Spann got the holeshot in moto two, with Olson in his wake. This moto appeared to be a repeat of the first, this time with Jason Walling in third, pressuring Olson for second. Walling quickened his pace through the whoops and passed Olson on lap four as the top three headed into the final lap. Results 50: I. Casey Kirkland (KTM): 2. Sa.... y~r Abbott (KTM): 3. David Price, Ernie Dalrymple and Richard Miller II filled out the top five in the class. Price came all the way from Baltimore, Maryland, to ride his 800cc Triumph, and he took the win in the Pushrod class with a nice 4.2231-second ride - way ahead of Blain, who claimed second on his Harley in 5.361 seconds. Well, yes; it was freezing out therel Temperatures hovered in the 30s most of the evening. However, the moonlight was gleaming, and 150 riders took to the battlefield during round two of the Friday Night Series in rural Chilton, Wisconsin. Wausau native Jeremy Hackbarth took the early lead in the 125cc A class aboard his Kawasaki, but it didn't take long for fast man Matty Hopkins to cruise through the roller section and into the lead. Ken Masch had a slow start and was third, with Shaun Miller knocking on the door. Miller made his move into third and set his sights on Hackbarth, and he finally made the pass stick in the rollers for second. Meanwhile, Hopkins was extending his lead on his Lou Fowler's Pro Action-suspended Yamaha. Masch moved back into third by the third lap, but it too late for anyone to catch Hopkins, who took the win, with Miller second and Masch third. tu iO ~ By :I: LEN BREECH 0.. Gravity Park: Wisconsin fast man Mati Hopkins remains undefeated in the 13-24 and 125cc A classes after the first two rounds of the Gravity Park Friday Night Series in Chilton, Wisconsin. Masch, who just returned to racing after a few years off due to injury, came out with a much-needed holeshot in the second mota. Masch had his KTM screaming through the rocker section. Miller had his Kawasaki ripping through the gears, behind Masch. Hopkins had an uncharacteristic third-place start. Miller pulled alongside Masch for a while, but Masch quadrupied through the pit section, pulling out to a three-bikelength lead. Hopkins went around Miller past the finish line as Miller stumbled around the barrel. Hopkins and his thumper were right on Masch's orange fender as they headed over the infield double, but Masch seemed to get away for a second. Masch attacked the next corner high, but Hopkins went to the inside for the lead. It didn't last long, though, as Masch braked hard and cut back down to the inside, retaking the lead. A lap later, Hopkins stayed low over the spectator jump to move past Masch on the inside. and MlIIer also took advantage of the position to get around Masch, who had a hard time through the flat, slippery comer after the finish line, losing some valuable ground to Miller for second. Hopkins cruised away with the second-moto win. Miller held on to second and second overall. Masch settled for third overall with a valiant effort in the second moto, "The first moto wasn't that hard," Hopkins said, "but the second mota was pretty tough early on. It took me a while to get around Kenny; he's got a lot of experience on the track ~ a little bit of 'old school' out there tonight. I finally got around him over the spec~ tator jump. I didn't get great starts tonight. I came in on him in that corner, and I was going to shut him off, but he knew I would do that, so he cut back to the inside - but I did finally get him for the lead: PNI: I. C.J. Greaves: 2. Results Iron Horsemen Hillclimb: "Fast Andy" Fortner won the 600cc class and the Fast Time of Trail-Way Speedway ::; w w Results By Boo NORTHROP GOSHEN, IN, APR. 27 "Fast Andy" Fortner started the 2003 hillclimb season the same way he finished in 2002: fast! Fortner claimed nine Fast Time Awards in 2002 and took his first of 2003 at his first opportunity. Riding his CR500, the Pittsboro, Indiana, native son flew over the top of the Goshen Iron Horsemen's hill in a sizzling 3.7613 seconds on his second ride in the 600cc class to take the class win and the Fast Time of the Day award. He had to come from behind for the win, as Adam Doubblestein had posted a 3.9228-second first-round ride - just L4 ten-thousandths of a second faster th·an Fortner's 3.9242 - to take the lead into intermission. In second-round action. Doubblestein nearly caught Fortner again on his KX540, blaZing over the top in 3.7814 seconds for second place. That's good racing, folks! Jon Creek was also quick, posting a 3.8382-secand run on his Honda for third. Tom Brown and Aaron Morehouse ran fourth and fifth. Dan Baldwin from Lawton, Michigan, also broke into the threes on his 750cc Kawasaki triple, flying over the top in 3.9771 seconds to barely edge Fortner and his triple in the 750cc class. Fortner topped the hill in four seconds flat, giving Baidwin the win by 229 ten-thousandths of a second, spoiling a perfect day for Fortner. Jim Schafer took third on his 650cc Honda. .----::--------------,w ::; 65: 1. Matt Opperman: 2. Chase Nystrom: 3. Brian Ludwig; 4. Hunter Nystrom; 5. Ben Peterson. 85 JR: J. Trllvls Frassetto; 2. In the Brakeless final, Richtmeyer, riding it like a new 450. lapped the field by the sixth lap on his Bill Wolf-sponsored Triumph. Mark Fillebrown stayed in second, while Royal Enfield rider Bruce Argetsinger got in a laterace battle with Ed Kowalski, on his WL Harley, for third; the nod went to Argetsinger. In the 750cc Sportsman, Richtmeyer started third, but by the end of the opening lap, he was in front of Lew Woods and Barney Wal~ dron. The top three stayed very close, but Richtmeyer was in control. The others got another shot at Richtmeyer when Michael Headman and Bill Allen tried to occupy the same spot entering the first turn on the fifth lap. There were no changes among the top three off the restart. The name Weiss also appeared twice in the winners' column, but this time it was one for the 01' man, Larry, and one for the "kid," Adam, whose number reflected the number of years he's been away: 18. Larry put his Vintage Bob/Pat Orman Honda in front of Steve Bromley, Waldron and Nick Taylor at the start of the Sportsman 600cc final. Waldron got by Bromley on the third lap. Then Bromley got into a battle for third with Taylor. Bromley's Suzuki appeared to seize as they started the last lap, giving Taylor third, but Bromley managed to bump-start it and still finish fourth. The '70s Singles class is always the largest, since those bikes were the most recently manufactured. Larry put his Honda in front, but Adam put the Larry's Service Center Yamaha that his father ran in previous years in front by the end of the opening lap and stayed in front until the end. Larry again took the lead at the start of the Over 50 Senior final, trailed by Mike Keane, Melvin Brown and Robert Miller. Keane took the lead as they entered the third turn on the opening lap and held on to it to the end. Since he easily won the Sportsman 250cc heat, Bromley figured he'd do the same in the finai, and at first it looked like he would. He led Donnie Warf and Ken Weiss for the first half of the race. But Warf put his DMR Ossa into first on the fourth lap. Bromley tried to retake the lead, but he was forced to do so on the outside. For the last three laps, they ran virtually side by side, with Warf taking the win by a foot. Brown easily topped Robert Gerberich for the Super Senior Over 60 win. Results BRAKELESS: 1. Calhoun Supercross Seals Twists Those Wrists (in a good way) By FAT B,LLY CALHOUN, GA, MAY 3 On Saturday night, Calhoun was at it again, hosting the seventh round of the Moto-Madness Series. Rain earlier in the week left the track crew with a bunch of work to finish before the motos could start. Constant touching up of the course was needed all evening, and the crew came through with flying colors. KTM-mounted Nic Kimsey dominated the 60cc (7-9) event hands down.
