Texas State C'ship Enduro Circuit, High Plains Division Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit Rounds 5/4: Kachina Enduro Pepper Parks the Rest By BILL KAMIN ESPANOLA, NM, APR. 27 Kelby Pepper buried a field of experienced winners in Espanola with a final score of 29.1139, while second-place finisher Michael Wilson charged in with a very respectable 41.1595. Pepper seems to have found all the straight lines through the New Mexico Trail Riders' challenging 96.S-mile course on his Apex Sports of Colorado Sprin9s-sponsored Yamaha YZ250. "Mike Stokes at Apex does a great job taking care of all my racing needs," said Pepper. "A lot of the events don't really physically challenge the A riders, but this was definitely a very physical enduro. I've always done well at the more physical events. The mileage, the check placements, the variety and the course markings were all great." The majority of the roughly 250 riders concurred in their appreciation of the demanding course. "Ken Giles and Joseph Gutierrez did an outstanding job" was the sentiment echoed by dozens of contestants, even as they struggled to regain enough strength to roll their bikes back into their trailers. The course began with some relatively easy singletrack through the mesquite, with a few short sections of sand wash; most had no problem maintaining the 14-mph average for the first six miles. The speed changed up to 18 mph, and most riders were able to card a zero at the first check. After two more miles, the speed changed down to 15, and a maliciously placed check at the 13.90-mile marker burned dozens of riders. While the next section challenged most riders even at 18 mph, a few of the most skilled stayed hot. Miles of the infamous Kachina ridge line trails showed up here, alternated with longer sections of sand washes. The speed changed up to 21 mph at around 21 miles, with points lost by most riders at the known 30.30 mark. The 20-minute rest at gas allowed for riders to take a deep breath, get a cold drink, and do a bit of wrenching. The next section began with some of the same trail as the first, yet with a variety that added to the challenge. The first check-in was well hidden in a very narrow wash, though most riders were beginning to pick up the o YES!
