AHRMA Speed & Sport National MX Championship Series Round 5: Honey Lake Motocross Park No One Slicker Than Mcintosh By Chad Mcintosh topped the Premier 500cc Expert class on his 1960 Matchless at round rIVe of the AHRMA Speed & Sport National MX C'ship Series. MIKE VANCil PHOTOS BY TIM NOBlES/ MOTOSHOTS PHOTOGRAPHY MILFORD, CA, APR. 26 n a day of spectacular surprises and marvelous racing, Chad Mcintosh kept focused in his three classes and walked away with the lion's share of the awards. Mcintosh used Matchless and Triumph British iron to compete in six motos on an extremely beautiful, exciting and demanding motocross facility. The unofficial "Ironman Award" would have to go to Mcintosh, who raced to four firsts and two seconds. The first surprise was the overnight snowfall that laid a fluffy but very wet blanket over the entire eastern slope of the Plumas National Forest, which is the backdrop for Honey Lake. Though there was concern among those racers who rose early, the snow melted away before the first practice session. The Honey Lake course is very forgiving, with wide, well-designed corners, and it's kept in pristine condition by an experienced track-maintenance crew throughout the day. The day's layout was the shorter course, which is still nearly a mile per lap, and there is an elevation change of approximately 450 feet from the start gate to the turnoff to the shortened Vintage layout. For modern bikes, the elevation change is about 500 feet. The most important event for Mcintosh was the Premier 500cc Expert class, in which he had to contend with five equally eager and qualified experts. In moto one, Mcintosh rocketed off the start line to lead the field O 52 MAY 28. 2003· cue • .. The day's hard racing produced only smiles and good feelings, and the ambulance didn't move the entire day. All spills were minor get-offs, and the racers are eager for the next opportunity to race on this wellengineered motocross facility. eN Honey Lake MX Park Milford, California Results: April Z&, Z003 [Round 51 up the hill aboard his 1960 Matchless single. Right on his rear wheel at the second corner prior to charging up the hill was Kelly Shane, on his 1955 Ariel, who was getting pressure from Larry Legarra, on a 1958 Ariel. By the end of lap one, Legarra was challenging Mcintosh for the lead. Another hard charger, Robert Poole, got by Shane for third on his BSA Goldstar. By lap four, Poole had moved to second. Shane came back stronger to reclaim third from Legarra, and when Legarra fell prey to problems, Cycle News' Terry Pratt jumped on the opportunity to take over fourth. At the checkered flag, it was Mcintosh taking his first of four wins on the day, approximately 150 yards ahead of runner-up Poole. Third went to Shane and fourth to Pratt. The second-moto holeshot went to Shane. Mcintosh was a few feet back. Poole was also very close. Before the first lap was complete, Mcintosh powered by Shane and started his second great getaway of the day. Poole was still in third, and Legarra was running strong in fourth. Pratt was back in fifth. By the end of lap two, Poole moved past Shane, and Pratt had moved past Legarra. At the end of the final lap, Mcintosh again had a huge lead on the second-placed rider, Poole, who was just slightly ahead of Pratt. n eVIls The double-moto wins gave Mcintosh his undisputed class win. Poole (2-2) was second overall. Pratt was third overall. Another rider who was a strong contender for "Ironman" status was Poole, who also finished six motos on the day; his Herculean efforts garnered two firsts, a second, a fourth, a sixth and a seventh in his three classes. Even before practice began, there was another surprise for the assembled competitors and fans. A new award was created this year and was presented at the riders' meeting. During tech inspection, the AHRMA officials were taking notes in addition to their normal inspection duties, and the first recipient of the AMS Racing "One Cool Bike" award was George Vadney's James Holland 1960 Matchless. Vadney's entry in the Premier 500cc Intermediate class garnered him two fourth-place finishes. Ducati jockey Rich Dominguez won the class, while Ron Predmore, on a 1964 Matchless, was second, and Dennis Moore, on a 1957 BSA, garnered third. In the Sportsman 125cc Expert class, Ryan Bast and Steve Gibson went to war on Honda Elsinores. Both riders were extremely fast, and they swapped the lead a couple of times, but Bast seemed to have the upper hand and led across the line at the end of each lap. The three riders in the Expert class were trailed by the second-wave Sportsman 125cc Novices and Intermediates. Scott Lawson, on another Elsinore, was left behind by midmoto both times.
