in second to Chisholm in the second 125cc B
Mod moto, and he made a bunch of mistakes
in his other races. Evennou will be a threat in
Tennessee. but he left High Point without a
first· place trophy.
The other dominant force at High Point
was Suzuki's future star Dominic "Nicco" Izzi,
who jumped out to early leads and big wins on
his Suzuki RMs in the 85cc (12·13) Stock and
Modified class and in the 105cc Supermini
class. The only thing that could stop young
Izzi was a trip to the big-bike class, where
he finished fifth in the 125cc Stock (12-15)
group.
With a pile of wins for the weekend,
Chisholm and Izzi are expected to be names to
watch for at Loretta Lynn's this August, but a
whole host of riders will compete for the same
honor throughout the next few months. High
Point is just the start of the three-tiered qualifying process for the National event.
Saturday afternoon was bright and sunny
at High Point, the same track that hosts the
third round of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S.
National Motocross Series each May. Rain on
Saturday night led to mud on Sunday morning, but by the time the motos kicked off, the
soil started drying, and the rugged terrain that
was left was challenging for all.
Another highlight of the weekend was the
125cc A/Pro Sport race on Sunday, which
featured a fantastic battle in the muddy first
moto between Pennsylvania's own Amateur
prospect "Mene" Gene Stull, his fellow Pennsylvanian Sammy Holland, and Ohio's Mall
Bames. Holland spent the early laps out front,
but Stull kept the pressure on. A brief run off
the track by Stull allowed Bames to make it a
three-way battle for the lead, and then it was
Holland's turn to bobble in the mud and let
Stull take the point position. Stull would not be
headed again, but Holland and Bames battled
to the finish before Bames pulled off the runner-up finish.
Holland showed a renewed focus in a dryer
moto two, however, and he rode an error-free
race to top Barnes for the moto and overall
win. Stull suffered a bad start and a crash and
ended up 13th.
In 250cc A Pro Sport action, Stull
answered back with two big moto wins, Aaron
Dieter claimed second, and Holland was third.

CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Series
Round 4: Albany Motorsports Park
Sannan,
Back in a Big Way!
By Cu.y LJGHT
ALBANY, OR, MAY 3·4
Mer being grounded by an injury the majority
of the past five months and surviving a scary
medical ordeal, 16·year·old Pete Sannan
showed the competition that he hadn't lost
any speed while recovering, as was evident by
his performances at Albany Motorsports Park.
At round four of the CMC Northwest Spring/
Summer Motocross Series, the KTM-mounted
Sannan snared a trio of overall wins during the
two consecutive days of racing.
Sannan was at the top of his game when a
crash while preparing for the opening round of
the Golden State Nationals back in January
thwarted what was hoped to be a spectacular
year for the rider from Albany, Oregon. While
examining Sannan for broken bones, doctors
discovered a medical problem that required
surgery and may possibly have saved the
teenager's life. His parents, Bob and Jill,
weren't sure if Pete would ever ride again,
although Pete knew differently and rebounded
quickly.
On the first of the two days of racing,
Sannan made his comeback bid by contesting
a single class, just to make sure he was ready.
On Saturday, Sannan topped the I 25cc Inter·
mediate class, and on Sunday he added the
Before The HiII·c1ass laurels to a sweep of the
weekend in the J 25cc class. Not only was
Sannan successful, he also beat several
seasoned Professional riders in taking his
125cc wins.
Yamaha-mounted Travis McClinton has
stepped up his performances throughout the
series, and on Saturday he won the 80cc
(12· J 3) and Supermini classes. Travis is part
of a three-rider racing family that also includes
his currently injured brothers Aaron and Tyler.
McClinton got the holeshot in both Supermini
motos and remained in the lead throughout
both contests to win via a 1-1 tally. Tyler
Schwentker (4·2), Phillip Springer (3·4),
Doug Crockett (5·3) and Tanner Mitchell
(6·5) rounded out the top five in the competi·
tive class.
Another of the double-class winners at
Albany was Ryan Thompson. Like Sannan,
Thompson has been spectacular in the Intermediate ranks. The rider from Bandon, Oregon, has not only won his class in each of the
series' rounds he's contested thus far, he has
also handily topped the combined Professional
riders, While Thompson was only on hand for
Saturday's event. he did leave his mark, holding off top Northwest Pros Ben Morgan and
Dale Ainslie. both from Washington.
Ainslie. a rookie Pro from Longview,
Washington, was a three-class contestant on
the day. While he did win two classes· the
125cc and Open Pro events· the day didn't
quite progress the way the Yamaha rider
might have hoped it would. Ainslie breezed to
J -I wins in the 125cc Pro class early on in the
day, but his luck soured in the 250cc
Pro/Intermediate class, as Thompson was too
much for the competition and won both motos
to continue his stranglehold on the class. Morgan and Ainslie trailed Thompson at the finish
of motos one and two, respectively, but Mor·
gan took advantage of a spill on Ainslie's part
to win the Professional class overall, trailing
Intermediate rider Thompson. Jesse Allen
thumped to 2-2 finishes in the Intermediate
portion, followed by Garrett Melton (3-3) and
Jeremy Mclain.
Sannan was also faced with tough competition on Sunday, most notably Idaho's
Leighton Ullie. The second-year AMA 250cc
National rider was the day's lone Professional
and handily topped moto one in the combined
250cc Pro/Intermediate/Junior and 125cc
Intermediate classes. San nan got a bit of a
break in moto two when Lillie fell, and both he
and Garret Melton swept past the downed
rider. Lillie shook off the dust and forged forward through the field to eventually trail Sannan at moto's end. Melton was the top· placing
250cc Intermediate rider, while Zach Melton
topped the 250cc Junior field, followed by
Brad Batchelor and KTM rider Jason Smith.
YZ pilot Danny Gubser, who didn't compete on Saturday, was the cream of the crop
in the 80cc ranks on Sunday, duplicating
McClinton's mark from the previous day by
winning the 80cc (12·13) and Supermini
classes, beating Derrick May for his 80cc
(12·13) win, and heading Springer in the
Supermini class.
