Tommy Hofmasler (Yam); The Mach 1 Yamaha team of Nick Wey (27) and Heath Voss (behind Wey) had a successful year. Wey finished fourth In the AMA points, while Voss finished second In the World Championship. Wey got fifth in the main, Voss eighth. said. "I was happy, because last week I went five laps and I was wiped out, and this week I made about nine or 10 before I got really tired." Ferry is still in recovery from the dreaded Epstein-Barr virus, but at least he seems to have hjs speed intact. "It's tough though because I want to win so bad that I just blow it in like the first eight minutes riding as fast as I can," Ferry continued. "My speed little bit, and after that I think he got a little tired, and maybe I pulled a little bit away from him. Ricky was in a solid second place, and I couldn't even see Chad, so I just rode my own race after that, and I finished third. I'm pretty happy, and that's about it." That was about it for the podium spots as well, as Reed finished out the race nearly 14 seconds in front was good tonight. I was pumped. I didn't even ride supercross. I rode it for a week and a half before Salt of Carmichael for the win, and Carmichael had nearly a further dozen seconds on teammate Fonseca. Ferry finished another five seconds behind Fonseca. Wey crashed on the ninth lap exiting the whoops and still battled all the way up to challenge Ferry in the final turn for the fourth spot, only to come up a touch short. "You can be satisfied [with second in the championship], but I'm a racer, Lake, and I tested outdoors all week this week, so to come out at least with some speed was encouraging for me." Ferry ran third for quite a while, but Honda's Fonseca began gaining noticeably by about lap seven and was pressuring the Yamaha thumper pilot by lap eight. After the finish line to start the ninth lap, Fonseca jumped aggressively inside Ferry to steal the last podium spot for the sixth week running. "I got off to an okay start behind Larry [Ward] an'd I thjnk Voss, and then Ferry got by me," Fonseca said. "After that, I got by Larry and got by Heath, and Ferry had opened up a little lead on me, and I finally caught him up and finally passed him. It kind of stayed the same for a and I want to win, and there's always thoughts that if I didn't really make dumb choices at the time, maybe I could've had a better shot," Reed said. "I made the mistakes that I made and I leamed from them, and I think that I guess I made my mistakes in the right year [my rookie year]. Hopefully, I got all of that out of the way, and next year will be a new year for me." Keith R. Johnson wrapped up the SX GP Privateer title. He got a new Nlssan Frontier pickup truck and a truckload of cash to go with It. How They Got There ®(]]®OB~[fi)® Chad Reed and Ricky Carmichael both made short work of their respective heat races, with Reed winning heat one by over 17 seconds over Emesto Fonseca, Heath Voss and Josh Demuth, and Carmichael winning the second heat by more than nine seconds over Timmy Ferry, Sean Hamblin and Larry Ward. "The track's awesome here in Vegas," Reed said from the podium. "I'm just happy I got the holeshot. I'm working really hard on my starts, and I'm just trying to put laps together. Uke I said earlier on, I just want to win the race, and whatever happens to the championship happens." "I feel really good tonight," Carmichael followed up. "I need to rise to the occasion and get another good start. You fans are awesome, thanks a lot, and I just need to go out there and do the best I can do and stay out of trouble's way." Semifinal one featured the two riders fighting over the World Championship privateer title out front, Ryan Clark and Keith R. Johnson. Clark made an aggressive pass on Johnson for the lead, and Johnson seemed content to hang back and qualify, but then he picked it up and began catching Clark out front. On the last lap, as Johnson applied pressure, Clark went down in the whoops, and Johnson got the win. To make matters worse, Clark got up sixth and couldn't make a last-comer block-pass stick on Tommy Hofmaster for fifth and had to go to the LCQ. Kyle Lewis, Jason Thomas and James Povolny Jr. also qualified out of the race. Nick Wey dominated the second semi from start to finish, followed by Greg Schnell, who ran second every lap. Joe Oehlhof, Brian Mason and Casey Lytle rounded out the top five. The bad became worse at the start to the LCQ for Clark as he went down in the first tum, eliminating him from the main event and effectively handing the privateer bonus to Johnson. Clark Stiles and Isaiah Johnson ran one-two for the entire race, and both qualified for the main.
