California State Championship Qualifier Loretta Lynn's Qualifier Glen Helen Raceway Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, APR. 6 awasaki jockeys Richie Owens and Jeff Emig shared top honors as Glen Helen Raceway played host to a rare doubleheader, brought about by heavy rains several weeks earlier, when the second day of the Southern California round of the Loretta Lynn's Qualifiers had been washed out. This was slated to be the "rain date" to make up that event, and it coincided with the planned running of the California State Championships qualifier. Emig made an appearance and showed he still has a flair for the dramatic, as he fought from behind in the first 250cc/Open A moto to steal the victory from Honda rider Tim Weigand on the last lap. Then he set the throttle on "cruise" in the second race and coasted home the overall ace behind Owens, who only tallied a disappointing fourth in the first moto. In both events, Sean O'Connor had gotten the holeshot, only to be pounded back to fourth overall as Daton Beavers moved his Suzuki to third place in each stanza. Owens went head to head against Beavers in the J25cc A clash, each taking turns at finishing first and second, with Owens prevailing with the decisive second-moto triumph. Third place went to Steven Haughelstine, who earlier had won both classes on the rain-drenched Saturday program. Top Intermediate performances were turned in by Yamaha jockeys Micky Griffin and Jared Minor. Griffin won Sunday's 250cc Band J25cc B Modified classes, and Minor aced the J25cc B Stock class while finishing runner-up to Griffin's two wins. Trent Pugmire was the top qualifier in two classes in both Loretta Lynn's K and California State events. He aced both the 85cc Stock (J2-J3) and 85cc Modified (J 2- 13) classes for LL racers and added to his victory tally the 85cc (J2- J3) and 85cc Supermini wins in State competition. Another top competitor was Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto, who topped the Loretta Lynn's 85cc Modified (J4-J5) and J05cc Supermini (J2-J5) classes. Ricky James rode with an injured left hand but still managed to be top State qualifier in J25cc C action. C.J. Mahon, who finished third in the J25cc B Stock, smashed his toe and broke it in the second moto. Like many others, he would be rac-ing the World Minis in the "injured" category. eN 61en Helen "'cewllY Peril San Bernardino, California Resuhs:April&,2DD3 Loretta Lynn's Qualifier 51 (4-6) STK SHAFT: J.
