a similar memo to the tire manufacturers. Hey guys, they're called inner-liners. NASCAR uses them to keep a tire from blowing away completely like Mat Mladin's did. Look into it... • I'll bet that you'd have to go back a long way to find the last time that someone in NHRA Pro Stock Bike racing recorded a National win by cutting as horrible a light as Shawn Gann did en route to victory at the NHRA Kf,N Filters SuperNationals in Englishtown, New Jersey. Gann's reaction time was a .126 basically slower than all of his other three elimination "holeshots" combined. Talk about winning fugly ... • Man, I'm gonna miss George Roeder. Not because the dirt track family prides itself on maintaining strong links to its past heroes, but because when I think about it, you would never have known that the guy was one of the best dirt trackers ever for how he conducted himself in the pits. I can't remember a nicer guy to be found anywhere ... • Memo to Anthony Gobert and Travis Pastrana: Maybe I need to have my ears checked, but all I'm hearing are excuses ... • I've got to be the biggest idiot around. My perfectly executed poll question of a week ago forgot to list Mike Hacker as a guy who could beat Chris Carr at the Springfield Mile. No wonder Scott Parker coming out of retirement was the number-one answer. .. • The respondents sure did underestimate Murphree, Russell and Johnson, though ... • I think that if we could just talk Ducati into parking the triple-nines and putting Hodgson and Xaus back on 998s, the World Superbike series would be a much more entertaining spec race ... • Memo to Carl Fogarty: When flames shoot out the exhaust, that's cool. When flames shoot out the exhaust and set the exhaust system on fire, the cool factor has definitely reached a point of diminishing returns ... McWaters has returned to that class ... • Roger Lee Hayden needs to be fined. Love ya, Rog, but you can't throw your bike on the track and then walk away from it like that... • Here's to hoping that Brian Livengood will soon be livin' good back at the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championships presented by ... • By the way, some people might not get it, but I can understand why Mat Mladin needs to hate people in order to beat them. One of my alltime moto-heroes, Bob Hannah, used to need to hate people to beat them. Bob Hannah, Mat Mladin, Domination - they just kind of sound alike ... • Memo to Rich Oliver: Now wait just a minute... • I'd rather be Jamie Hacking and know that I can crash my bike and still win the AMA Pro Honda Oils 600cc Supersport title than be Ben Spies and know that, as good as I am, I'm probably going to have to crash my bike trying to win the AMA Pro Honda Oils 600cc Supersport title ... • Come to think of it, where is the Honda effort in Supersport anyway? And I'm not talking about the oil sponsorship either. .. • If I'm Tony Rickardsson, I'm thinking that nobody can stop me. If I'm Tony Rickardsson's competition, I'm thinking that it could be a long, long speedway GP season ... National moto, would turn out to be the guy to end Carmichael's 250cc National moto win streak? Way to go, K-Dub... • I wonder how much validity there is to the rumor that Suzuki strongarmed the AMA into tearing down Tommy Hayden's Kawasaki, and could this have anything to with the fact that their technological partnership has so far only netted Suzuki the RM65? • And full props to Ryan Hughes, who I think is one of the most approachable guys in the pits at any motocross, for his 125cc win at Hangtown. Let me tell ya a little story about Ryno: I'll never forget the time that he came down to Del Mar to • And I still can't figure out how the divine acronym can justify making a green offense only cost $2000 and 20 points, while an orange and black offense costs four Grand National races. I thought cheatin' was cheatin' ... • How perfect is it that of all people, Kevin Windham, the guy who last beat Ricky Carmichael in a 250cc • Speaking of cheatin', I hear that AMA Hot Rod Cruiser rider Rick In lin upcoming 1ssIIe. lit Cyt:IB News • Hey, I just bought my tickets for Glen Helen 2005. Bad move, you say? Well, I doubt it... • Oh yeah, and I don't care what guys sitting around in their basement in their underwear, typing on http://www.ripped-off acronym/Ineed-a-woman.com think, sources close to me say that I'm in love with Desiree... • And Desiree should post only photos of Desiree... • Okay, so she can post pictures with Hopper and other people in them ... • But she had better make sure that she's in the photo too! eN High Point MX National Le Mans MotoGP Springfield AMA Dirt Track Polish World Speedway Opener Missouri National Enduro cue I e n _ _ S • MAY 28, 2003 111
