STORV AND PHOTOS BV GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,APR.27 T IT)C.ffi{)lt· S,r1 .l. _. rent Pugmire and Daryl Ecklund both opened up the 26th annual California Racing Club J.B. Memorial Dunestown Series with doubleclass wins. Pugmire dominated both the 85cc (12-13) and Supermini classes at Los Angeles County Raceway during the Riders Choice Performance-sponsored event, while Ecklund put in some impressive rides to top the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate ranks. The opening 85cc (12-13) moto's holeshot belonged to Taylor Kellstrom, but within a lap Pugmire was out front and pulling away. While Pugmire performed his disappearing act, Tanner Langham, Jake Canada and Kellstrom settled into a moto-Iong battle over second place that would ultimately end up in Langham's favor, with Canada a close third. Canada put his KX85 out front early in moto two, while Pugmire quickly sliced his way up from a fifth-place start to run out front by lap two. Canada would have to be content with 3-2 finishes for second overall, behind Pugmire. Langham used 2-5 finishes to just edge out the 5-3 tally of Nick Sanchez and the 4-4 score of Kellstrom for third overall. Pugmire, Canada and Kellstrom all returned to do battle in the Superminis. Pugmire went wire to wire in both motos aboard his Simi Kawasaki/Pax Racing/Smith/FMF-sponsored KX for a pair of convincing victories, while his Team Green teammate Canada was runner-up both times out, just staying out of the reach of Kellstrom. Tyler Sjoberg (4-4) and Armando Aguilar (5-5) rounded out the top five. Ecklund started his day off with a most impressive win in the 125cc Intermediate class. Not only did Ecklund simply outrun the rest of the Intermediates, he topped the entire 125cc Pro class that started in the same gate. Donnie Weber finished in second after holding off a determined Justin Eide for the second half of the mota. Derreck Murphy claimed fourth, ahead of Anthony Barbacovi and Ricky Parks. Darin Chisholm absconded with the holeshot in moto two, with Barbacovi and Randall Williams all over his back fender. Eide and Ecklund made their way to the front to challenge Barbacovi for the lead, and Ecklund got the job done on lap three. Ecklund took the win with a few seconds 56 n MAV 2 t , 2003' eye • .. ,'y. Weber's 2-4 tally topped Barbacovi's 5-3 finishes for third. Things were a little bit tougher for Ecklund in the opening 250cc Intermediate contest, as CRF450R-mounted Eide escaped with the holeshot and wasn't about to give anything up to Ecklund. The two front-runners were all over each other until they tangled in a turn and went down. Ecklund was quickly up and under way, and he won the mota over Weber, Bobby Steffan and Joshua Coffey; Eide crossed the line a disappointing seventh. Ecklund and Eide went at it over the lead in mota two for a couple of laps before a bobble dropped Eide out of contention. Ecklund motored away on his Chaparral/Thor/Tom Morgan Racing-sponsored CR250 for his second class win of the day. Weber overcame a midpack start to go 2-2, and Steffan followed him up through traffic for a pair of thirds. KTM's Kurt Caselli led the first 250cc Pro moto up until the penultimate lap, when a fall dropped him to an eventual fourth-place finish. Tim Weigand benefited from Caselli's miscue to win the moto, over Mike Meadows and Shane Smith. Caselli was again quickest off the line in moto two and was soon being hounded by Smith, while Meadows and Weigand argued over third, just a few seconds back. The heated battle came down to the last lap, with the top three - Caselli, Smith and Weigand - skirmishing over the top spot. Caselli held off Weigand at the checkers by a bikelength. Weigand's 1-2 tally took home the first-place payback, over Caselli (4-1) and Smith (3-3). Meadows (2-4) and Donnie Durrer (5-5) rounded out the top five. _ Los Allllllin CouAty ""enny PII',,"'", Colifamia Resuhs:lpriIZ7,ZD031RDundlJ P/W YAM BEG: 1. Denver Silverleke (Yam): 2.
