Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Qualifier MX West Spring Series Final Round: Honey Lake Motocross Park They SWarmed t Honey ~ak Bv Jimmy Nelson topped both the 125cc A Southwest and 125cc A Pro-$port Southwest classes at the Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Qualifier in Milford, California. CASHEL HACKLANO PHOTOS BV TIM NOBLES/MoTOSHOTS.COM MILFORD, CA, MAY 3-4 he official opening of this track's 2003 season put the Honey Lake crew to the test! By noon Friday, the pits were filled with almost 300 rid' ers, and they kept rolling in all weekend. With 1018 entrants, this event supercedes any event hosted by Honey Lake since its opening in 2001. Although there's always been a high caliber of riders at this track, this past weekend drew talent from all over California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Utah and Hawaii. The Pro classes also had large turnouts. The majority of these riders are followers of the Chevy Trucks Outdoor National Series or the AMA Four-Stroke National Series, and this made for an awesome "mini national." Sean Collier, who has a couple of championships under his belt, contributed to the quality of racing. Yamaha/Mach l/Fly/Spy/lndependent's Eric Nye, the 2002 Loretta Lynn's National 250cc Intermediate Champion, proved that hard work and dedication can bring an incredible improvement in speed and flawless style. In the first 125cc Pro moto on Sunday, Nye's lightning-quick reaction got him around the first turn to claim the holeshot, just ahead of Yamaha/ FMF/Oakley/DVS/Thousand Oaks' Jimmy Nelson from Battle Mountain, Nevada, and Varner Motors/Axo/ Scott/Michael's of Reno/MCW's Nathan Tiearney from Carson City, Nevada. Right from the double-jump section after the first turn, the race was on! Nye was hanging on with every ounce of his being, while Nelson and Tiearney battled for second. The three riders merged heading into clubhouse corner, and Tiearney wisely chose an inside line, edging forward. Nelson put into effect his aggressive, attack-mode style, but he was kept at bay until the fourth lap, when Tiearney came into a corner and Nelson bumped the Suzuki rider, causing Tiearney to lose momentum and go down. Nelson claimed the lead and surged forward; Tiearney's recovery was quick, and before the moto was over, he had made up enough positions to finish third. At the front of the race, Nye had stepped it up and was challenging Nelson; the two stayed barely half a bikelength apart, switching places in first and second for the remainder. Nye crossed the finish line first, taking the win, over Nelson. Ty Siminoe was among the young racers who took to the line for the 50cc (7-8) Stock contest. As the 10-second board went up, all 10 riders were rearing to go; the gate dropped, and Jesse Nelson blasted off the gate, leaving little doubt that these guys are fast! Before the first turn onto the Pee Wee track, Brian Sjogren had claimed the holes hot, taking Nelson by surprise. Sjogren, fresh off the World Mini circuit, surged forward in an awesome display of riding. With a few seconds on Nelson, Sjogren was making this look easy. Recovering from losing the holeshot, Nelson set his sights on the leader and was building speed with each turn or jump. On lap three, Nelson "politely" came up on Sjogren's blind side and passed him on the outside. Frustrated, Sjogren lost his concentration and couldn't make the pass back on Nelson, but he finished an admirable second. Siminoe, who was in backto-back motos for the majority of the day, put in an awesome effort and showed the So Cal folks just how talented northern Nevada riders are! Having had just enough time to take the win in the previous moto, Siminoe simply fell into line in this moto, and when fatigue set in, he lost third place to Daniel Paluzzi. "I like the new things that Larry [Wosickj put on the track," Siminoe said about the changes to the track for the 2003 season. "It's almost like riding on the big track, but not, and it is easy for me to win with the new jumps." A rookie to the Honey Lake track, Prince Kapahulehua, who hails from Hawaii, mixed it up with some of the fastest kids on the West Coast. Always a competitive class, the 85cc (12-13) contest for the Loretta Lynn's Qualifier saw Kapahulehua abscond with the holeshot, and a single look back gave him the okay; he charged forward and immediately dominated the race. Not to be outdone, Casey Logan was making Kapahulehua work for that front position. Meanwhile, B.J. Bohrer was silently stalking Logan, waiting for an opening which he found, as Logan was concentrating on Kapahulehua and fumbled in a corner at the base of the scoring tower, creating the opening that Bohrer needed. Moving up to second, he spent the remainder of the moto trying to do the same to the Hawaiian rider, but Kapahulehua's lead was too great, and Bohrer couldn't catch him in time to take the checkered flag. eN HDney Lake Mota.ross Parle MiHDn!, CalifDmia Results: May 3-4, 2003 IFinal Round] 50 (7-S) STK NW: 1.
