Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series Final Round: Woodland Motocross Park ILeft) Joe Casey topped the 250cc Expert battle at Woodland Motocross Part<, though second-place finisher Randy Brown captured the season high-point honors. IBelow) Monty Price dominated the Four-5troke Evolution Expert class and placed third overall, behind Kurt Stevens and Joe Brockway, in the competitive Open Evolution Expert class 8t the final round of the Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT WOODLAND, WA, APR. 26 amaha-mounted Joe Brockway had things going his way at the ninth and final round of the Vintage Dirt-sanctioned Northwest Vintage f, Evolution Motocross Series, held at Woodland Motocross Park. The rookie AMA Professional rider from Oregon won three of four motos contested at the championship round. Brockway won the Under 40 Evolution Expert class with a 1-1 sweep, beating fellow Expert riders Christopher James and Jonathan Stuart to garner the overall win in that class. Brockway also won one of the two Open Evolution Expert-class motos, although it was fellow Oregonian Kurt Stevens who netted the overall win in that class after beating Brockway and Washington's Monty Price in moto two. Stevens' win clinched the class title for the second consecutive year. Brockway (1-2), Price (3-3), Blake Landon (5-5) and James (4-6) filled out the top five overall. James Conway also had a successful day and, like Brockway, ended it with a win and a secondplace finish. Conway aced both Under 40 Intermediate motos and then trailed fellow Maico rider Marvin Newton in the Open Evolution Intermediate class. Newton and Honda rider Christopher Del Aire split moto wins in the Open Evolution Intermediate class, with Newton winning overall with a 2- 1 tally after Del Aire scored a DNF in moto two. Honda riders Joe Casey and Randy Brown were the only contestants in the 250cc Vintage Expert class. Though Casey won overall, Brown won the series title. Kawasaki rider John Trudeau. one of the youngest riders to compete at this event, was the dominant performer in Y 54 MAV21.2003· cue I e the adjoined Intermediate portion. Trudeau, who last year dominated the 250cc Amateur class, won both motos and, by indication of his performances on this day, may be making the jump to the Expert class (although at this point it is uncertain). CZ jockey Mark Mittman (2-3) finished second overall to Trudeau, ahead of Mark Sullivan (5-2), Travis Anderberg (3-4) and the top Intermediate rider in the series, Lorin Smith. It's possible that the rider who has left the biggest mark on Vintage racing this season is former AMA National TT and road-race star Randy Skiver. While not in attendance on this day, Skiver did pick up a trio of overall class championships, winning the Pre-1970, Four-Stroke and Over 50 Expert classes, amassing an incredible 23 overall wins (riding three classes) at each of the eight rounds he contested. Skiver failed only once to win overall. mired by a DNF at the penultimate round of the series. Bultaco rider Rick Downing and CZ pilot Mark Baer took advantage of Skiver's absence in the Pre-1970 class to get a rare opportunity to hold the point positions in the class. which has been dominated by one rider Skiver - for the first eight rounds. Downing and Baer each scored a moto win, with Baer winning moto one aboard his 1970 CZ360. Downing and his 1969 Bultaco were too much for the competition in moto two, and the Seattle rider won overall. Triumph rider Dean Newton thumped to third overall via 3-3 placings. ahead of Canada's Nick Caldwell. Monty Price prevailed in the season-long war for the top honors in the Four-Stroke Evolution Expert class. breaking a tie in the points with fellow Yamaha rider Landon. By virtue of his nevvs better finish overall at the championship round, Price (who, along with his wife, Ann, has promoted the series for nearly a decade) topped Landon (who, along with his wife. will promote next year's series). Price (1-1), Landon (2-2) and Jay Lael (who, interestingly, was piloting an exotic mid·1970s BMW) rounded out the top three on the day. "This sure turned out to be a great day," Landon said. "Monty and I were working on the track the Thursday before the event, and the whole course was pretty much flooded from the heavy rain. It looked like there was no way we'd be able to reroute the course, but we got a break in the weather, and it turned out really good after all." CN d Matecnss P8rtl d.W.IIi....
