Central Oregon Motocross Series CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Series Rounds 3/5: Madras Motocross few riders to lead Costa all weekend long, overtaking Costa late in the second 250cc Intermediate/Junior moto to post the 250cc Junior win aboard his Honda CRF450. Costa won the Intermediate portion, followed by Brandon Kentner and the second-placed Junior rider, Ken Romero. CN (Left) Landon Currier was among the contingent of out-ofstaters at Madras Motocross, netting a trio of overall wins on each of the two days of racing in the 60cc Open, 60cc Senior and 80cc (9-11) classes. (Below) Washington's Michael Schmeck was the dominant performer in the Supermini and 80cc (12-13) classes at round three of the Central Oregon Motocross Series. STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT MADRAS, OR, MAY 10-11 ashingtonians Landon Currier and Michael Schmeck were the cream of the crop at round three of the Central Oregon Motocross Series, which doubled as the fifth round of the CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Series, held at Madras Motocross. While the event drew riders from all over the Northwest, it was Currier who scored six overall wins on the weekend. The KTM and Yamaha rider from Brush Prairie, Washington, amassed wins in the 60cc Senior (9-11), 60cc Open and aocc (9-11) classes on each of the two days of racing on the high desert, while the Suzuki-mounted Schmeck was the dominant performer in the aocc (12-13) and Supermini classes. Schmeck, though, did have plenty of tough competition, as Currier and a pair of local Suzuki-mounted brothers from nearby Culver, Oregon, Ben and Blake Anglen, made things tough for the rider from Yakima, Washington. However, Schmeck prevailed in four classes overall, although he did suffer a single moto loss to the elder of the two Anglen brothers, Ben, in the first Supermini moto on Saturday. After such an impressive performance, though, Ben crashed in the second moto and suffered a broken leg, going 1-12 in the process. Schmeck garnered the overall win via 2-1 placings, while Blake (3-2) nabbed second overall after two consistent rides. Tyler Schwentker (6-3), Chad Turner (5-4) and Cody Hockema (7-5) rounded out the top five overall. Possibly one of the best races of the weekend came in the second aocc Age Group moto on Saturday. Ben grabbed the lead at the start of W the moto and had his brother Blake, Schmeck and Currier all nipping at his rear wheel. The Anglen brothers traded leads for many laps before Ben controlled the tempo. With just a bit more than one lap remaining, Schmeck slipped past Blake and then Ben to take the lead. Then things got worse for the Anglens when they tangled and both went down. This allowed Currier to settle into second, followed by Blake. Schmeck aced the aocc (12-13) class, while secondplaced Currier posted a aocc (9- 11) class win. Currier went unchallenged for a pair of 60cc wins on Saturday, putting huge ground on the competition. Currier gapped the competition by as much as 14 seconds in his 60cc Open-class win, beating fellow KTM rider Kyle Ulrich and Kawasakimounted Julian Doane. Currier did similar damage in the 60cc Age Group motos, again leading Ulrich and Doane into the top three. On Sunday, it was much the same for Currier, although this time the ll-year-old ran up front in the first aocc Age Group moto. Things were looking good for Currier until, with just one lap left, the Yamaha rider crashed, and Schmeck took it from there to post a win. Currier, who at Las Vegas was a six-moto winner, recovered to finish second, which was good for the aocc (9-11) win. Schmeck won moto two to cap off his first of two overall wins on the day, again followed by Currier, the aocc (9-11) overall winner. Blake placed second to Schmeck in the aocc (12- 13) class. Yamaha rider Nathan Whitlow had a good weekend, posting a sweep of the Before The Hill and 125cc Junior classes on Saturday; however, his only win on Sunday came in the Before The Hill Junior class, as Yamaha rider Travis Farmer hammered the competition in the 125cc Junior class, which Whitlow didn't contest. Suzuki rider Erik Meusling placed second overall, while Wes Baughman and a surprisingly fast Nikki Harris battled for third overall. Harris, a top WML National rider, battled quite well with the guys and finished fourth overall with a 5-4 score. Yamaha YZ450F-mounted Danny Costa also had a great weekend, scoring overall wins in the competitive Four-Stroke class on both days, and also won the 250cc Intermediate class on Sunday. Another fast local rider, Ross Miller, trailed Costa in both Four-Stroke motos on Sunday.
