ond-place tie with Colorado's Mark Manniko for most ETdE wins. The 1979 World Trials Champion Bernie Schreiber holds the record with eight. Last year's winner, Ryon Bell, of British Columbia, finished second after a disastrous ride in the opening exhibition section that all but put the Gas Gas rider out of contention. Impressive rides on the final two sections moved Bell into the runner-up position. "I am happy to come away with second place," Bell said. "I honestly thought my day was pretty much done," he said of his five in the opening section. "At that point I decided to just ride around and just have fun. Then I got to section two and cleaned it and watched everyone else five it with the exception of Geoff, so I thought maybe there's a chance here. I feel a bit lucky because of my mistake in the first section. It just goes to show - anything can happen at this event." I " " Ol " E ~ ~ . Ijg (; o " '" ~ en S :I: 0.. On a roll after an impressive second-place finish in the National on Saturday was Canadian Wilson Craig. Craig led the competition after the first exhibition section but in the end yielded to Aaron and Bell to finish third. Fourth went to U.S. Montesa's Chris Florin, who turned in some crowd-pleasing rides, but three fives kept the Floridian off of the podium. Sherco-mounted David Chaves overcame a hard fall in section two to claim fifth. EI Trial de Espana is unique in that it is contested in two sessions - a morning session and an afternoon session. During the morning run, the champ-class riders contest one preliminary loop, while the amateur classes complete three full loops. In the afternoon, only the champ class continues on, riding the exhibition sections, which are set in close proximity to the pit area for easy access by the media and the large groups of spectators who traditionally attend this event. This annual fund-raiser donates its net proceeds to support the United States Trial des Nations team efforts, which this year will send a four-man team to Italy to compete in September.
